I met the author many moons ago in middle school and actually had a signed copy of her Rhythm & Dues book of poetry. This poem was used in When Hell Freezes Over I'll Skate but was not printed online. I just got my book today and I one fingered typed this on my tablet.

Benign Neglect - Lindamichellebaron

I'm not ready to die of benign neglect
though that's what's happening.
Living off of "when you did"
and "what you use to."

Maybe the loveboat
is just too steady.
Maybe the sweetcake
is over ready.
Maybe the hot chocolate
has cooled instead.
Maybe the "need you" battery
is running dead.
Whatever it is,
I'm really not ready to die of
benign neglect...
So,
I'll rock the boat-
cut the cake-
heat the chocolate-
recharge the battery-
or whatever it will take
to put some more life in our love...
some more move to our groove...
'cause I'm really too young to be killed by
passivity.
So,
I'll harass and provoke,
needle or poke
you into making this a past tense
of what it is
or a present tense
of what it was.
'Cause the worse-est thing I've ever felt
is this soft
slow
death
by benign neglect.
