Bewilderness FAQ

Setting

1) So where exactly is this set?

Bewilderness is set smack in between the two Faerie Courts, Summer and Winter. This stretch of land is a major Waypoint travel location and has therefore become a hub for trade, vacation, and relaxation. There is a mist that covers the boarders of Bewilderness and only those who know how to use the Waypoints can leave and enter Bewilderness safely. And the Fae, they can enter freely as well. But only Season-Bound Fae can enter their respective lands. Winter cannot enter Summer without penalty, and vice-versa.

2) What year is it?

Time is different in the Nevernever - the land where the Fae, Sidhe, supernatural and anything bump in the night or day originate and live. As it stands though, it has been 50 years since Arikarka stumbled into Bewilderness and helped to see it grow into the prosperous land it is today. So, does 50 A.A. (After Ari) sound good?

3) So what's the technology like? Is there even technology here?

Yes there is technology here in Bewilderness! Just not probably like you would expect. Everything is ran by magick - the little folk and tinkers have really outdone themselves. Bewilderness has an equivalent of cell phones, digital clocks, personal computers, etc, but aren't super common among the ancient races. Most use communication spells as the primary form of communication, and those pre-cast spells can be purchased at the Bazaar.

4) How large this place then anyways?

Fairly large. It would take a good half day to ride the width of Bewilderness from the boarder of Summerlands to the base of the mountains at Winterland. It would then take a full day of hard riding to travel the length stretching from the Dragonback Ridge to Firelight.

The Treetops is equivalent to the living space height of a 6 story skyscraper plus some due to, you know, being trees. So around a total of approximately 4 acres. The Floor expands another acre or so in circumference around the Treetops. Overall the size is open enough for privacy with plenty of public gathering space.

The Bazaar is the size of two acers, with some tents built with a second floor and others with basements. The formation can change daily though, so it's hard to map out.

Other locations, such as Sharpewing Point, Forgotten Tomes, etc, are the size you'd think they would be for their purpose.

As for the geographical areas, the Suntrap Meadow sprawls for a large portion of the Southeasts, the Dragonback Ridge and Tapiek Mountains are HUGE and cannot be climbed without heavy preparation and luck, while the waterfalls and their pond have a 3 mile hike around it.

5) So this is a peaceful place... nothing bad ever happens?

Rumor has it the Winter and Summer Courts aren't too happy with each other. I wonder why. This unrest has lead the natural citizens of Bewilderness to be short, rude, un-trusting, and at times even lashing out towards the newcomers who they derogatorily call "Hedgecrawlers".

These Hedgecrawlers have begun to come into Bewilderness in larger numbers and must learn to set aside their possible differences and cultures to team up and prove to the Citizens they belong here just as much as they.

Characters and Acceptance

1) What should I do when I get here?

Well, read the rules first. Make a character. Jump into the current story outlines that everyone can contribute to and begin having fun!

2) Do I have to wait to get accepted until I can RP?

No! All you need is a character up in the character application section and you are allowed to roleplay in any of the New Player areas as long as you don’t use your powers or abilities until they are given the green light. So go have fun!

3) What kinds of powers can I start out with?

Anything you wish it to be. Just know that super heavy crazy high-leveled powers will not be accepted at this time unless you put up a huge supporting reason for it.

4) Okay. So....Can I give my character a weapon?

Yes. However, they cannot have iron in them. Why iron? Bewilderness is inside the heart of Faerie. Iron is the bane of the Fae and it's death to you if you bring Iron into the lands of the Sidhe.

Also know that there is nothing but the items you have on your back when you enter Bewilderness. All items can be RPed out in the Bazaar, and believe me, all items can be found there. Races from all over the universe venture to Bewilderness to sell their goods. I'm sure you can find something.

5) Uh...okay. So I can have a pet?

Only if they were physically touching you as you entered Bewilderness, if you want your pet to be from where your character originated from. Otherwise I'm sure there is a pet store in the Bazaar *wink wink cough cough*

6) Alright, but what if my character has a liking towards 'adult' things, like drugs or booze? Can I write about that?

Yes. Just be sure to label any sort of topic involving Sex, Drugs, or Alcohol with an [M] in the topic title. M stands for Mature. If you are on the fence with if you should add the 'M' or not, add it. It's always better to be on the safe side.

Powers

1) What kinds of powers can I have?

Type wise? Any kind. Power wise? Any kind. Level wise? Almost any, within reason. There is no 'catch', but you must be able to root for your character in the form of a letter of recommendation, as well as being open to suggestions as to where on the overall scale your character should/could be in relation to most other characters. Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds.

As with anything though, there must be checks and balances. It is expected you will take it into your own hands and keep powers personally interesting by having weaknesses, defects, and shortcomings. God-modding is not allowed by any stretch and you only get one chance to come back from blatant god-modding.

2) So there are really no points, credits, prices, etc for the powers I want?

Nope. It's all honor system and letters of recommendation. However if this system is abused then other measures will need to be taken.

3) What is the 'letter of recommendation' thing then?

This system, for lack of a better term called "Letters of Recommendation" is you way to OOCly vouch for your character's strengths, weaknesses, skills, and faults. It is initially part of your character application and anytime after you submit a letter when applying for a new power, or a level-up to a power.

A letter is your asking staff for approval of a new power. It can be anything, but the more powerful a power is do know that it then needs to be balanced with uses and drawbacks. There will never be any sort of character here at Hedgegroves who has power just for the sake of having a power. Being a site focused on character growth and exploration, power to be a 'top-dog' is not accepted. If this isn't how you like to grow your characters, sorry, but then this site might not be the right fit for you.

Things I, Rain Redbriar, and other future staff members will be looking for in a letter of recommendation will be your personal reasons for why you want your character to have X,Y, and Z powers or skills. The more powerful you want them to be the more reasons you will have to give. Overall I am very flexible, but I do expect a good balance between high power and interesting or unique drawbacks the power has. There is more about the Letters of Recommendation HERE.

Storylines

1) Can I do X in my SL?

When in doubt, feel free to ask a staff member. They can tell you if it's too much. Otherwise it's probably good to go.

2) Can my character be in more than one storyline at a time?

Yes - how you keep track of your personal timeline is up to you. Some players prefer to keep one storyline at a time and others are in 5+. Its recommended you keep a journal/timeline in the Journals forum to help keep things straight, but it's not required.

3) Are all storylines "First Come, First Serve"?

Yes and No. It is all up to the story's author as to who gets in or not. If you feel slighted talk to staff, but it will ultimately be in the author's court. Authors can choose whoever they want to put characters in to their story. If you really want to enter a SL that has filled up, talk to the creator. It's quite possible (not guaranteed in the least) that they will let you in.

One thing that is true is the amount of SLs that a person is allowed to be in will not be limited. However, joining SLs that you can't keep up with will most likely earn you a bad reputation and make it harder for you to join SLs later. But life happens, we understand.

4) Can I start a storyline involving other members, even though I'm new?

You betcha! Advertise your story ideas in the Player Guild Hall to gather attention.

5) Storyline (SL)? Major Storyline (MSL)? Culture/Central Storyline (CSL)?

A Storyline is a basic storyline with a beginning, a middle and a conclusion. It affects your character and other characters, usually a very small number of people. A Major Storyline is a bigger SL that affects a much larger range of people, and can even change the board areas. A Culture/Central Storyline is a world changing, board changing SL that has major changes to the board and how the policies and interactions between characters behave. CSLs change the cannon of Bewilderness.
