"Come on Wild,” Rashido says, “we’re burning day light.”

It was late evening and Rashido and I had spent an eternity chasing after his canine companion who had us running rings around the forest in search of some “moonflower.” The fox had just led us to a violent river with steep twenty foot banks, and we were using a fallen tree as a bridge across the raging rapids. Rashido and his deranged animal pal had already made it across, now it was my turn.

“You know, Rashido, some of us are trying to go home alive today,” I snap at him as I take my first steps onto the sequoia. I stick my arms out for balance and carefully take another step forward. I look down into the river, its turbulent waters pound against the boulders and rocks that are scattered amongst the waves. I take a few more steps and continue my progress. ‘Almost there, just a few more strides,’ I think to myself. Suddenly a loose piece of bark gives way from under my foot, throwing off my balance. In a flash I find myself falling, I prepare for impact but the embrace of the frigid waters wash over me faster than I can process what’s happening. The current pulls me under and I catch my last glimpse of land as I make my descent. The feeling of water entering my nostrils shocks me to life and I vigorously fight my way up until my head breaches the surface. I bob up and down and do battle with the fierce waves; I tread the water with every fiber of my being, gasping for air in the process. With the all the air I’ve taken in I let out a scream: “RASHIDO!” I shout, but no one answers. As I’m tossed about like a paper bag, I listen for my comrade but only the sound of the roaring rapids greets my ears. Rashido has deserted me. Before I can let out another cry, I slam into a large rock. I quickly wrap arms around the boulder to keep from being carried away any further. I detect calls and direct my attention back to the banks, Rashido is standing there with a long branch, just over the diameter of his arm.

“WILD HANG ON!” he yells as he leans over the bankside.

He sticks out the branch just close enough for me to reach. I seize my first opportunity to grab onto it and hang to it for dear life. I paddle with my feet and get myself closer to the bank. Rashido starts pulling and I begin my twenty foot ascension .I solidly plant my feet into the muddy bank but it only crumbles beneath my weight and slides into the water. I try again but this time moving my feet more rapidly faster than the mud can crumble. I scale the bank within seconds until I’m just arm’s length away from Rashido. He hoists me onto land and I tumble to the ground exhausted. We sit in silence for a while, as I struggle to catch my breath only for Rashido to say something smart.
“Almost lost you there, didn’t I?” he laughs.

“Shut up,” is all I can manage to say. I’d had enough of Rashido’s bullshit for one day.

He just laughs then starts talking again.

“Listen, I’m going to get the flower, you stay here,” he instructs me.

I just nod and close my eyes, I hear Rashido walk away. After a bit, the chorus of the rapids sooths me, and the very thing that nearly killed me makes me drift off into a deep sleep.

An hour later………

By the time I wake up the sun had fully receded. It was now just past dusk and I struggled to see even a few yards in front of me. Disoriented and confused from my nap I stand up and call for Rashido. No response, at this point I was almost panicking. I stand up and take a look around. I was still at the edge of the river, but where was Rashido, he had to have been back by now. In the corner of my eye a light pierces the darkness.

“I’m right here Wild, calm down,” Rashido says holding a torch.

“Were have you been,” I ask.

“I got the flower and when I came back you were sleeping so I left to finishing getting the last thing,” he explains.

“You didn’t bother to wake me up and tell me? What if a grizzly bear started eating me in my sleep?”

“You can handle yourself,” he smirks.

‘Apparently Rashido thinks it’s now funny to constantly put me in danger. How the hell did I even just fall asleep like that?’ I muse.

“So, how’d you get the torch?” I ask.

“I figured we’d be out here for long so I brought a rescue flare,” he says as he begins walking back over the “tree bridge.”

“What are you doing?” I ask him with great concern. He crosses over to the other side without telling me. I sigh and quickly cross over after him, careful not to step on any loose pieces of bark.
“What was the last thing you had to get?” I ask as I jog up to him.
He raises his left hand which contains a feathery mess; upon closer examination I realize it’s a dead eagle.

“It put up quite a fight, nearly gouged out my eye when I got too close to her nest,” he says, indicating wound that went down his face.

“It had chicks?”

He nods.

“Oh, so I see orphaning animals is your new thing now,” I remark, disgusted by his random act of violence.

He shoots me a look then says something under his breath.

“So what’s all this stuff for anyway, you cooking up drugs or something?”

“No.”

“Then what’s all this for, and how did you know to follow the fox, how did the fox know where to go………..where’s the fox now?”

Rashido pauses, still taking in my barrage of questions.

“She’s gone,” is all he says.

For the rest of the way back to camp we don’t say a word to each other. I noticed something had changed about Rashido, I was getting that weird pit feeling that translated into fear , but what was there to be scared, was I just nervous because it was nighttime or was my subconscious trying to tell me something……….something about him. I knew he was keeping secrets from me, not only this whole adventure, but how he just left me there to sleep. Something very strange was going on, and it was a very bad kind of strange. By the time I can begin trying to answer my own questions we arrive at camp and the scene waits fills me with nothing but utter shock.
