Luke 2:21-40

King James Version (KJV)

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Luke 2:21-40

Amplified Bible (AMP)

21 And at the end of eight days, when [the Baby] was to be circumcised, He was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the time for their purification [the mother’s purification and the Baby’s dedication] came according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord—

23 As it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every [firstborn] male that opens the womb shall be set apart and dedicated and called holy to the Lord—

24 And [they came also] to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout [cautiously and carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

26 And it had been divinely revealed (communicated) to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

27 And prompted by the [Holy] Spirit, he came into the temple [enclosure]; and when the parents brought in the little child Jesus to do for Him what was customary according to the Law,

28 [Simeon] took Him up in his arms and praised and thanked God and said,

29 And now, Lord, You are releasing Your servant to depart (leave this world) in peace, according to Your word.

30 For with my [own] eyes I have seen Your Salvation,

31 Which You have ordained and prepared before (in the presence of) all peoples,

32 A Light for revelation to the Gentiles [to disclose what was before unknown] and [to bring] praise and honor and glory to Your people Israel.

33 And His [legal] father and [His] mother were marveling at what was said about Him.

34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, Behold, this Child is appointed and destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against—

35 And a sword will pierce through your own soul also—that the secret thoughts and purposes of many hearts may be brought out and disclosed.

36 And there was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old, having lived with her husband seven years from her maidenhood,

37 And as a widow even for eighty-four years. She did not go out from the temple enclosure, but was worshiping night and day with fasting and prayer.

38 And she too came up at that same hour, and she returned thanks to God and talked of [Jesus] to all who were looking for the redemption (deliverance) of Jerusalem.

39 And when they had done everything according to the Law of the Lord, they went back into Galilee to their own town, Nazareth.

40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace (favor and spiritual blessing) of God was upon Him.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

21 It was a common to wait to see if the baby lived before a name was given. Circumcision was done by the Jews after eight days to show that they were God’s people. Circumcision is still held very high in Jewish culture today and a rabbi is brought to the family’s home after the boy is eight days old for the rabbi to perform the circumcision.

22 It was a Jewish law to stay away from people after giving birth because they were considered unclean. Mary would have been unclean for seven days and also anyone who came in contact with her in that time. The circumcision most likely would have happened after going to the temple to offer sacrifice. They traveled from Bethlehem to Jerusalem.

23 This was because Abraham’s blessing from God was carried on thru the Jewish males. Males are to be leaders of their families and lead them in Godly paths.

24 This shows that they did not have money because the poor would sacrifice doves. This shows that the wise men had come yet because they would have had the gold to buy a goat or sheep for sacrifice. This also shows that they would have been able to have a donkey for the ride to Bethlehem.

25 Simeon was a man that looked to please God. During this time and even early people were looking for the Christ or Messiah to come. It is similar to people looking for Christ to return in today’s time. Simeon would most likely be a family name dating back to Jacob’s son, if so Simeon would be of that tribe. Simeon not being a Levite but spending much time learning the law shows that he looked to serve God out of faith not out of traditions as others of the day.

26 Sometimes we as believers know things that the Lord will allow to witness and do in the future, this does not mean when know when or even how or where things will happen. During this time not many heard or revealed things from God.

27 So the Spirit had lead Simeon to the temple to see the Messiah, the Christ. So Mary even though she did not have a baby by normal means went through the normal conditions or having a baby. Jesus was not born by the flesh but born by the Spirit so sacrifice was not needed for Him but just for Mary yet they still sacrificed the two turtle doves, one for each.

28 Simeon knew that his baby was the Messiah many did not ever come to know this as the truth it is. We should always give glory back to God when we are able to do things. We should always give God praise.

29 Simeon knew that the promise was fulfilled he would dying soon. Knowing who Jesus truly is brings us peace and makes death less scary then if we did not know Him.

30 Jesus means the Lord’s salvation. Jesus is the salvation we are given as believers. He came for the purpose to restore our relationship with God.
31 Jesus’ coming was something that was planned by God to happen since the beginning.

32 Jesus came also to reveal the truth to the Gentiles. The faith was Jewish before Jesus came even though there were some Jewish converts that were not Israelites. The Jews had the truth concealed Jesus would be the truth revealed. The Gentiles did not have the truth but Jesus was the truth to the Gentiles.

33 Even though they were told who Jesus was to be by Devine ways. Joseph was told by god in a dream and Mary had an angel bring her the message. Mary also knew she was a virgin who had given birth which is a sign itself. The wise men would most likely cause them to be surprised later when they came. The shepherd would most likely would have came already.

34 Jesus would be the fulfillment of many prophecies.

35Jesus would later be revealed for who he truly was but some would never accept Him as the Lord and Christ.

36 This shows that the 10 northern tribes were not lost tribes. She lost her husband early and never remarried but became a mouth piece for God at this time again rare. John who was born before Jesus would be the prophet that would be used to prepare people for Jesus. There may have been some that accepted Jesus as Messiah because of these two and the shepherd that came and later the wise men. The word may have carried that the Messiah had been born but would have stopped after the attempt to kill Him by Herod.

37 This was not common for people but showed a total devotion to the Lord. The temple was open for people to continually worship the Lord but certain sections were forbidden to go into even for some priests.

38 She also knew this was the Christ. When people see the truth about Jesus they share it. The people were looking for the Messiah since the kingdoms had fallen. They expected a great king but they received a Savior. Jesus will be King and reign on earth upon His return. We should be most thankful to God for Jesus and our salvation. Jesus came to redeem the people of their sins not redeem them from Roman control as people thought.

39 The wise men would appear sometime before they left. They also would spend a short time in Egypt before going to Nazareth. We learn this from Matthew. Joseph may have wanted to try to raise the Messiah in David’s city but had to go to Nazareth to avoid danger of the child being put to death.

40 Jesus was God in the flesh but He grew physically like all boys. Jesus became wiser and knew the words in His heart. Jesus is the word and would have learned it instinctively. Jesus was perfect even as He was a child. God would have done given Jesus into this family if He did not know they could raise Jesus to fulfill His purpose. God will also not call us to do what we can not handle without His help.
