Truthfully as I see it, gender is not real.

Gender is a social construct to provide features or traits a culture associates with male or female, otherwise known as masculinity or femininity, and apply them to things that have no sex, such as objects or concepts. Some are loosely based off of the corresponding hormones that are associated to certain behaviors (being more nurturing is "feminine", being more dominant is "masculine", etc.).

There are cultures out there that believe in a non-binary gender system, like some Native American tribes believe in being two-spirit, or showing off these perceived characteristics of either or both masculinity and femininity when it does not "match" their sex. The practice of deciding a young girl becoming a "sworn virgin" in Albania has been around since maybe the 16th century if I recall correctly, where the girl takes on all the roles of a man, even in name and dress, and live out their lives in the society as such, essentially taking on a masculine gender--or quite possibly, considering their vow of heavy chastity, may even be considered a third gender. And then you have things that are agender or third-gender or combined, such as deities--imaginary gods all cultures at some point worshiped or paid tribute to.

Speaking of gods, there are other concepts that are affiliated to "gender". I'll keep it local for me, and talk about US shit. Colored pigment is associated to a sex, therefore genderizing it. Pink is for girls, blue is for boys (even though originally, it was reverse--only goes to show gender's own credibility). There seriously are people who will not buy something for their kids, their friends, or themselves--young or old--because of the item's color. Not even as a joke, they're just retardedly serious. Something as benign as font is genderized. Cursive handwriting can be considered feminine and not for boys. Scratchy bullshit, I guess, is more masculine then. Even the cut of clothing, somehow, has gotten to a point where people in casual wear consider something more feminine or more masculine, such as a v-neck for a man's shirt being more feminine, or if material were made in part with lace. Vegetation such as flowers can be considered more feminine, just as jewelry--actually, a lot of ornamentation is considered feminine. Conversely, short hair is considered masculine, as are, to a further extent, defined muscular physique (the last part I can at least understand because testosterone can help define muscle more than estrogen ever will, or some science trash).

But I did just touch on something that I think is why gender should, altogether, be abolished, aside from all these petty things here: gender roles. Look, I totally get the origin of where they came from, with the hunters and gatherers whatever. That shit is even reinforced in ancient "sacred" texts (I only know the Bible, and Leviticus is all about setting down ground rules, like how it's an "abomination" for a woman to wear man's garb and a man to wear a woman's cloak, etc.) from thousands of years back. Even junk like aristocracy and social hierarchy, from a since civilization developed, there were assumed roles. But we are in a modern era. I'm not even going to go too in depth about it because it's a little much for me right now and I've got a date with the shooting range soon, but seriously, fuck these other people shoehorning you into a role based on qualities associated with a sex. I mean, they're allowed to have an expectation of you, but if in root it is unjustifiable, then in explanation it too is unjustified.

I think in particular it's these cultural expectations of people's sexes and deriving gender based on such that some people seriously are like "I don't feel like I fit in as a man/woman in this body". Yeah, when you view society as pressuring you to like certain things or act a certain way based on your sex, I'm sure some people feel like they'd want to "change their gender". If gender didn't exist, I seriously think this shit wouldn't even be an issue.

I accept people who consider themselves transgender, like ok, that's how you want to identify yourself as, then fine. If you pull it off convincingly, I'll call you the opposite from now on. No problem people, be neat about it. But that's it. I still disagree with this overly-cerebral concept in general. And honestly, when someone's issue turns from their gender to their physical sex, where they would pay money to cosmetically mutilate their genitalia just to somehow really feel like the other sex--because it's sex at this point, not gender--then that's a whole other thing. And yeah, it's something I don't understand, I won't understand, and I'm not at all supporting.

TL;DR, gender is a social construct so it's innately bullshit, if it didn't exist or wasn't taken as seriously as it is, we wouldn't have people complaining about it and coming up with mounds of Tumblr non-binary shit beyond transgender.

The end, that's my rant, hope it made sense because I don't proofread, bye, I'm gonna go shoot up some targets you pussies.

My eyes hurt from the contrast, like the text here looks green-y red-y yellow-y. You owe me an eye test.

But you have some really good points and I agree with you about gender being a pointless archaic social construct that only over complicates things.

If you're gonna hang a gun on the wall, you'd better use it.

I understand the point you are making, but I think it's an extremely reductionist stance to take.

You're right that gender is a social construct, but you're wrong that it comes about from ancient hunter/gatherer gender roles. It come about from fundamental, biological differences between the sexes. The 2 sexes are - physically and emotionally - different. Therefore it stands to reason that there should be 2 genders. To be treated differently is not to be treated inequality. Or at least, it shouldn't be. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the idea of gender, but I do agree that there are issues with genders and them being restrictive. However, to say this means that genders should be abolished completely I think is too far. I don't believe that gender is anything more than an inherent property of sex; as long are there are 2 sexes, there will be at least 2 genders.

As for transgender, I can't really comment. From the way you speak, Jauntisteve, I assume you come from the same ignorant perspective as me here, in regard to transgender. Is it the social construct of gender that is the reason for transgenderism? If it is, then why the need for physical sex changes? I think transgenderism is an issue that is very hard to understand properly from a conventional person's perspective, and chalking it up to being the fault of the construct of 'gender' is, I think, inappropriate.

After really thinking about it I identify best as genderqueer. I don't really think I fit more into either gender, but I prefer male pronouns since I'm used to them and it's easier. I just don't like the social division and general attitudes towards the differences between male and female, and I just think I have somewhat equal masculine and feminine traits (though I would argue that only a few things are actually masculine or feminine and not neither or both).

to me gender is nothing but what your genitalia is. Inside you are a person.

it's kind of insane when people expect others to call them something other than what they look like. like how am i supposed to know you prefer to be called xer, xeno, xem. kinda wish we had gender neutral ones, but oh well.

I prefer "sex" as in what you're born with (either a dick or a vag) but I feel like kids nowadays have ruined "gender" with their bullshit.
