Shinigami Guidebook Your guide and need to knows about Shinigami and how to become one. ![]() What are Shinigami? The word Shinigami translates to "death god" or "death spirit". The Shinigami are sometimes referred to as 'death gods' or Soul Reapers. They are a race of Spiritual beings that act as enforcers and psychopomps, or deities, who all share similar supernatural powers. Their body is made up of Reishi (Spirit Particles) instead of atoms. This means that just like most other types of spirits, they can only be seen by other spiritually aware entities, which excludes most Humans. It is the soul reapers job to send spirits to the Soul Society also known as the afterlife, and it is because of this job that they possess supernatural abilities. Using their powers that come in the shape of a Zanpakuto, they perform soul burials on Pluses(souls) and fight the beings known as Hollows. Their Zanpakutos act as their main weapons however they can also use Kidō, or spells that they have been taught or have learned. Those that harness their power and become talented maybe become affiliated with various organizations like the Thirteen Court Guard Companies and the Stealth Force. The others are spread out among the Gotei 13 which are the primary military branch of the Soul Society. Among their abilities they have the ability or Longevity to out last the normal age that you would see in human beings, but while they can age and die of natural causes or as a result of physical injury just like humans it is not uncommon for one to live for thousands of years and not age all that much. They have Enhanced Endurance, which allows them to take considerably greater injuries than the normal human being would so that they can outlast their enemies even if they take hits, though they can die and be injured like normal human beings. They also have Reiyoku which is the natural spiritual energy that Shinigami give off. Reiyoku varies greatly in magnitude with the strength of each Shinigami. They also do not have to eat anything to sustain themselves, though they engage in the act none the less as Shinigami and other spiritual beings only become hungry when they have used too much Spiritual Energy within a short amount of time. As stated before they also have Kido or spells at their disposal as well as their Zanpakuto which is their main power to defeat Hollows and perform soul burials. A shinigami's Zanpaktou is usually his primary weapon, although there are always exceptions. A Zanpaktou is considered to be of medium strength in it's unreleased form. While Shikai, or Bankai are active, a Zanpaktou has a strong strength, apart from any other tags due to abilities, or masteries. Shinigami appear to be human, however, there are a few Shinigami who are less Human-like in appearance. It seems that between Shinigami there are much greater variations in body-sizes than between Humans, as there are real giant-like entities which are common among the Gate Keepers of the Seireitei, and ones with extremely small stature among them. This difference in size and characteristics can also be seen in normal members of Soul Society. Asides from that they are not much different than human beings though most Gotei 13 personnel wear the standard Shinigami uniform, called Shihakushō (死覇装, Garment of Dead Souls) - a white shitagi, a black kosode, a black hakama, a white hakama-himo, white tabi, and waraji. The black kosode also has its owner's division insignia emblazoned on the inside, though it does not appear to have any significant reasoning other than minor security authorization. Lieutenants sometimes also wear an armband which carries their division symbol and its number, usually on their left arm. Gotei 13 officers, particularly captains and lieutenants, often customize their personal appearance or that of their uniform. The Past The Soul Society is only 2000 years old(Around the roman empire). During those first 1000 years the shape and outlook of the society changed. The first 200 years the Soul King used people from different Runkongai districts to do his Dirty work. But as the years went on an academy was formed to militarize the members to make them more organized. While this was going on, the Seireitei was formed into houses which would supervise all of what would go on in the soul society. After all this progress, the Seireitei started to develop laws that would help govern everything that was going on. One of those was Central 46, which would allow the society to function with out having to directly take orders from the soul king. During this time Noble houses were formed, the top 4 hold the most respect among all of soul society and being taken into one is a great achievement. As well, the lower Noble houses serve the upper ones. Their have only been 2 captain commanders so far the first one having ruled for well over 1,985 years, during his period he set up all of what is in the soul society today. The laws and punishments that regulate what is allowed and not allowed by a member of the seireitei.. The Following are the laws he set in place. Shinigami have existed for as long as one can recount, going by the name of Balancers. During their time as Balancers, they were unrefined, uncivilized, and uncoordinated. They existed, therefore they went to work. Guiding souls to the afterlife and purifying souls that descended to a Hollow