Love. What is love? Some might say that it's doing what you have to for others. But it's not. Love is when there's almost anything you would do for someone to stay with them and make them happy. Mason learned this lesson young, when he was thirteen. But he didn't learn it the normal way. He learned it when he figured out that his mother didn't love him. (And I'll post more later, because I have to find the document.) |

The day is bright, the air crisp and cool, and the ground cold. The perfect fall day. Mason's at school, but Lea's only four. She didn't have school that day. Lea heard from another preschooler that of you dig a hole deep enough, you can get to China. And being naïve, Lea believed him. So for days she's been digging. But the hole's too deep, she can't dig from the surface anymore. So little Lea gets into the hole and starts digging. But then she realizes that she can't get out. "Mommy!" she screams, crying. Her mother walks out after about ten minutes. "Yes, Lea?' "Help me out, please," she begs. "No. You got yourself in there, it's your own fault. Plus I don't feel like bending down." Her mother leaves. Lea stays in the hole for another two hours before Mason gets home. "Mason!" Lea says franticly. Mason runs over to the hole, leaning down and pulling her out. "Lea, why didn't you get mommy to help you out?" "She said no," Lea whimpers. That was the first sign. |

Fast forward a year. When little Lea is five and Mason is ten. Fall is there yet again, only the first snowflakes have drifted to the ground. Mason's moved to the middle school, so he isn't there with Lea anymore. Lea sits on the front step of the school. It's almost four. Where's her mother? She said she would be here at three. Lea's been waiting, and she's getting cold. Mason sits on the jungle gym, doing his homework. His mom has forgotten to pick him up yet again, but that's normal. But he can't go home. It's too far of a walk. He figures him mom will realize he's not there and come get him. So why would he walk? He's got nothing better to do. Lea's probably home, so thats fine. He's always the forgotten child. An hour passes. A little face has appeared beside him. Lea's. She walked one fourth of a mile to get here. Mason wraps her in his arms. It's getting cold out. It isn't for another hour that his mother gets there. "Mom! Where were you?!" asks Mason as he puts Lea in the car. "At home. I didn't feel like driving." "Really?" "Yeah." "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? WE'RE YOUR CHILDREN!" Their mother slaps Mason hard across the face. "Don't you yell at me," she says angrily and starts driving. That's when it started to become clearer. |
