http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04854XqcfCY I started this early for the first time since I've ever hosted. I am so proactive. This part will just be about the role theory, the creating of the setup and that sort of thing. Player reviews will come later, I guess. Flavor even later. Honestly, I'm a little conflicted. I loved designing this and the early game was pretty good, but I really hated how everything resolved in the end. It was very frustrating as both a person and a host to see it devolve into a lot of bullshit. I think the first thing to note about this game was that the subtitle for most of it being in progress was Whispers of the World Beyond. I actually cut the beyond part out out so the person who was Charlie couldn't just be "look at me look at me I'm the most important role and also town". That's how important I thought it was. Yes, I thought of Charlie as the single most important role when I made this setup. It's the whole reason the game was even made! I first thought of it around when N1 started in CM4, so almost a year ago. Specifically out of nowhere I wondered "why can Charlie and Maurice talk to dead people? That's silly, they're just normal guys". I mean it's obviously part of a part of the host thing, but idk. Why wouldn't they just be magic musical gods, those guys have existed in past CMs for a while! So I thought "hey some guy who interacted with dead people would the coolest role ever". I toyed around with the idea, and then stumbled into the role I had basically formulated while not even doing anything mafia related (I'm not giving away my sources though, I might use some other roles from said source in the future). That solidified the primary purpose of Death Whisperer, and that was never changed throughout the whole game. I think every other role was edited at least once. CMV kind of was a like of faith in that aspect- it threw out the whole idea of "dead people shouldn't affect the game any longer". So at one point I did consider having both Maurice and Charlie have the whole dead-talking thing, but I decided to just dismiss Maurice's as being the main host and Charlie's as supernatural because a lot of things in the whole Choral Mafia scene are honestly pretty silly (CM2 was about a guy trying to summon the music gods, I think that's all I need to say to justify myself there). So instead I took what little information I had about Maurice (the hostage that started CM4) and made that. I considered Maurice to be the second most important role because it was a counter to Charlie: it removed people from the game, but it kept them from giving their information to him, too. The original Maurice could do this every night from N3 on which was completely ridiculous and utterly destroyed in early playtesting. But honestly, I let playtesting feel pretty noticeably mafia sided because there was no way of accounting for this in it. It could out guilty reports from people who just died or people who hadn't claimed. In balancing, I valued this as the best role in the town and was very excited to see how it actually did. All that said and done, Charlie died N3 and didn't get to use the role at all. Naturally I was extremely pissed off with this development as both a person and a host. I spent a lot of time designing every role around it, and seeing all that go to waste was very disappointing. It's worse because I'll basically never be able to use it again because it will lose almost all the surprise factor to it. It had never really been tried before. Maybe I sort of hyped myself up with it since I was excited to see it in action for almost a year and it really isn't as cool as I'm making it out to be, but I kinda feel like my immense frustration is justified. One thing I wasn't even considering was when I said "deadtalk doesn't matter now that Charlie is dead", but the band could relay this information back to their living members. This honestly completely slipped my mind- I'm not the best at thinking things through in the world, I'll be the first to admit that. I had no intention of being deceitful to the dead uprising members and I do apologize for that. Paperblade did call me out on this and I did my best to amend that. I did consider it fair game when Charlie was alive, and was kind of expecting the band to make use of the dead people's information. Apparently someone did mention this to Manix at one point, but he dismissed it as something that seemed gimmicky, so I guess maybe Charlie just wasn't as good as I thought. So what else was there of note other than Charlie and Maurice's roles? Well, 23 others, for one. Hunter was another pivotal role. It was a role that had heavy influence on the night phases, but was just as weak as everyone else during the day (well except Chelsea Green and Annabelle). I felt like all the buffs were honestly necessary to give him a fighting chance, and they turned out to do well. Hunter probably would have won if not for the Infinity Mechanism sub, or at least have done a hell of a lot better. Interestingly, Hunter being able to choose 4 kills potentially had some really funny connotations. For one, a kill method could have been poison- I did consider this going into the game. What I didn't