It was the day before Christmas and all through the Academy everyone was running around as normal, attending classes and what not. No sign of holiday cheer to be found, the thought of gifts or not being a douchebag to others long gone from this godforsaken place. Why in the blue hells was what was supposed to be heaven such a sucky feudal era crapsack world still puzzled her, even with the many years she spent in Rukongai trying to get an answer. Did the shinigami hate the future? Did indoor plumbing and decent technology scare them? Well no matter; that was something to fix when she became captain commander and could order change. For now she would work with what she had and that was making sure that this place at least had some semblance of fun. Pranking wars with like minded souls was well and good but the teachers were starting to bitch – which she didn’t mind, no classes every now and again? Free day off? Hells yeah, she was an underground hero with the rest of her compatriots now amongst non-boring Academy students. Well she had a more fun and pleasant idea in mind for all to enjoy – even the moronic oppressors of joy who very well shouldn’t but she wouldn’t be a hypocrite and deny them holiday cheer for all that they didn’t deserve the love. Killing them with kindness worked pretty well too anyway. But first, she needed her helpers and to that end, she had scattered posters about the school, calling for said assistance while she busied herself making arrangements for some presents. She could deal with her end but she knew that she could never get distribution done alone; she’d need at least one other and the more the better here honestly. So it was that she hung out on the rooftop of the cafeteria where she noted for all to meet. If they couldn’t get up here, they would be useless anyway. |

Dante sat under one of the many trees in the court yard, reminiscing of his living moments when this time of the year would come across him. Of course it meant nothing to him really, not like he was some Scrooge or a Grinch, it was more like his background and surroundings never took part in the kinds of things that usually happened during this time. It wasn't to say that he didn't know about this holiday cheer, he just never experienced it first hand and by the look of this Academy, it didn't look like he was going to experience it even in death. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it in his mouth, sucking in the sweet nicotine he had craved when he was alive. It was funny, people said that this little white stick would be the death of him when he was alive, he chuckled at the thought and continued to watch the students scurry along. They looked to be in a hurry, Oh to be young he thought as he watched him from under the tree. Some of them were probably older than he was in terms of years, but in their physical appearance, they seemed to be average kids ranging in the age of 15 to probably 23 by the looks of some kids. This in fact added to his uneasiness when he was asked to join the Academy, going back to school at his age didn't seem right. It sort of felt embarrassing. But it was explained that age did not matter, it still didn't stop his uneasiness thought but he decided to give it a shot. In terms of age, he was absolutely not the oldest, it was actually refreshing. Yet, with all the years and time these students had, you would think they had enough time to take part in some holiday festivities. Dante always wanted to, no matter if he was raised to be a stone cold killer by a military, he still would have enjoyed some form of a regular childhood activity. He would have to settle for enjoying time away from the front lines it seemed, to dream huh.... |

The original idea was to wait around for anyone she happened to miss when she first came up with her plan but a couple of hours later reminded her of how boring waiting around tended to be. This was really all kinds of tedious and she was hoping that some of those in the academy that she didn’t know yet happened to be interesting enough to be willing to tag along with her own schemes. Thinking about it, she knew by now that most of the spirits here were far older than they appeared to be, a good deal of them being well into their hundreds. It was still a bit unnerving to meet people that appeared to be the same age as she was, only to find out later on that they were in reality alive back at the turn of the millennia. On the other hand, she also learned that even souls like they were still aged, albeit at a far slower rate. Just what happened when they died again? Huh. Well mulling on that would get her nowhere and she needed to stretch her legs a bit anyway after a long day of – wait no, she had no classes today, the teachers were on strike because they were too busy being children and throwing a tantrum. She had nothing better to do than wander about the courtyard until tonight anyway, so with that thought she hopped to her feet, the wooden roof creaking as she moved. Yet another sign that this place needed to get with the times, who made a cafeteria out of flammable material? Mirage walked to the edge of the building and made the short hop over to a tree branch that creaked far less than that roof. That wasn’t a good sign when the tree felt more stable than the building, even with the smell of something burning. Looking down beneath all the branches and leaves some middle-aged looking person was lazing below the tree, puffing away at a cigarette. Hmm, he didn’t look like he was stuck in the dark ages and not being busy with class put him as a good enough helper. Now it was just to get him to accept his new role. She hopped off the branch, sliding down the tree trunk and landing in front of the tree (and this was more reason why she wore her own outfit instead of that uniform; pulling that off in sandals and frilly hakama?) Not one to mince words, she went right to the point. “Hey there mister, have you ever been a secret santa?” |

