Straight from KnC, recommended power supply ratings for their 3 models.

Power Supply Recommendation.

With our shipment date approaching this update addresses the power demands of our mining devices.

We realise we are currently being compared to our competitors with respect to power consumption and would like to clarify our position.

Today we can reveal that our maximal power consumption will be below 1.6 W/GH/s.

We understand the need for some of our more remote customers to be able to secure a purchase of a power supply (PSU) within the given timeframe.

So today we can reveal the following recommendations;

We recommend an 850 Watt PSU with a minimum of 4x PCI-E adaptors for our Jupiter model.

We recommend a 600 Watt PSU with a minimum of 2x PCI-E adaptors for our Saturn model.

We recommend a 400 Watt PSU with a minimum of a PCI-E adaptor for our Mercury model.

This recommended power wattage figure is calculated upon our max. power consumption of total device including all of its components.

We aim to ensure you use a power supply unit capable of outputting in excess of the current recommended wattage to prevent any problems caused due to insufficient power.

Note: Powers supplies must contain a sufficient number of PCI-E adaptors for each respective unit.

Thanks

KnCMiner Team

Looks like they will use even less power on average than originally anticipated, however the smaller Mercury may use a little more. I have planned to get an 850 watt power supply anyway. The model I'm using now in my feathercoin worker is extremely power efficient, and it's easy to work with, fully modular design, I like it. Also the PSU will run cooler if it's only drawing 50% of it's capacity.

On this topic...there are some warnings against the Corsair HX850 in that it could throw a surge, after abnormal reset and restart, and blow a capacitor on the miner. Some folks are using them without issue, which is comforting, since I bought four of them already (silent doh!) so I'll have to be careful.

Also, the ATX needs a jumper to start up when it's not plugged into a motherboard. You may already have one.

I bought this one for a 20-pin ATX. There are others for 24-pin:

Good call. I'll pick one of those up. I like the dummy load instead of a straight jumper. Keeps surges away.

KNC has said "one large customer had an issue with Corsair HX850's" and so they recommended the following:

If you find the miner off for some reason, disconnect all power cables, restart the power supply, power down again, reconnect cables and power up normally.

I think the miners might be spiking in power draw and shutting down the power supply. This puts it in a state that causes it to spike on restart. Disconnecting everything prevents this.
