Were taking Molly and the kids, that cool Red" Nick asks, while I'm already  throwing leather bags on their backs and fixing the lead to her horns.

"Go for it, about time she did something useful" he laughs while tossing more wood onto the pile.

Were already running later then I wanted, me and Red finished up faster then expected and so I let him catch some sleep while waiting for Nick to return, we leave the dogs to keep him company, James to the best of my knowledge is floating around the camp somewhere. "Gotta hand it to the kid he's good a keeping busy, some of his plans can be a little hairbrained but he pulls his weight that's for sure" I mumble to myself.

"Oh I see we're talking to ourselves again" Nick jokes patting me on the back.

"Well if you were better conversation I wouldn't have to" I joke back.

I pull out a smoke and even though I know the answer already offer one to Nick, he declines. Weird how some habits die so hard, was so use to offering smokes to my friends before this whole thing and still two months later it's a reflex.

"Suit your self, how bout one of these" I reach into my pack and pull out a coke tossing it to Nick.

"Hard to believe how much you can miss something as simple as fizzy sugar water eh" he remarks cracking open the can and taking a sip.

I look behind to see the kids following Molly as expected, didn't even need to put leads on them, they stick to her like glue. Various odds and ends can be heard rustling around in the packs the three goats carry. We were heading out towards Andy's camp with some supplies for him, and hopefully our soon  to be new friends closer to the ocean.

"Think they'll let us use their raft?" I muse blowing smoke into the air watching it drift into the clear blue sky.

"Fuckin hope so, shit out of luck if they don't" Nick says in a surprisingly matter of fact type of tone.

"Well I'm sure some gifts will put us in their good graces, not to mention Andy says they do a lot of business so his word should count for something" some smoke drifts into my eye I slow my pace while I reach up to rub the stinging sensation away.

We walk along the path, the sunlight piercing the canopy giving everything a speckled appearance , I look around admiring the natural beauty, birds can  be heard chattering, a gentle breeze causes the oceans of ferns that parallel the path on both sides to sway almost rhythmically. It's beautiful in its simplicity my pace slows while I drink in my surroundings, until I feel a pull on the lead waking me from my day day dream, I look back to see Molly trying to grab pieces of fern while keeping pace she'd settled down unbelievably didn't fuss or get flighty around people any more, mind you Red was still her favorite he didn't even need the lead she just followed him around almost like a dog, some nights if we'd seen signs of the wild dogs Red would even sleep in the shelter with the goats, for a man that's capable of impaling you on a tree he sure could be a big softy sometimes.

"He lets take a break sit down and have some lunch, Molly's hungry anyway" I say to Nick who had been wandering a litte ways ahead.

"Sure, looks like a decent spot to sit up here" he points to a fairly large tree that had fallen over god knows how long ago.

Nick walks over and sits on the log, I follow suit and tie Molly's lead to a thick branch extending from the log. She happily wades into the sea of green munching away on ferns as content as can be her two kids on her heels the whole time. We set our bags down at our feed and unpack our lunch, some fish along with some of the blackberrys that seem to grow wild on the island, not exactly a balanced meal but it'll have to do.

"Can't wait to start working that forge" Nick beams with excitement at the thought

"Oh you'll get your chance buddy no doubt about that, so what we're you up to last night anyway?" I ask taking a drag off my smoke.

"Well I decided to head down towards the main camp and see how good the patrols actually are at their job." He takes a sip from his water bottle washing down some fish.

"And?"

"Not that great honestly I mean they aren't bad I didn't try to cross the actual perimeter, but if you took your time and played it smart you could sneak in as long as you don't mind skirting the outside for a bit, seems they've always got lookouts keeping an eye out on any approach from our direction." He gets the last few words out while eating some berries.

"Nothing overly surprising about that" I mumble while eating my lunch.

"Looks like the goats are done" Nick points toward the three animals all standing together with the large ferns surrounding them as they stare at us.

"Well let's go pay Andy a visit them" I say tossing the fish bones off into the bush.

Roughly noon

We arrive at Andy's camp it's surprisingly well kept they obviously have much higher standards then the main camp. There is on large sturdy hut and a smaller tent filled with fire wood to keep it dry during the heavy rains we get with seemingly little warning.

"Hey Andy, it's me and Dave" Nick shouts announcing our arrival.

I young woman emerges from the large hut to greet us, her blonde hair scattering the sunlight.

"Andy's just stepped out but he told me about you two, him and Scott should be back any minute, would you like something to eat or drink?"

I can't help but notice the way her red lips stand out against her white complexion.

"We just ate thank you but we wouldn't mind some water" I look over at Nick who nods in agreement. "I'm Dave and this is Nick" I introduced myself while extending my hand to meet hers. I'm surprised by how soft her hands are compared to everybody else's.

"Sure just give me two seconds" she smiles, her blue eyes lighting up, I'm sure they don't see many new faces out here especially since the lockdown.

She picks up to cups made from bamboo and dips them into the pot next to the fire.

"I'm sorry if it's still a little warm, I only finished boiling it just before you two arrived, oh I almost forgot I'm sure you already know but I'm Mary, Andrew and Scott's sister" her voice is quite cheerful given the circumstances surrounding all the smaller camps.

