Creating a Wand

Wands can often be one of the most difficult things to sort out for a roleplayer so we have compiled some information to help you.

Cores include:
  • pheonix feathers
  • dragon heartstring
  • unicorn tail hairs
  • veela hair [makes for temperamental wands]
  • thestral hair
  • peacock feathers
  • hippogriff talon

The woods can be decided by Celtic calender:

  • december 24th-january 20th.
birch. associated with beginning, renewal and youth.
  • january 21st - february 17st.
rowen. associated with protection, expression and connection.
  • february 18th - march 17st.
ash. associated with growth, connection and surrender..
  • march 18th-april 14th.
alder. associated with endurance, passion, strength and battle.
  • may 13th - june 9th.
hawthorn. associated with balance, consequence and contradictions.
  • june 10th - july 7th.
oak. associated with life, strength, stability and nobility.
  • july 8th - august 4th.
holly. associated with the darker side, style, dignity, protection and honor.
  • august 5th - september 1st.
hazel. associated with wisdom, creativity, purity and honesty.
  • september 2nd - september 29st.
vine. associated with opportunity, happiness and wrath.
  • september 30th - october 27th.
ivy. associated with determination, change and patience.
  • october 28th - december 23rd
reed. associated with harmony, health and growth.
  • november 25th - december 23rd.
elder. associated with transition, evolution and continuation.

However, other types of wood are available. Here are more kinds that might be available with their symbolism:

  • willow: imagination, intuition and vision.
  • apple: beauty, love and generosity.
  • blackthorn: discipline, control and perspective.
  • fir: clarity, achievement and energy.
  • gorse: transmutation, resourcefulness and exposure.
  • aspen/popular: victory, transformation and vision.
  • yew: transference, passage and illusion.

A list of traits can be associated with the motion of the wand it is waved and this can have an effect on what the wand is particularly good for.

  • pliable (excellent for transfiguration)
  • swishy (good for charm work)
  • inflexible
  • springy
  • bendy
  • rigid
  • unyielding
  • brittle
  • supple

Wand size can vary from 7" to 18" and there appears to be nothing in particular which determines this. Generally, though, if you are short for your age, you'd feel more comfortable with a shorter wand.