Dante blew out a puff of smoke as he took the cigarette from his mouth and held it firmly in his right hand. This odd girl came out of nowhere and started babbling about a thought he was just having. It couldn't be a coincidence that she had just talked about something he was thinking about, no of course not. She either had to be a mind reader or just really lucky in these kind of situations. At any rate, Dante was sort of confused as to what possessed the girl into coming to talk directly to Dante instead of the other students. In the time he had been here, only a few students ever talked to him and they somehow mistaken him for one of the teachers. Like the girl, he didn't wear his uniform, well not traditionally anyway. This girl seemed to not follow the dress code as well, it might be what possessed her to come talk to him in the first place, the shared enthusiastic behavior for disobeying the rules. Being a military man, this was completely out of character for him but it was the only type of clothes he felt comfortable in and the professors had all allowed it anyway so it was fine. But back to the woman at hand. Her questions couldn't have been more on the ball with what he was thinking but he couldn't answer with a yes. "No, sorry." he stated as he took the cigarette and placed it back in his mouth and began to suck on the nicotine once again. Dante had wished the answer could have been a yes but his time in the military base didn't allow that. As he pulled the white stick out of his mouth, he began to speak again as smoke seeped from his nostrils and his mouth at the same time. "Its funny you should mention that though. I was just thinking of the time of the year and what usually happens in the world of the living during this time. I wish I could have taken part in it while I was alive but sadly that wasn't the case. But anyway, why do you ask?" |

Mirage didn’t expect to run into someone so perfect for her cause. She did have hopes once she saw that he was both ignoring the uniform codes and smoking modern cigarettes (though honestly the smoke would not work well for moving without notice but that was a concern for later on) and wasn’t at all deterred by his apparent surprise – most people would be somewhat shocked if a random girl jumped down a tree in front of them. To the main point though, she was working on means to convince the guy to work for her for a night in case he had heard of her recruitment drive but his lack of knowledge was clear enough and his comments on not only missing out on that in life, but actually being aware of the time of the year, what she even meant and did it sound like he wanted that opportunity? She had to work to keep her smile in check but this was just far too perfect and convenient. She wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth though. “I’m sure that you’ve noticed the lack of festivities here. So a few of us got together and planned to play Santa and spread some cheer tonight. We’re short a person though and since you never got the experience, how about making a few Academy students happy tonight?” |

Dante took another Puff from his cigarette and blew out the smoke, at the same time he was thinking about the girl's offer. Of course it would be interesting to see how this holiday was celebrated since he didn't have the opportunity to celebrate it while he was alive. But at the same time, he was actually enjoying this day of peace and quite before he had to return to his classes tomorrow. How often do these opportunities present themselves anyway? By that he meant both of them, a day off in this Academy was really rare but a chance to actually take part in something he had never done in the 138 years he had known about it. Decisions, decisions. Dante's orange eyes glanced at the girl once more, of course she couldn't see his eyes because of his black shades but he could see her fine. In fact most people mistook the shades for him being blind, it was a good thing he had going. His Kido and sparing practices were where people really were impressed by his "blindness" as he was almost always 100% accurate when it came to shooting the target and when it came to just normal sparring. They would never know that he could see this whole time but then again it was their fault for just assuming his shades were there because he was blind. As he looked at the girl, he took another puff of the cigarette and sucked in the nicotine to the filter before flicking the bud away. "What would I have to do? he asked as smoke flew out of his mouth and he began to stand up. It was an obvious question for someone like him to ask since he had never participated in this before so she should have been expecting this. It seemed he had chosen the rode never taken instead of lazying around the court yard for the rest of the day. But this was probably a one time opportunity. |

He was taking some time to give an answer, reasonable given the circumstances; most people wouldn’t just readily agree to someone just like that without some thought put into it. Still, she did need the other person to help her out if she intended to cover the entire academy in one night. They could just do it across a couple of night but then that would kill the surprise a bit not to mention the problem of ticking off the teachers enough to get them to strike again to get the day to prepare….it just wasn’t worth the effort. After a few more puffs from that cigarette he had finally come to some kind of decision; to get more information. He wasn’t rejecting it outright though so she could work with this. “You know how a Secret Santa in the living world is a whole affair about people being given someone to buy a gift for in secret and on the day in question they give it to them?” Well she didn’t know whether or not he really knew but it wasn’t all that important given that she was going to explain herself. “Well we’re going to do something along those lines for the entire Academy in a more literal sense. You’d just need to be good at moving about at night. Of course the whole point of being Santa is not letting people know so you have to be a bit sneaky too.” He’d also have to be sneaky to avoid the patrols and waking up any students while they were breaking into their rooms but he could figure that one out himself. |
