| Welcome to Bennington County, where Vermont begins. We get a lot of visitors around here. Unfortunately, most folks don't come for the beautiful scenery, the friendly people or the great local cuisine. For decades now we've had people comin' up here and poking their noses into things that ought to be left in the past where they belong. So you understand if we're a little suspicious of strangers who claim to be just passin' through. Maybe if you stick around a while and introduce yourself, the good people of Bennington'll be a little more likely to open up to you a bit. Introduce yourself and become a part of our community! Just don't go asking nosy questions. If you're already a member please log in to your account to access all of our features: |

Description: A formidable woman, who wasn’t very tall but full of strength and determination, with dark brown hair and eyes that pierced a man’s soul. That was how her grandfather had always described his mother, a woman that he claimed Amanda to be the spitting image of the day she turned 12. And while Amanda, at 5’ 3”, was petite and her dark brown hair framed a face that contained a pair of brown eyes, she could never see those piercing eyes her grandfather described when she looked at her reflection. Little has changed about Amanda since she was a teenager. Her eyes are still prone to focus downward on the path before her feet and she always has a small smile for the residents of Bennington she’s known all her life when she passes them on the streets downtown. She talks with the soft, soothing voice that the residents have come to associate with their librarians. Amanda’s wardrobe has changed far more over the years. She no longer wears the sundresses paired with cardigans that her grandmother loved to buy for her and insisted that she wear. Instead, she now prefers khaki slacks or skirts paired with a sweater or cardigan over a simple tank top. The modest 2” heels she wears is the only evidence left of her grandmother’s sartorial influence. Bio: Just as with Amanda physically, little has changed in her life since she became a teenager. She still lives in the same brick house with her father on Monument Avenue. She still drives to the Bennington Free Library to help with the historical exhibits and to track down requested books that are hard to find. However, she’s no longer just a volunteer, juggling her time between school and the library. Every morning she drives over at 9:45 in order to have the doors open by 10. And she now spends most of her days lost in old books and the historical collections that amass in her office before they are released either for general circulation or to be displayed as part of an exhibit in the Vermont History Room. Some days the library closes at 5, but Amanda always remains till 7. Saturdays during the summer are the only exception. On those days, Amanda leaves just as the library closes at 1 PM and heads over to Madison’s to grab a bite with a couple colleagues before heading home. Another change in Amanda’s life is the long absences she’s come to expect of her father as he travels from one academic conference to the next. He checks in regularly by email, usually asking for her to confirm some fact or other for his presentation. He never tells her when to expect him home and it isn’t until she sees the light in his study when she pulls into their driveway that she knows he’s home again for a few nights, just enough time to have a few dinners with his daughter to debate his latest findings on another esoteric topic of American History.
