Time: Midday![]() Red... All I see is red... I shake my head back and forth as I run, tripping over myself as I navigate the treacherous tangles of roots and vines traversing the forest floor. I can't seem to shake the haze clouding my eyes. The wind rushes past me as I fly across the forest floor, bounding over tree trunks and volcanic boulders strewn across the forest floor. That fierce wind, so harshly ripping at me just seconds before, suddenly disappears, and I know what's coming. The blinding light brutalizes it's way into my senses yet again, and I fall to the floor clutching my skull as it burns with a white hot fire, scorching the inside of my head. I sob violently, curled up in a ball, writhing. The fire flares once more, and I give a thunderous roar, shaking the ferns around me. As quickly as it came, the fire leaves again, and I am engulfed in red once again. Returning to my feet, I start to run again, towards the calling of the light. That's the only way I'm getting out of this. The only way that I can find her. --- Far off, faintly, I hear a voice... "Stop!" That sounded like Drake... I think, and the red clears for a split second. Then it's fire again. The thunder of my pained voice somehow rises above the blinding flames, and they recede, venomously spitting their retreat. This time though, the red doesn't return. Puzzled and relieved at the same time, I send a silent thanks to Mahina. In response, a small fox, of a type I don't recognize appears. No larger than a swift fox, this small denizen of the forest has a coat of burnished black, with smoky white accents. It's coat is rough and patchy, yet it appears healthy. Mahina must have recognized my confusion regarding this new arrival, because the fox bounds over to a massive boulder, and leaps atop the hulk of frozen lava in a single, impossible bound. Against the backdrop of the boulder, I can barely see the patchy little fox, who appears to blend perfectly with the boulder of mixed lava flow and condensed ash. The fox leaps back down and bounds away into the forest. I follow, and soon the sounds of a fight become apparent. I drop low, sneaking through the ferns, and look at the fox. It gazes intensely towards a clearing up ahead, and then looks me straight in the eye. With a slight dip of its head, its eyes suddenly lose their light and a look of fear washes over the animal. Mahina has obviously left the poor little tyke behind. Pushing the thought of the strange, exciting new species from my mind, I watch it as it leaps away gracefully, heading towards the large lava fields surrounding the base of the volcano. I creep forward, and as I peek my head from the ferns into the clearing, a stunning sight greets me. Drake is pinned beneath a woman, who smells effusively of honey and blood. She has a pair of ghetto-looking ice axes raised to strike him, and I recognize that the man who is perhaps my only true ally left on this island is about to die. A cold feeling sweeps over my body, but not one of fear. Rather, a cold rage engulfs me, and a desire to protect, to save, drives me from the undergrowth. "Drake!" I yell, leaping forth across the clearing. I savagely rip my knife from it's sheath, drawing blood from my exposed thigh as I do so. A thin layer of red now coats the edge of the blade, and I can see the liquid steaming in the cool air. "Z-Zach..... her axes..... drugged...... don't.... g-get.... cut....." Drake weakly mumbles when he registers my presence. I look at the woman, who begins to laugh maniacally at Drake's feeble warning. Looking at the crude blades of her axes, I notice a faint purple-ish sheen graces them when the light shines just right. Growling at her treachery, I begin to circle around the edge of the clearing, and she mirrors my actions. As I intended, I put myself between her and Drake, keeping him out of harm's way, if only for a moment. "First Zane, then Drake, now Zachary? I get all three of you in one mission? This is my lucky day it seems." She laughs, tensing up her legs and raising her axes slightly. Anticipating her lunge, I sidestep her blindingly fast swing, and outstretch a leg, sweeping her feet out from under her. She rolls out of the fall, and is back on her feet in an instant. Not wanting to let her totally regain her bearings, I leap towards her swinging my blade, but she catches my swing with her left axe and swings low at my abdomen with her left. I lurch back just in time, and I see her grit her teeth in frustration. Overpowering her, I push her right axe down with my knife and roundhouse her in the stomach, knocking the wind out of her. She falters, but only for a second, not long enough for me to press any kind of advantage. She takes my caution as a cue to begin her deadly ballet again, and swings at me repeatedly, trying to get around my guard. With just an undersized kukri, I struggle to keep pace but manage to sneak in some solid kicks to her sides and legs. When she seems to slow down, I make a rather daring lunge at her, trying to end the fight as quickly as I can. However, she redirects my stab with frightening finesse, and I briefly lose my footing as I stumble past her. "Join Drake now..." She says with a malicious chuckle as I turn just in time to see her poisoned axes flying towards my torso. Time seems to slow, and I see a pleading, frightened look in Drake's eyes as he observes the battle with despair. A cool glow, not unlike a mountain stream, washes over me, and I smile as I feel the blades cut into my side, no time to dodge. The look of relief and triumph that washes over the woman's face is quickly replaced with confusion when she sees my smile. In her shock she is slow, and before she can draw back I drop my knife and grab onto her forearms. Her eyes grow wide as I grip her as hard as I can, and she screams in pain as I feel the bones of her wrists snapping beneath my fingers. Letting go with my right hand, I reach up to grasp her throat, and she gasps for breath as I lift her off the ground, and roar in her face. She begins to cry, or at least she attempts to as best she can with my hand closed around her throat. With a snort of disgust, I throw her to the ground. She lays there whimpering as I grab her axes, snapping the handles in half and tossing them into a nearby bramble thicket. Walking over to her, I growl "As much as I'd like to snack on that rather... supple looking body of yours, I'm afraid that unfortunately there's no time for a barbecue. So you get off free this time. I won't bother warning you to stay away because I have a feeling you'll be back sooner than I'd like." A warm smile spreads over my face. "Sweet dreams, love. Oh and eat shit." I say sweetly, punching her in the temple as hard as I can. The satisfaction I get from watching her eyes roll back in her head as she loses consciousness is indescribable. Pulling out my knife, I rip the mask away from her face, making a note of her face for future reference. Then a devious idea springs forth from the sadistic, vengeful portion of my mind. You're rather appetizing, but quite clearly poisonous. What would fit you? Grinning, I pull up her shirt, exposing her stomach. I slowly, deliberately carve the words "This is Hemlock - Property of Zach" into her pale skin. When I'm done I step back to admire my handiwork, licking the blood from my fingers. I take a moment to examine my wounds, and see little beads of purple liquid forming along the periphery of the slash. I kiss my fingers and lift them to the sky, in the direction of the still visible moon despite the time of day. I owe Mahina for sure. I lean down and cut a strip of cloth from Hemlock's pant leg, effectively ruining them. Deciding I could use the material for something later, I remove her clothes, and leave her there naked as a cold rain begins to fall. Hopefully she freezes to death tonight... I tie the strip of cloth around my side, binding the wound after I clean all visible traces of the poison from my flesh. I finally turn around to see Drake who's eyes express shock as he babbles wordlessly as I stroll over to him. Kneeling beside him, I gently rest a hand on his shoulder, and close my eyes. A softly glowing light gently bubbles up from deep within me, and I feel it flow into Drake, and he sighs and relaxes, swiftly falling asleep beneath my touch. "Come on you fat bastard, let's get you back to camp..." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am writing an immediate followup which should be done by tonight. Hooray for dream sequences! Edited by Rashido, Dec 22 2013, 11:59 PM.
