Name: Hroth Race: Nord Age: 35 Gender: Male Sign: The Lord Faction: Imperial Legion Rank: Knight of the Imperial Dragon Appearance: ![]() Hroth is man of tall stature and broad shoulders. He towers at 6'5" and weights in at 232 lbs. Many who see him would agree he is build like a gladiator. The years have taken a tole on his face and he is starting to look older than even his actual age. He has a grizzled look to him, almost always with a five-o'clock shadow. Hroth - Vladimir Kurich (13th Warrior) Armor/Clothing: He wears an complete set of Steel Plate Armor while working for the empire, along carries a Round Steel Shield (which unlike the picture has been modified with the Empire's Crest on the front) ![]() ![]()
He has also used a Imperial Tower Shield from time to time in battle, but he prefers the Round Steel Shield to it. ![]() When not in armor he wears a plain tunic and pants, with simple boots and a leather gloves. He only wears finer clothes when he required to attend special events. His only peice of jewelry is a silver emerald necklace given to him from his father, Krull. Weapons: He has accumulated quite a few weapons in his life up to this point.
Possessions: His rank affords him some luxury, even despite his posting.
Personality: Even though he serves in the Imperial Legion, he is a Nord through and through. He enjoys fighting, drinking and adventure. His rank forces him to do less of all these things, but he feels that it is a price to serve the Empire, and more importantly, it's people. He is a stanch believer in the Empire, especially what it can be, not always what it is. While he believes in the right of rule by the Emperor, and is a complete supporter of Uriel Septim the VII, he is not blind to the problems of the Empire. Bio: The boy that would grow to be a thoroughly typical Nord was not actually born in Skyrim, but instead in Bruma, the northern most town in Cyrodiil. His father Krull was a member of the Imperial Legion and was stationed in Bruma shortly after he wed Hroth's mother, Hilda. As a member of the legion garrisoned at Bruma, he could not leave and take his wife north so that baby could be born on Skyrim soil. They decided to name the baby Hroth, after Krull's late grandfather. Hroth was a typical child of man, he learned to craw, the walk, then talk. Around that time his father began to instill in him the work ethic of his family. His father would always say, "I may not be the fastest, strongest, or smartest out there, but I'll be damned to Oblivion if I will ever let anyone out work me." This was a feeling that young Hroth took to heart, seeing his father work harder and longer then most of the guards and even other soldiers. After a few years Hroth learned to fight, and that was a discovery of the best kind for the rambunctious young nord. The boy would often rough house with other children in Bruma, sometime's leading to full on fights. He wasn't what you'd call a problem child, in fact for a nord it seemed perfectly healthy for him, finding his place in the world at the bottom of a dog pile, fighting to get back on top. His circle of friends were an ornery bunch, often finding themselves racing and fighting to see who would come out the winner, a constant battle to be the best, one which Hroth applied his father's work ethic to never give up and never back down. When he was around age five he began his schooling in Bruma, finding that he wasn't the best student, neither was he the worst. He was intelligent enough to get by and coupled with a intense work ethic, he quickly found his stride in the academic world. His group of friends would even turn their marks into a contest for the first year of schooling, something that would quickly pass as they lost interest in who was the best student. It wasn't that they didn't succeed in school, it was just that most didn't see the need to worry about something like grades when they all wanted to be adventurers. Perhaps it was a nord trait in the young boys. Hroth kept up his grades and made his parents proud, and that was all he cared in his schooling. After the first few years he had learned to read and write well enough to work, and that's what he did, helping his mother work the fields and tend the families market stall, or help his father with his duties like care for his sword and axe. Around Hroth's eight birthday, his father was sent to Skyrim along with his unit. His father moved around with the legion, but Hilda and Hroth stayed in the city of Windhelm. This was Hroth's first experience with Skyrim, and while he had to leave his friends behind, he found himself feeling like he was home for the first time ever in his life. They lived with Hilda's parents, they both worked on a near by farm outside of Windhelm and quickly found a rhythm to life. Hroth found new friends and all was well as they ran around the city in search of new and interesting fun. As Hroth made it into his early teen years, around fourteen, he made another discovery that would forever shape his destiny; he learned to drink. He wasn't exactly sure when he started drinking, but it was far to late in his eyes, having to make up lost time. He would often joke in later life that his first steps where right into a tavern. He would spend his nights with his friends and family in the taverns laughing, joking, and drinking as most nords do. When his father would be near by, Hroth would travel with them, helping in any way he could (Which usually took the form of helping finish all the mead). He even began training with his father in these days with a blade, a short sword at first but in time he would pick up the long sword. This was his first real hint of military life, and Hroth decided right away that this would be the life for him. As soon as he turned sixteen, he joined the legion, seeing it as the best chance to serve his people. He was quickly sent to Solitude for training with under his father's command, Krull now a Captain in the legion. He was one of the youngest in his unit, but was far from the smallest, having began one of his growth spurts at