1. Yes rolling for spells doesn't make a lot of sense in some ways. Wouldn't a wizard know what helps and what doesn't and focus/memorize (or whatever they do to prepare) accordingly. I think the argument has been that they don't know what will be helpful and thus prepare something from the lore, but not necessarily what will help in a given situation. Ultimately I think this argument is bogus. After some experience in battle a wizard will know what make sense and what doesn't and leave the ones that don't help at home. The base spells were meant to address some of this, but probably don't go far enough. My impression is that some of the game designers just felt that more random, means more fun. In reality, people typically try to game the system to eliminate or minimize the random factor. So why put it in there to begin with. I don't want part of a successful strategy to be to try to game the system.

The answer may be to allow players to review the opponents chosen spells, and they can refuse if they believe it's too powerful. Then back to random? (#6 on the what sucks rocks list may already ban the too powerful spells)
