I was reading an article about the decline of AM radio due to the rise of FM and now satellite radio as well as pandora. Apparently also now, all the smartphone usage damages the quality of AM radio. I guess it's cool from a nostalgic purpose and it is still used as an emergency broadcast, particularly in rural areas.

Well the only thing I listen to on the AM band are baseball games. AM can only handle talk because the quality of the broadcasts is so lousy. I think the biggest AM stations (the 50 kilowatt stations in the US) will be around for the foreseeable future but it is likely that smaller stations will start going by the wayside.

On an additional note I can't see how cell phone use would affect AM signals. Cell phones broadcast over the Ultra High Frequency band (typically between 700 and 2500 MHz). AM used the Medium Frequency band (300 KHz to 3 MHz).

Although I don't own an AM radio, I do like talk radio (which makes up a fair amount of AM programming) so I would be sad to see AM die.