the on set of sixteen. He grew from five feet six inches to six foot in under a year, and from six foot to six foot five in the next. He was slightly skinny at first, but would grow into his form as his training continued. He trained as a warrior, favoring a long blade. He would eventually choose heavy armor as he a strong person and could heft the weight of the armor and still be mobile enough to be a part of formation maneuvers. His first posting with his unit was in Solitude, so for the first few years of his service, he stayed in basically the same place, often doing field maneuvers and local guard work to keep their fighting edge up. Hroth trained in many different styles of combat, most majoring on infantry formations and maneuvers, but he also was trained as a cavalryman. He would get a horse assigned to him through the quarter master. At first he didn't take to the equine, preferring to use his own two legs. It was also during these early times that his work ethic and commitment was rewarded with a promotion to sergeant among the men. The men would look to Hroth to see what they should be doing and his commanding officers took notice. He would be given more responsibilities, but this only reaffirmed his understanding that hard work equaled a better quality of work, the kind that he could be proud of. When the day came for him to receive his promotion, he was called forward and he stood before his fellow soldiers as his father gave him his insignia papers. It was a great accomplishment for the young legionnaire. It was after his eighteenth birthday that his unit would finally be called into action. A small riot had broken out in Markarth that had escalated to a full rebellion. Hroth's unit was dispatched to quell the rebellion before it got too far out of hand. When they arrived the gates were still opened to them, so they proceeded in, but once they did, they met a stanch resistance from the rebels. They had control of the streets and were trying to capture the hold. They attempted to peacefully deter the citizens, but the rioters began to grow bold, throwing rocks and sticks at the legion soldiers. When it would seem that they would have to resort to force, Hroth remembered the map of the city, knowing that the mines were on the west side of the city, which the rioters were avoiding. He went to his father told him and together they formulated a plan where a single unit of legionaries would go through the mines and come out near the main hold then move in on the rioters from the other side. With legionaries on both encircling them, they would have no choice but to surrender. Krull relayed it to the commander of the legion at Markarth, who decided to go through with the plan, allowing Krull's unit to lead the charge through the mines, since it was his unit that had come up with the idea. Krull and Hroth both lead the soldiers through the mines and they successfully encircled the mob, which began to disperse as they saw that any further action would result in bloodshed. When the Commander heard that it was both Krull and Hroth that came up with and executed the plan, he saw it expedient to promote them both. Krull to general and Hroth to lieutenant. For a time they stayed in Markarth to maintain order and discourage another riot. Once the extra legionaries were removed from Markarth, Krull's unit, along with the other three he was now in charge of, were sent to Whiterun hold. These would be among the last orders that they would receive from the Emperor himself as this was the beginning of the Imperial Simulacrum. As the Emperor was impersonated by the impostor Jagar Tharn, the men of Krulls company continued to protect the people of the hold and surrounding villages. They spent eight years in Whiterun, guarding the town from threats both internal: civil unrest, and external: bandit raids and small boarder disputes, both of which seemed to abound during this time. Two years after being stationed in Whiterun, Hroth would get his first taste of real armed conflict, as he and his unit would be faced against an invading army of Orcs that were searching to escape the political squabbles of feudal High Rock, tried to take control of the Reach. At first they were instructed to leave, then when they wouldn't, talk spread of letting them live there, as long as they abide the rules of the land. Things seemed to be settled, as the Emperor seemed to care little about the problem, but when it was found that the Orcs had been stirring up trouble between the local nords and the reachmen (brenton-like folk that live in the Reach, some of which wish to reclaim it from the nords) who had a fragile truce at the time, it was time that something must be done. The Orcs, wanting land of there own, saw the reachmen as a way to cause trouble and destabilize the local area's militia, allowing them to take lands for themselves. Krull, along with many of his lieutenants and captains decided to make a stand and marched for the reach, leaving the local guard and a small garrison of troops there to protect Whiterun. When Krull's units arrived, they were to make contact with a second legion coming from Solitude so that they could overwhelm the orcs and force them out. Hroth was one of the men tasked with leading the infantry into battle. When the arrived in the Reach, they found the coalition of orcs and reachmen in Karthwasten ransacking the mining village for food and supplies. The legion, under Krull's command, sent in infantry to engage the orcish forces. The first attack was from the reachmen, as the imperial forces formed there lines, the lightly armored and undisciplined reachmen rushed to attack the imperials. Hroth's unit was on the front lines as the imperial archers fired volleys at the charging forces. Many reachmen fell before they reached the imperial lines and the ones that didn't run met the shields, swords and spears of the imperial legionaries, many more reachmen fell at the hands of the Hroth's men. It wasn't long before the reachmen were in full retreat. The orcs however, where much more disciplined and