My childhood home went up in flames because of a couple teenagers that were playing with fire and a landlord that never got around to changing the batteries in the smoke detector in our lovely house. You're either thinking about how unfair that is or you're confused. Life can be like that- unfair and confusing. But I'm no longer bitter. I was taught by Grandmother not to be selfish and complaining about what I have lost would be selfish. But telling you my story is not selfish, yes? And you're probably curious by now, so I will tell you the story of Mei Li, the deaf Chinese-Korean girl, the girl with the odd hair, the girl who's afraid of fire and lives in silence. I will start when I was ten, on the night I lost so much that mattered to me. ********** I woke up because I couldn't breath. My eyes shot open as I coughed in an effort to clear my lungs, and a small scream slipped out when I saw that the flames licked the blankets on my bed. I stood on my bed, pressing myself against the wall to stay away from the flames that threatened to devour the bed and me. I screamed and screamed and screamed, but the smoke got in and I was unable to scream through the coughs. Desperation overcame me. I could faintly hear a scream that sounded like Ji. I leapt off the bed, let out a noise of pain as the flames made contact with my feet and legs. I pulled at the window, desperately trying to yank it open, but the lock was jammed. The heat of the flames as they snatched at the edge of my nightgown scared me. The fire was consuming everything it could, and I was afraid it was going to destroy me too. The pain made spots dance in my vision. The window refused to open. I could see Juniper being taken out of my mother's hands so that the paramedics could treat her burns and I could see Ji frantically pointing me out to the firemen. There was panic on his and my mother's faces when they saw me pounding on the window. But where was my father? "Mei!" I heard him yell, and I realized he was still inside the house with me. "Mei!" And then I heard a thump that sounded like his body hitting the floor. "Daddy!" I cried, trying to go to the door, but getting horribly burned in the process. I went back to the window, but the pain from the burns was too much. The last thing I remember is my own scream as I hit the floor and the flames began to crawl over my body, making me part of their path of destruction. ********** It all happened so fast- the fire, the pain, the fear hit me like a tidal wave, and then, in a second, it was over for me. When I woke up this time, my throat again felt scratchy and I experienced a brief moment of panic, but then I opened my eyes and discovered I was in the hospital, that I was safe. What I didn't realize then was that I had opened my eyes to a very different life than the one I had closed them in. Edited by thetotalsimsgeek, Aug 25 2014, 04:45 PM.

Nothing gets infected faster than severe burns. And there was one infection the doctors didn't catch until it was too late: the infection that had worked it's way to my cochlear nerve. My skin healed. My cochlear nerve didn't. I never heard again. But that was not why I was crying when I got out of ICU. I was crying because I had found out that my father had been burned beyond repair and had inhaled too much smoke. He was dead. Ji had a permanent scar across his chest from where he had broken through a window to get out and the glass had cut him through his pajamas. Juniper was alright. My parents had rescued him from the fire early enough that he would have no permanent damage. My mother seemed alright, but when the antibiotics stopped working and her burns stopped healing, the doctors began to worry. When she had to be moved back to ICU, my brothers and I began to worry. And when her heart stopped beating, there was no more worry for her. There was tears from me and my siblings, and there was concern about us from the doctors, because now they had three orphans- one that was deaf, one that was barely one, and a third that was just a teenager with scars from the fire. So they began to look for a solution while I took comfort in spending time with my brothers and playing piano, even though I couldn't hear the music anymore. Enter Grandmother and Grandfather Kim, the seemingly harmless elderly Korean couple that were our maternal grandparents. They became our guardians, and life seemed fine. Of course, I was deaf and Ji was scarred, but the three of us were at least alive. We moved into our grandparents' home, and that's when my new life began.
