She has a scar on her right leg in the form of two 11 cm slashes that start almost in the midpoint between the knee and ankle and continues down and to the right, separated by 7 cm. Picture: Spoiler: click to toggle Personality: Cheerful and easy-going, Leya seems to always have energy to spare. She likes talking and going out with friends, though she always tries to return to the park every weekend to see her parents and help with the work. She enjoys working with Merle, her twin, to confuse people, though they never take the joke too far. She's honest to the point of being blunt sometimes, not realizing if what she said was offensive since she isn't good at reading moods. It's difficult for her to hate someone, always trying to maintain a neutral or positive opinion, though the opposite is also true, since it's difficult for her to really trust someone. History: Leya's parents were ethologists with vast knowledge of zoosemiotics, both living and working full-time in a big wildlife park 3 hours from the city. When Leya's mother, Sarah, found out she was going to have twins, she asked for a temporary vacation to live in her husband's brother's house for the last month of pregnancy, since it would be dangerous to give birth so far away from a hospital with a maternity ward. Leya and her younger sister Merle were born without complications, and after leaving the hospital, Sarah returned to the park with the twins. Leya and Merle were raised there for the first six years of their life, with both parents and co-workers taking care of them and allowing for them to come along in the less dangerous jobs, so they both learned to like animals from a very early age. When the time came for them to start school, Kyle, their father, arranged it so the kids went to his brother's house on Sunday night, stayed there for the week to properly concentrate on learning, and were taken back to the park Friday after school. Kyle once suggested that maybe the kids should stay in his brother's house instead of traveling so much, but both twins refused and didn't stop until they secured their right to spend their weekends in their parent's house. During those first years of their lives, Leya and Merle mastered the art of being confused for the other. No matter what their parents tried to make them look different, being born as identical twins meant it was next to impossible to tell them apart without some sort of aid. Aid that the kids tried to thwart as often as possible, always wearing the same clothes, or going for the kitchen's scissors if one of them got a haircut. During their first two years of school they kept enjoying to confuse all their friends and acquaintances, until their uncle needed to move to another house and the twins had to transfer to another school. However, the one their parents wanted was nearly full, and only Leya got in, so they had to find a different school for Merle. The twins were a little depressed at first, having been accustomed to being together all the time, until the second week. Merle had gone out with her uncle to get snacks while Leya stayed to finish her homework, and a couple of kids approached them and started talking to Merle as if she was her sister. When Merle tried to clear up the misunderstanding, the other kids didn't believe her until her uncle confirmed it was the truth, and even then they left while still skeptical. That was when the sisters discovered that the "it wasn't me, it was my identical twin" excuse had been used so much in the media people didn't believe it in real life even in the few cases where it was true. Their reaction was to look at each other for a couple of seconds, grin, and from then on never mention they had a twin again unless asked directly. Since they were young, both Leya and Merle showed an innate talent in working with animals, which was the reason why the park staff so readily agreed on letting them help. Leya liked spending time with the mammals and reptiles, specially the wolves. Merle, on the other hand, spent most of her time in the aquarium, learning to take care of the various aquatic creatures living there. By the time they were fifteen, both were working part-time there on the weekends; Merle was comfortable enough to do shows with the dolphins, sea lions and orcas, and with letting people watch when she handled the sharks, while Leya didn't need the animals to go out of their enclosure when it was feeding time, confident they wouldn't attack and she'd be able to pick up the signs if some of them were in a bad mood. This talent of theirs even manifested on wild animals outside the park, when the family went to other places on vacation; they'll never forget the time when Merle jumped from the boat into the water when a shark was approaching and proceeded to immobilize it and rub its belly. Traits: (3TP) - Animal Knowledge - Having been with animals all her life, Leya can easily understand their intentions based on body language and sounds. She has never seen extinct animals before so it's not exact, but she can compare them with existing species to have a general idea of their behavior and how to handle them, and of their strengths and weaknesses. Wild animals are always wild, so there's always the factor of unpredictability, and it's impossible to fully communicate with them; however, she can tell if they're hungry or protecting their territory, or the best reactions to minimize the danger. She can differentiate between a calling sound and a warning one, and based on the animal, imitate it to some extend; a curious predator that isn't really hungry would think twice about attacking a pack of things he's never seen before if he knows they're showing an offensive behavior or calling for help, for example. And a territorial animal may be placated if he understands some submissive signs that show the humans aren't going to take over his territory. Of course, if the animal is hungry or wounded, they tend to be incredibly aggressive no matter the external stimuli, and if the animal has never encountered humans before, they're very likely to automatically assume they're threatening. In those cases, Leya can at least tell if the animal is likely to be fast, to attack in packs, to wait until they're near or run after them, or if it can't climb trees or dislikes water. |