waited to charge, forming there lines up before setting digging in just outside of the village. There were a few tense minutes as the general of the orcs rode out to meet with Krull. They talked for a few minutes before riding back to their respective forces and preparing for the battle. Krull rode over to Hroth's guard and told him that he and his contemporaries would be leading the charge. Hroth was ready and as the command was given to advance. The imperial troops stepped toward the orcs. The orc bows weren't the same quality of the orc smiths in Orsinium, and their arrow range wasn't quiet as far as the legionaries, who fired as they closed in on the orcs. The orcs had heavy armor, unlike their reachmen counter parts, so they did not take the kind of damage that they reachmen did. As the orcs fired back, the legionaries now within range, the imperial forces continued there slow advance, using there shields to block the arrows so to take minimum causalities. When they finally were a hundred yards, the legion picked up it's pace in it's move forward. Their shields and spears clashed as they finally met the orc lines. Hroth was one of the first to reach the front lines of the fight. Within an hour the Empire's forces had over run the orcs and had turned there lines, forcing them to retreat. Using cavalry, the legionaries inflicted heavy losses on the orcs as they ran, and even some reachmen that had turned to rejoin the battle. Just as victory was assured, the forces were called back. The legion had sent word that they had made contact a messenger from the town of Rorikstead and that another orc force was in route from the south. The legionaries pulled back and linked up to the other legion, forming up into camps and preparing for another the next wave that was only a days ride away. The force of orcs arrived the next morning and they attacked as the legion, thinking that they had split their forces to follow the other orcs into the Druadach Mountains, when in fact the legion had sent a force to Rorikstead come around behind them. When the orcs realized what had happened it was too late and cavalry preformed a pincer maneuver, the infantry drawing them in as the cavalry attacked from both flanks. As they ran, they met the second force from Roirkstead and where quickly beaten and captured. Hroth would spend the next two weeks searching for the last of the reachmen and orcs resistance entrenched in the Druadach mountains. Legions were forced to hold position for three days for word from the Emperor himself to pursue them into the mountains, but when the response was to return to Whiterun, they disobeyed. They proceeded to capture almost all of the orcs and reachmen in the mountains. When they returned to Whiterun, they were heralded as hero among the nords who had stopped the an invading army. This move would not be without recourse, they all knew, but as the days pasted in to weeks, and weeks into months, there came no punishment from the Emperor. While many of the ranking officers thought it odd, they decided best not disturb the peace that they secured, if only for awhile. The months became years as they stayed stationed in Whiterun, a rather large bandit problem began to grow in the area. There were near constant raids on the traders that traveled from Whiterun to the other holds and territories. By this time, Krull was a knight protector by this point and his duties pertained to administration and large troop movements, as the high command seemed to have ceased all operations. He became something of a military head for the Whiterun area, working closely with the Jarl and his court to maintain peace. So Krull tasked his son with finding the base of these bandits. Hroth, who was now a captain, worked tirelessly to find the bandits base and after a month had narrowed it down to two locations: Dust Cave and Whitewave Rock. What he needed was to draw them out, so he formulated a plan; he would "accidentally" send let it be known that they were short on man power for the next shipment of spices to Riften. Then, took two units of cavalry, one, which was a small unit of his best men would follow the shipment from afar, the other, would go north of Whiterun. Finally, he would send a unit of cavalry to Riften to escort his father to Riften the week of the shipment. When the time to send the shipment came, Hroth took a unit of cavalry to the north to do maneuvers. When the shipment went east, the bandits took the bait and attacked the caravan, but what the didn't expect was Krull coming back to Whiterun along the same road, and when the bandits were attacked the retreated only to find the west cut off by the smaller unit of cavalry, they were so turned about that Krull attacked again from the south, pushing them north. The north however, is where Hroth's troops were and the imperial forces surrounded the bandits. They slaughtered the bandits and then followed the survivors back to their launching point, which they then cleared out with infantry. The raid was so successful that Hroth received a hero's feast and an unofficial promotion to the senior captain. It was during these eight years in Whiterun that Hroth was given a horse as a reward for his work as a cavalry commander, a beautiful black colt. At first he was hesitant to accept the wild colt, he quickly formed a bond with the horse through it's training. In time he would grow to depend on the horse for his work as a general. He would often ride the horse out on the planes of Whiterun when he had free time, looking for any excuse to ride. He would eventually name the horse over time, simply calling it Hross, which is nordic for horse, something rather uninspired, but nonetheless it seemed to fit the stallion nicely. In Hroth's twenty fifth year, Krull began to step down as general of the Whiterun legions, feeling that it was time to retire, he would spend much of his time in Windhelm with his wife's family. He was growing old after all. He could not formally step down though as the Empire continued to ignore his requests for a replacement, or even the