consider is what if Hunter wanted people being struck by lightning? Do I give him the power to control weather? What about heart attacks? This guy isn't Kira! These are the sort of things I consider funny I guess. Also notable is that Bradley is apparently a miracle worker cause he could save people who were cut in half. A noticeable portion of the town was fairly basic. Dan/Nate/Darius cop/tracker/watcher core was the town's primary investigative power. Juliette as voyeur was also there, but it's simply not as powerful at all. At one point she was a journalist, which would kind of be better I guess, but I didn't want town to be too awesome. Bradley/Kayleigh doc/safeguard is also nothing to write home about. Xavier as a roleblocker isn't that weird, Vincent 3 shot vigilante isn't either. KWinter/ 4 shot backup is standard, Frita was standard networker, Violet was just a 4 shot commuter. I guess Hector as an every other night omniguard was sort of interesting, I guess. It wasn't particularly creative but I think omniguard by itself has never been on SF. The Duelist role, Annabelle, was kind of interesting I guess. 2 shot dayvig with a bunch of restrictions like the bonus Balcerzak got in CM4. I had her as a regular one-shot dayvig at one point but I decided to experiment a little. Then I had her as unlimited dayvig that got a certain amount of ghostvotes after killing someone (1 the first time, 4 the second time, 9 the third time, instantly lynched the 4th time), but that on the other hand seemed too powerful. So I settled with this. Alice was honestly probably the only other particularly different role here. I can't completely take credit for this one, either, as I saw an anonymous one way letter sender somewhere on another site, so I just changed it around a little. It turned out not doing anything but I thought it was an interesting idea at least. The Band was kind of boring, I guess. Maurice was already discussed. Andrew had ninja, hitman, and janitor aspects, all of which are fairly standard. Jeffry rolecop and Christina roleblocker are very simple, Elisa lookout is just a scum watcher which is a bit unusual I guess, but hey. Zoe tailor is also a bit typical. The flavor didn't actually matter except for Hunter, which made it sort of just a framer/lawyer for Dan. Kind of weird I guess. Troy the avenger was a bit of a variation on mafia bomb. I thought it was pretty interesting, at least, even though it didn't get to do anything. Oh well. I don't think the game was terribly unbalanced. Thanks a lot to Ether for really helping me out on some of the worse parts of the game and made it function much, much better as a whole. It could have been balanced better, but it could have gone a hell of a lot worse, and I could never really tell who was going to win because of the multiple events that occurred I wasn't expecting until the last few phases of the game (from Night 6 on). So I'm happy it was at least down to the wire for the most part. As for if there will be a Choral Mafia 6 in the future, who knows? I honestly don't know too much about music and singing personally, but it seems to be a series that a lot of people look forwards to. If I do end up choosing to do so, it'd probably be a significantly smaller game, which would allow for easier balancing and better activity, hopefully. A hypothetical CMVI probably stay true to its roots of Day 1 starts and NOC, but if I can give it an interesting twist that changes one of those, we'll see. It'd probably have nothing to do with CM4 or 5 flavorwise. I hope you all enjoyed the game, at least. It was a very interesting and challenging experience as a host without a co-host, but ultimately I think it was one worth taking. Until the next part of postgame! |

THINGS I FORGOT *The eclipse and Kaoz thing! Okay so eclipse was posting, this much was obviously. What she didn't know was most of her role PM. This was all she got! Rust Servant, you are Xavier [SNIP] You are a bit abrasive and hot-headed. Some people say you should think more before doing things, but actions speak louder than words, right? That's worked out for you well enough so far, somehow. You are all about living in the moment. [SNIP] So when her role as Uprising Roleblocker was posted in the thread, that was the first time she knew her role too. Kaoz sent in night actions up until this reveal because of this, though he ended up idling. This came to be because they both requested it before the game started back in July, so I okayed it and it happened. *About the whole alias thing... well, they didn't end up mattering much. Why have them instead of names? I did know this going into the game, but I decided to. First of all, it would have sort of narrow down "who is Charlie" to the Band a bit. Unless you wanted to argue he could be cross dressing. Second of all I wanted to see how people would react to the sort of environment and how many would claim their character right away. I was actually a bit surprised with how few people the number turned out to be. I guess this doesn't have too much to do with the game but I found it interesting. |

Ooh-la-la, motherfuckers.

I really didn't see any reason to claim my character at all. I didn't even think it was important, heh. |