"Hey it's you two" another cheery voice can be heard coming from the forest as we sit down.

I quickly shoot my hand into the air to wave before bringing it back down and securing Molly's lead.

"Ya we just thought we'd pay a little visit, honestly we've got a bit of a favour to ask if that's all right" I fidget around finally getting the knot right.

"What ever I can do for ya, just ask" Andy says sitting down across the fire from Nick and I.

"Well remember that guy you said lived by the beach, what was his name.."

"Name was Joe" Nick inturpts.

"Ya Joe was wondering if you could introduce us, were hoping he might have a raft or boat we can borrow" I finish pointing towards the cigarette in my mouth to ask if the mind.

Mary nods, giving me permission to light it, I extend the pack to offer her or her brother one but they both refuse.

"Well your in luck Joe and Scott are on their way here right now they were only a minute or two behind me" Andy says pointing back towards the path he had come from. "And what's with the goats anyway?"

"Fuck almost forgot" I chuckle "I'll explain when.." I turn to look at Nick
"Joe" Nick answers poking at the fire.

"Ya Joe when he gets here with Scott" I finish my thought.

"What ever you say" Andy smiles, "Mary can you fix this shirt for me I managed to get it caught on a branch and tore a hole down the side" he says tossing a balled up shirt towards Mary.

She enrolls the shirt sighs and shakes her head "what are you doing always ripping your shirts, I'm going to run out of thread at this pace, seems every time you leave you come back with something needing to be stitched" she sits cross legged with the shirt on her knee, reaching down by her feet to grab her sewing kit.

A rustling can be heard coming from the bush. "Here comes lunch" Andy smiles at his brother Scott and their friend Joe walking into camp carrying several piglets. "Spring snares are a wonderful thing there's at least 30 pounds of usable meat and it only took me maybe 3 hours of actual work setting those traps" he smiles obviously proud of himself.

"Seems like a solid return to me" says Nick while unloading some of the things from the goats packs.

Molly was carrying tgeyd majority of the weight with the kids carrying much lighter packs this was more of a training exercise for them then anything. But Molly had be being trained by Red he usually got her to help carry fire wood.

"Here pass me the supper I'll get it ready while you boys talk" Mary says taking the 4 piglets from Joe and Scott, and walking over to prepare them by the fast moving stream that ran by their camp.

"So Joe, in Dave this is Nick, pleasure to meet ya, I'm sure you've heard about what's going on at the town" he nods his head "good good, well me and Nick have a proposition for you and I believe Andy said you have a friend"

"I'm listening" Joe says while running his hands through his medium length brown hair.

"Well Nick, I and a few others have some plans to get this whole town situation sorted out, you know, we shouldn't be getting shafted because we don't want to live in that cesspool, so we were hoping we could count on you, and this goes for your family to Andy, to help us get everything in order how we need it, how's that's sound" I look up from lighting a smoke. Extending the pack towards Joe who to my surprise takes one and lights it.

"Well what exactly do you need to get in order?" Asks Joe while blowing a thick grey plum of smoke into the air.

"Well Andy says you've got a raft of sorts and we were hoping we could borrow it, were also hoping Andy could wait at your camp with you and the goats while we were gone" I pause and see Joe raise an eyebrow

"What do you need a raft for?" He leans back putting his feet up on a rock.

"Well you know the ship, well me an Nick are going to go get some supplies, we've kind of capitalized on it being the only guys that can get on and all, usually just use our raft but it's to close to the main camp to get to, not to mention  we don't need they guys in charge there knowing what we're up to" I tap my finger on my smoke causing the accumulated ash to fall to the ground.

"And why is it your the only ones who can get on?" Another plum of smokes drifts into the air as he speaks. "I mean what's going to stop me or anyone else with a raft from heading out there to get stuff"

"It's locked up you could paddle out their but you'd just be wasting your time, be stuck rummaging around the boiler room" Nick interrupts with a confident smirk.

"Well then what do I get out of this little proposal then" Joe stares us down attempting to negotiate.

"Well we've got a couple things salvaged from the ship we brought along as payment to both you and Andy, we don't expect anything for free" I reach towards Nick who passes me a couple bottles of wine as well as a few other luxuries like soaps, I pass them on to Andy and Joe as well as a couple extra smokes.

"Well what if I say that's not enough" Joe answers thinking he has the advantage in the negotiations.

"Well what if I told you to choke on my dick?" Nick answers almost instantly.

A look of shock graces Joe's face and he almost falls backwards.

"What Nick is saying is that your raft is just more convenient, we are perfectly capable of making our own and cutting you out of this deal, I'm sure Andy and his family would gladly take your payment in exchange for lending us a hand." I say with a smile, watching Joe's fade as he realizes he doesn't have the leverage he had hopped.

"Well I guess I don't have much of a choice then do I" Joe remarks taking his payment and putting it in his own pack.

"Well it sounds like we should get going then eh" Nick stands up stretching his arms.

I untie Molly from the branch and we head off towards Joe's beach camp.