ability to promote one of his own to the official title of leader of the Whiterun legion. The only one that he could rightfully hand the reins to was his second in command, Olaf. Olaf was, however, not an option after the sixth year in Whiterun, left the service to fight for the nord's against Hammerfall. So instead Krull began to train his successor, and the only clear choice was his own son, Hroth. Hroth began to learn to deal with political squabbles and unruly citizenry in addition to military training and strategy. His father was hard on him, but Hroth knew the price of mistakes: lives. He worked hard and learned much from his father, he became a more jovial and charismatic person. He was still as warrior at heart, but he learned how to speak in the tongues of diplomats, how to defuse situations and most importantly, to lead by example to those who he wished to follow. It was after eight years in Whiterun that he began to be called by the title of Knight (unofficially of course) and became the main commander of the Whiterun area. His father continued to advise him as transition continued. Hroth maded quick progress with the men, most knowing him for his deeds in what was know known as the First Orcish Incursion. It was the first of of two that would happen during the Imperial Simulacrum, and only one of the many Battles between Skyrim and it's western neighbors. Hroth did his best to keep the unit as a whole during these trying times. Many of his brethren rallied to the flag of Skyrim to fight for new territory and with the imperial forces so weakened by the seemingly uninterested Emperor, and stretched far to thin too enforce the peace between the many providence of the empire. His time in Whiterun didn't last however, as there was strife throughout the empire and with there seemingly unconcerned leader, the situation in Skyrim grew worse. War had been raging between High Rock and Solitude, who's legion garrison had been called back to the Imperial City shortly after the First Orcish Incursion, while Hammerfell seemed to be waiting for it's moment to strike. This moment came just after Hroth was made commander of the legion in Whiterun. The Redguards of Hammerfell saw there chance as the summer weather allowed for travel over the mountains, the nord armies of Falkreath and Markarth attacked Hammerfell, attempting to gain new lands. They were defeated however and when they retreated to Falkreath, the reguards saw a chance to attack into Skyrim with momentum. They struck quickly in Falkreath, taking the town first, then began sweeping up down across the south. Hroth could not sit by and allow them to wreak havoc in the south of Whiterun, so he marched his legion down toward the small town of Oakenwood. This would be his first battle commanding the legion. When the legion arrived at Oakenwood, they began to forify the town. When the redguards arrived the Legion prepared to defend the town. As Hroth's forces formed their lines, he sent units of infantry and cavalry into the mountains on either side of oakenwood before the redguard forces arrived. When the redguards attempted to send men up the moutains to try and flank the legions, they met more of Hroth's men holding the high ground. As they attempted to attack up the mountain, the redguards were decimated by Hroth's archers, and as they retreated, the left the flanks wide open and Hroth personally led the cavalry charge that surged up the middle of the redguards. With Legionaries on three sides, the redguards were forced into a retreat. The Legionaries followed the redguards, who found themselves cut off from returning to Hammerfell with a sudden blizzard on the mountain. The Hammerfell units were decimated and after that attack, Hammerfell did not launch another attack, for fear of losing even more troops. Shortly after this victory, the Champion of Tamriel restored the emperor to the throne and with it, the peace to the empire. There was no doubt that word would soon be sent to Whiterun to legitimize Hroth's command, but instead the word was that Hroth was to be summoned to the Imperial City. When Hroth arrived he, he was given a royal welcome and met by the emperor himself. He was also invited to the White and Gold tower to meet with the emperor. After a feast in the tower, he met with the emperor in his study, Hroth didn't know what to say at first, but the emperor was personable with him and he eventually relaxed and they discussed many things about the situation in Skyrim and even the other providences. After two hours of discussion about the various deeds Hroth had done, and the state of Skyrim, the emperor asked him what he knew about the providence of Black Marsh. While he knew a little about it, he was no expert, but then the emperor revealed his reasons for asking him to come. He was planning on increasing the Imperial presence there, and he would like Hroth to oversee it. Hroth was flattered to be sure, but at the same time, a little apprehensive, telling the emperor that there must be more qualified candidates, but the emperor maintained his stance. So he accepted the position and the official promotion to Knight. He received two gifts from this promotion, two silver swords, one long, and the other short. He then set out for Black Marsh. When he first arrived at Black Marsh, he found it to be startlingly different from Skyrim. Instead of cold winters and snow, he found hot, sweltering summers and swampland. He saw this as only a challenge that he would have to overcome, which in time he did. He spent the next year overseeing the building of the fort in Sagra Bay and it's staffing as it was garrisoned. He found the administrative work to be much the same as in Skyrim, only that it was with different people, people that weren't as quick to trust him or accept his kind. He worked hard to shape up the poor soldiers under his care and quickly found his stride in this strange new land. Now at 35, he works diligently to keep the direction of the military presence in Black Marsh moving foward, while trying to gain the trust of it's citizens.