state. Once humanity came into existence, souls which had been gathering in Soul Society were able to transmigrate to the material realm. As humans were able to flow between them material realm and the spiritual realm, the work of the balancers increased. For now, these humans could descend into a negative state, becoming Hollows. As Hollows, they were primal beasts and the Balancers did not spare them pity as they slayed them. However, where there is good, there is always evil. Evil humans would die, giving birth to intelligent and cruel Hollows. As Hollows they would terrorize the human realm and it was clear that the Balancers needed organization. The Spirit King would be the one to gather Balancers together, establishing Soul Society in civil terms, just as humans were doing in the material world. He had to traverse Rukongai in order to gather the strongest Balancers, forming the first squad. These cold hearted killers would go on to become the first division after slaying many an evil Hollow. They would then establish the Shino Academy, in order to train more balancers. It would take 1000 years before things were all put into motion, uniting balancers as a society. This society was backed by four founding members, whom decided to build their own legacies: Izanagi, Tsukiyomi, Amaterasu, Sunsao'o. Izanagi was the family of the first Captain Commander, who at that time was the strongest Balancer that Soul Society ever birthed. He would rain as head of his house and leader of the Gotei 13 for 1,985 years. Working together with the other noble families from the four strongest Balancers, they would bring into place a form of government, known as Central 46. They would take advisers whom while not as strong as them, graduated the academy with impressive results. These advisers would thus form smaller noble families and business within Soul Society at large. They were wise men and women whom had guided the warriors in Soul Society, birthing the name "Shinigami". Unfortunately the origin of the name Shinigami also came as a result of evil humans. After the existence of the first Fullbringer, more humans were becoming mediums due to his teachings. This would give rise to one such group of beings known as "Quincy". The Quincy wanted to protect human beings from the Hollows. With such a clan becoming aware of the workings of the world, the Shinigami would approach them to explain things further. Unfortunately the discussions did not go well. The Quincy did not see Hollows as Humans. They were beasts and when they learned about the more intelligent Hollows, they felt that their actions should not go unpunished. They should pay for the crimes of killing humanity, not be purified and allowed to go to Soul Society! Thus the discussions fell out and the Quincy would resume their Holy Crusade. Their influence spreading to great nations and allowing for Quincy to thrive as a secret but powerful family in the West. In the east there existed powerful mediums but they were unorganized, isolated, and spread among the eastern world. Thus there was a great dilemma back in Soul Society. They took this issue to the Spirit King, where long discussion was held. It was finally agreed that the Quincy needed to be exterminated in order to preserve the balance of the world. Thus the Shinigami descended into the night, burning down churches, and Quincy backed establishments. In the east, though the Highspec mediums were scattered, the Shinigami took no risk. It was becoming a three way war, a war in the West with Quincy, a war in the East with the High Specs, and the eternal war on Hollows. They would kill the monks and sages in the east, thus earning the name "Shinigami". In the west, with the rampant plague of death caused by them to the Quincy during the war, they became known as "Soul Reapers". Humans soon feared the Reaper, speculating that one was always close in order to take their life should they fall to illness or old age. It was a gruesome war but they were unable to make proper strides against the Hollows. During their war on humans, the Hollows were quiet. They were starting to understand evolution throughout the millennium. Now there were many a Hollow whom were larger than the heavens. The strongest Balancers whom were going to be sworn into the service of the King, would now be tasked with a new responsibility. Only they had the power on average to fight against this new breed of Hollow. Yet they feared what was lurking in the shadows of Hueco Mundo. This group thus would become known as the "Zero Division" aka the Royal Guard. This group would go into secracy, along with the Spirit King in order to protect their leader from the potential Hollow threat! They would train in secret and try to discover the secrets of Hollows, as well as the human world and the powers which manifested. They would not be the only "faction" in Soul Society. The Tsukiyomi took wind of the Zero Division and thus formed the Stealth Force following their principals. Amaterasu would thus help to fund the Kidou Corps and due to the rivalry between the clans, the factions remained separate entities. It was around this time that the second Captain Commander came into power, a man from the Izanagi house. This was the reason that Amaterasu and Tsukiyomi acted the way they did. This left Susano'o as the odd clan out. They still retained the feelings of their