The road to Benden Weyr; M'kael's Beginning

The last beating had been too much. Mikeal had ended up crying on the ground in the middle of Benden Hold. Just because he had felt attracted to his best friend, Borno. Just because Borno was a guy...

Mikeal blinked away the tears that had inevitably come from the memory. It had been one Turn since then, and he had long since escaped to Benden Weyr. Wary of the other Lower Caverners, he kept his past hidden. He found to his delight that he was attracted to girls as well. On the 14th anniversary of his birth, Mikeal pleaded with Weyrleader J'xon and Senior Weyrwoman Sahanna of Benden to become a Candidate in an egg hatching ceremony.

J'xon and Sahanna realized that it would be best to have new blood in the weyr and decided to send him to Bitan Weyr to be a Candidate in their newest clutch of eggs.

In a little less than a month, he was situated in the Lower Caverns of Bitan Weyr, ready to be a Candidate. Though his excitement had peaked, he became ever more and more reserved as time passed. His bruises had healed a long time ago, but the scars they left on his mind hadn't disappeared. He hated being anywhere near anyone, and would avoid people whenever possible. His favorite haunts were the hatching grounds and the kitchen. He felt at peace smothered in the scents of cooking, as well as among the unhatched dragons. When he was there, he felt alone in a comforting way.

Soon it was time for the hatching ceremony. Mikeal's heart was pounding as eggs began to hatch. A blue nearby hatched and snuffled about. It awkwardly took a few steps before launching itself in the air at Mikeal. Unsure of whether he should be ecstatic or terrified, he froze. The hatchling hit him about gut level, bowling him over. Mikeal ended up on his back with the hatchling atop him. It jumped again, digging its claws into his back. Blood spurted everywhere as a much calmer bronze hatchling trotted up to Mikeal's bleeding, crying form. It sniffed at him before sitting right in front of him. Monolith was all Mikeal caught before passing out. When he awoke in the infirmary, Mikeal was sure it had all been a dream, but when he felt Monolith's mental connection brushing at his mind, he realized he was now a rider.

After he had healed sufficiently, he returned to Benden Weyr, a triumphant bronzerider in training. He still associated with the Lower Caverns staff, but M'kael (his truncated name) also had to work with the other weyrlings. He still stopped into the kitchens from time to time, reminiscing in his few happy memories from Benden Hold.
