POSSIBLE PROLOGUES/BEGINNINGS 1) Nathan awakes in the place where the dead dwell, and meets death. Comes face to face with the lost souls of his children, and remembers what happened to them. He emotionally breaks, and begs to be allowed to stay here and reunited with his children, but he is already being pulled back to the world of the living. He wakes up buried, and has to dig himself out. Fifty years has passed since his death, and his brother who was the one who murdered his children now walks the Earth as the host of the Angel of Destruction. Nathan begins to chase Caleb, and comes to the ruins of the cathedral he died in in the city of Brighton where he once more confronts Caleb. Nathan at first angrily questions Caleb to try and understand why he did what he did, but when Caleb purposely provokes Nathan, he snaps and charges at Caleb. 2) Nathan awakes in a grave, unaware that he is in fact already dead. He has not entered the place where the dead dwell, and the memories of what exactly happened to him and his identity as a whole are rather blurred. He only gradually begins to realize that he is truly dead as he digs himself up, and he does not accept it until he breaks free and sees how the world has changed since he was last conscious. His memories begin to really flood back when he makes it to the ruined cathedral in Brighton, remembering the circumstances of his death and what Caleb did. When Caleb shows himself to Nathan who had so recently remembered how his children had died, Nathan charges forth fully consumed by murderous intent. 3) Nathan awakes in the grave, initially it is as if his very mind is fractured. This is the result of being returned to life after fifty years of being left to rot. He doesn’t understand why he’s here, what happened to him, or even who he is. He sees the pieces and shards of several memories of his life, but the clearest and strongest are the night of the fire that claimed the lives of his children. He can remember watching in horror as the flames wrapped around the house and only seemed to grow further out of control, and then he can remember seeing another man (it’s actually Caleb) watching the fire, laughing insanely. The man’s hands appear to be burned, and he strongly smells of gasoline. For reasons still unknown to him, Nathan feels such an intense rage at that part of the memory, it almost feels as if he’s being consumed by it. Then, it is then he sees the light of day for the first time in fifty years, as the person who had been digging him out the entire time (the stranger, aka, Baphomet) drags him up out of the grave. The stranger stays with Nathan until he recovers a bit and gets his mind in order, while revealing snippets and pieces of Nathan’s situation to him. Nathan goes to Brighton and finds the ruined cathedral, and remembers it all and unexpectedly is met by Caleb there. 4) Rather than starting with Nathan, the story begins with Caleb awaking a few months or so after he and Nathan killed each other, and after Abaddon fell from the sky and destroys the world. He is completely confused, he remembers what happened, and even remembers being prepared and ready to die in this spot. But it appears to him that he survived, while Nathan died. He almost seems disappointed. It’s then when he realizes that things aren’t the way they should be period. The stained glass windows of the cathedral are shattered, and what’s more, is that it now appears to be night outside. All of the lights in the cathedral itself are off. It had felt to Caleb as if only a few moments had passed since he first ended up on the bloodied floor of this cathedral and when he had, it had been day. There was no way it should be night, and even if that much time had passed, somebody should have found him and Nathan’s corpse. But then, he noticed something else. Something about Nathan’s corpse seemed… odd. He hadn’t noticed it right away because of the darkness. On the first look, Nathan’s skin appeared to be a ghostly white, it was as if it had not decomposed at all. On the second look, Nathan looked plenty decomposed and it actually caused even Caleb to feel fear, seeing Nathan in that way. But it was as if the illusion won against reality within Caleb’s mind, for Nathan appeared the way he did the first look the next time he looks at him. Caleb is not entirely sure what has happened, but a part of him cannot allow himself to leave Nathan’s corpse in this place. There were conflicting reasons as to why… partly, he genuinely wanted his brother to receive a burial. The other part of him however wished to bury Nathan and all memory of him as deep as he could, so he would never have to think of him again/see his rotted corpse again. He carries the corpse of his brother outside, and finds the entire city is in decay/ruin. There is no one left. Caleb carries Nathan’s corpse all the way out of the city, and places him on a hill with the intention of burying him in this spot. He leaves to retrieve a shovel, and when he returns, wild dogs are sniffing around Nathan. As Caleb sees one of the dogs bite into Nathan, he flies into a murderous rage and sort of blacks out. When he comes to, he has already killed two of the three dogs, and he has embedded the shovel partway into the neck of the third one. But it is not as if the shovel is an axe, and thus, it is not a clean decapitation, no, the dog is actually still alive and whimpering in pain. It will surely die anyways. For a brief second, Caleb briefly remembers the golden retriever pup he had as a child. He had named him Napoleon, but he had died as a result of Caleb not holding tight enough on Napoleon’s leash, resulting in Napoleon running out into the street getting struck by a car. He remembers clearly the words he spoke to his brother after that incident. “He died because of me. I… killed him.” Caleb remembers very clearly feeling as if he had lost something that day, something he wished he hadn’t. Driving that memory from his mind, Caleb raises the shovel into the air, and brings it down again, putting an end to the poor miserable mongrel’s life. He digs one hole for Nathan, and one for the dog. Looking down at the makeshift graves, Nathan’s in particular, he walks away into the darkness, blood still encrusted on the shovel. Something Caleb is incapable of seeing is watching from afar and following him through the darkness, however. After this, a variation of Nathan digging himself out or the stranger digging Nathan out. 5) Story does not begin with Nathan digging himself out of his grave, but rather, first entering the ruined cathedral. Him digging himself out, him realizing that he's dead, is stuff that's handled after he encounters and tries and kills Caleb a second time after Caleb severely injures him by showing Nathan how much he's changed in these fifty years (he's become an inhuman monster who is basically all but unphased by an axe to the neck). When he regains consciousness, he finds his injuries mysteriously tended to, but his unknown benefactor nowhere to be seen. Edited by Atticus, Apr 5 2016, 09:26 PM.