founding father, that of fighters and so settled to make sure that Soul Society would not grow weak due to being humanitarian and "civil". They'd take over running the Shino Academy, acting as teachers. This would ensure they could teach the future Shinigami to grow strong, while they took reign of businesses in Soul Society and kept their power humble. Thus the dark story of Soul Society came to pass, leading them into into the present day. The Thirteen Laws The ultimate law is to maintain balance. It is against the law for a Shingami to give their spiritual power to humans. It is against the law for a Shingami to use forbidden kido. It is against the law for any citizen of Soul Society to create weapons of a dangerous nature not sanctioned by the feudal government. To do so is treason. It is against the law to attack a captain. To do so is treason. It is against the law to commit terrorist action(s) or attempt overthrow of the balance of Soul Society. To do so is treason. It is against the law to commit murder. It is against the law to kill a Human that a Shinigami has not been ordered to kill. It is forbidden for a Shinigami to acquire or attempt to gain Hollow-like powers. It is a crime for a Shinigami to remain in the Human World longer than a certain time limit. It is against the law for the Gotei 13 to meddle in the affairs of the noble families unless the family in question breaks one of the laws of Soul Society beyond a shadow of a doubt. It is by ancient law that two Shinigami cannot hold the same Zanpakutō. They must fight for the honor of bearing the spirit, with the spirit going to the winner, and the loser being executed. Shinigami Hierarchy The Branches of the Military The main organization branch of the Shinigamis is the Gotei 13 which is divided into 13 different divisions, each having a different purpose and/or goals. However, they all work together as the primary defense as well as offensive force of the Soul Society. Gotei 13 Divisions The 13 Divisions of the main branch of military. Spoiler: click to toggle The Onimitsukido* (Secret Mobile Corps) The Onimitsukido the second largest organization that Shinigami join, and one of the three main branches of military in Soul Society.The Onmitsukidō is one of the three forces under the direct supervision of the Central 46 Chambers. If the Gotei 13 operate openly, the Onmitsukidō patrols and conducts surveillance in enemy territory and carries out top-secret operations, such as assassinations and the execution of Shinigami who have broken the law. If the Gotei 13 are considered an exterior guard, then the Onmitsukidō is an interior, covert guard. Additionally, members of the Onmitsukidō are not members of either the Kidō corpse, or Gotei 13. They are a separate branch and group. The only way that a member of the Onmitsukidō can become a member of the Gotei 13, is by being hand picked by a Captain of one of the Gotei 13. There are five components to the Secret Mobile Corps; Spoiler: click to toggle Kidou Corps* Third branch of the Military is the Kidou Corps who are a separate branch of Soul Society's military that excels in the art of Kidō. They take students from the Academy that excel in Kidō and train them to further their abilities. They are responsible for opening the Senkaimon between the human world and Soul Society. As well they are responsible for releasing the Sōkyoku seal during executions. However, much of what they do is done in secret. Furthermore, the Kidou Corps is not a part of either the Omnikitsukido, or the Gotei 13. They are a seperate entity entirely. Similar with the Omnikitsukido, the only way a member of the Kidou Corps can become a member of the Gotei 13, is by being hand picked by a Captain to be a member of their squad. Royal Guard Coming soon..... Noble Houses (If you wish to apply for a house please PM an admin. Noble Houses require 250XP upon creation to join.) The Noble Houses act as the corner stone of Soul Society, thus they have the most weight with influence over the governmental institutions and even institutions outside of the government. Due to their influence, the military have no authority to act against a noble family without evidence that their actions are treasonous to Soul Society. Combat Masteries Name: Hakuda Combatant Rank Required: Description: You're good with your hands and able to fight well with your body. For an ordinary user, they can only throw a kick, punch, etc four times in one turn but for you, you can perform twice the amount of kicks, punches, etc within Hakuda during a turn. Prerequisite: Cost: 300 XP Code for Masteries Name: Hakuda Expert Rank Required: Taisa Description: You're a seasoned fighter now, able to throw three times as much kicks, punches, etc in one action. However, now you've gained an eye for combat, able to interrupt a single action with your own. Though this doesn't guarantee you a hit (and if you screw up, you'll be taking 1.5x damage for it), it does give you an edge over your peers. Prerequisite: Hakuda Combatant Cost: 600 XP Code for Masteries Name: Hakuda Master Rank Required: Chūjō Description: Fighting with your body comes natural to you now, you can dole out more punches than your peers (three times as much, just like an expert), You can interrupt two actions now. Yet what you've really gained is strength. With this you strike with your Hakudaa (punches, kicks, etc) with a Weak Modifier on top of all your strikes. Prerequisite: Hakuda Expert Cost: 1000 XP Code for Masteries Name: Zanjutsu Starter Rank Required: N/A Description: The sign of a good swordsman is the ability to gauge his opponent's strikes (in terms of power), as well as the power you put into your own strikes. At this level you can tell when your opponent(s) utilize slashes of (weak and medium) as well as ordinary sword strikes with no problem. You can also power your strikes with a weak modifier. When you do this, the mastery enters cool down for five seconds. Prerequisite: N/A Cost: 300XP Code for Masteries Name: Zanjutsu Expert Rank Required: Taisa Description: The sign of an expert swordsman is the ability to gauge his opponent's strikes (in terms of power and speed), as well as the power you put into your own strikes. At this level you can tell when your opponent(s) utilize slashes (of weak, medium, strong) as well as if there is a speed modifier on their slash (though you can't quite tell how fast). You can also power your own strikes up to medium by focusing your reiatsu into your blade for one post (five seconds), this is only good for one post, and it must cool down for another 5 seconds after the duration ends. Prerequisite: Zanjutsu Starter Cost: 600XP Code for Masteries Name: Zanjutsu Master Rank Required: Chūjō Description: The sign of a master swordsman is marked by the desire to continue learning the way of the blade. Your study now enables you to gauge the opponent’s strikes (in terms of power and speed), as well as the power you place into your own strikes. At this level you can tell when your opponent(s) utilize slashes (of weak, medium, strong) as well as if here is a speed modifier on their slash (including which modifier it is). As a master, you can now strike with a slash of Strong power, though you must pump in reiatsu into your blade for 5 seconds before you do so. It lasts for 5 seconds, and then must cool down for 10 seconds. This also works in order to block a strong attack as well (be them energias, kidou, projectile or otherwise). Prerequisite: Zanjutsu Expert Cost: 1000XP Code for Masteries Name: Hoho Starter Rank Required: Description: Like a swallow, you're pretty quick. You're able to move greater distances than your peers by adding in extra steps. This enables you to dodge better (by adding one additional meter) when you do so but the real purpose is to help push your Shunpo. With this you can now perform Shunpo with an additional five meters, making for a total of fifteen additional meters. This Mastery also enables you to learn advanced Shunpo techniques. Prerequisite: N/A Cost: 300XP Code for Masteries Name: Hoho Expert Rank Required: Taisa Description: Swallows can carry coconuts so long as it beats its wings 43 times per second. You have achieved this metaphorical ability. You're able to move greater distances than your peers by adding in a set of steps. This enables you to dodge better (by adding two additional meters) when you do so but the real purpose is to help push your Shunpo. With this you can now perform Shunpo with an additional ten meters, making for a total of thirty additional meters. This Mastery also enables you to learn advanced Shunpo techniques. Prerequisite: Hoho Starter Cost: 600XP Code for Masteries Name: Hoho Master Rank Required: Chūjō Description: You’re like a falcon, swooping down to pick up its prey with lightning speed. Just like before, you dodge better by two meters and have an additional thirty meters to your Shunpo but you've discovered more. You're far faster than an expert, when you utilize this mastery, by focusing solely on your footwork (no attacks can be made except dodging/Shunpo) for ten seconds (two turns), you're able to gain a weak speed boost for five turns (twenty five[25] seconds). Prerequisite: Hoho Expert Cost: 1000XP Code for Masteries Name: Kidou Starter Rank Required: Description: You are enlightened, far better than your peers; you understand the delicacy of controlling Kidou for combat use. Alternatively you can delay the actication of your own kidou for 5 seconds. Prerequisite: N/A Cost: 300XP Code for Masteries Name: Kidou Expert Rank Required: Taisa Description: Your understanding of Kidou has gone further; you are now able to combine the usage of Kidou fluently in one action. For example, one post contains four actions, with this Mastery you can utilize a Kidou Twice in one action, while only paying the charge time for one. When you do this, the strength of the technique decreases by one level (If Kidou is Medium, it will drop to Weak strength with minimum of Weak strength). After three usages of this mastery skill, you will enter cool down for ten seconds. Prerequisite: Kidou Starter Cost: 600XP Code for Masteries Name: Kidou Master Rank Required: Chūjō Description: You've been practicing the usage of Kidou for what feels like forever, the fine ebbs and weaves of this art are at your command. As a Master you're able fire kidous while bypassing incantation (this will weaken the kidou by one modifier with weak being the minimum of strength). This effect can be used along with the Kidou Expert skill and the negative effects are added together with a minimum still being weak. If two Strong Kidous are fired, they both will become Weak Kidous. Prerequisite: Kidou Expert Cost: 1000XP Code for Masteries |
