“There Aint Nuttin in The Bible Bout Church Attendance!” or “Have You Lost Your Anchor?” You know the other day I was talking to someone about church and their response to me was, you know what Brother Jim, Church Attendance is not really that important, As long as I know God I am ok, right. Well I smiled at the fella and said you know what are you really sure?? Folks to many people these days says or tells me attending a church is not really that imporatant, well if that was not the case, why is it referance about the bride of Christ being his church is so important in the word of God? or why the 10th chapter of Hebrews verse 19 - 25 speak so much on it? Let me tell you why, attending Church is very imporatant and here is the reason why. 19.Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 -by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21- and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22- let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25. not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Breakdown: 10:19-21 The writer of Hebrews is insisting that they could go directly to the Father through Christ. Jesus Christ, the Chief Priest, provides unlimited access to the father. 10:22 The sprinkling of the heart with the blood of Christ accomplishes spiritual cleansing. All true believers then bear testimony to that cleansing by following Christ in the public witness of baptism. 10:23 The author knew the challenge it would be for the recent convert to remain faithful to their newly formed faith. He instructed his readers to help one another “hold fast.” He knew they would have a tendency to drift away from the truth. He anticipated their need for other believers to help them stay on track. 10:24 In essence, the author was instructing then to spur one another along, watch out for one another, take responsibility for one another. 10:25 Early Christians had a fellowship which drew them together for worship and preparation. The author of Hebrews asserts that this practice of assembling together ought to increase as the believing community sees the day of Christ approaching. This passage provides one of the strongest affirmations in the Bible of the crucial importance of the local church and the necessity thrust upon every Christian to be faithful to a local community of the saints. God wants His children to meet with other believers on a regular basis. He wants His people in church! One reason so many believers don’t take this seriously is that they don’t know the reason behind it. In my early days of being born again, I would opt to skip church on Sunday for a fishing trip, after all, my fishing buddy worked Monday through Saturday and Sunday was his only day off. Being Spiritually sound, I wouldn’t drift. I didn’t take church attendance seriously. The only fish you’ll catch here is “selfishness”. I didn’t know the reason behind it but I could justify my lack of attendance. I can worship God at home. I don’t need to go to church. The primary reason for going to church is to worship. And with all the good bible teachings on TV or the radio, or the Internet, I can be taught the Word. So, anything I can do at church I can do at home alone. (A Strong Argument and a Good point, Yes!)” “So why are we commanded to meet? Why is church attendance so important?” The writer of Hebrews says it is to safeguard against drifting. Have you lost your anchor? We are surround by forces that work to blow us off course. Sheer individual commitment alone in not enough to keep us in line. There are times when we feel as if our faith makes no difference. We see no fruit in our lives, and we don’t seem to be making a difference in anyone else’s life either. During those times we are tempted to pull up anchor and drift, or we just lose our anchor and drift. And then we drag ourselves to church and discover we are not alone. We hear others share how God came through for them when they were in a tight spot. Someone else shares about the pain experience when he left the faith. A new believer tells her story and rejoices in God’s grace. And something begins to happen inside us. We are spurred on to faithfulness! The accountability and encouragement found in church fellowship anchors us against the tide that works to sweep us away. We can develop a network of relationships with other believers that works to ensure we don’t abandon our faith when the pressure is on to do so. To neglect the regular assembling with other Christians is to miss out on the essential element in the development of our faith. Beloved, I have learned that every time the church doors are open, I can find an excuse to miss church and not go, but by “holding fast” I have discovered a blessing that would have been otherwise missed. Please do not give in to an excuse of not going or attending a church, do you really want to rob yourself of a real blessing? In closing I pray that we are anchored against the tide that works to sweep us away and remeber this verse. “23. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Amen. |

God created us for relationship. That is a simple fact. When God created the heavens and the earth, He pronounced everything to be good in His sight. When God created Adam, He said, "It is not good for man to be alone." And then He DID something about it. We need relationship and fellowship. It is not possible to walk this life alone. God created us for one another. And, what perfect fellowship we find in the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all perfectly relating to one another in complete unity and love. The church is a picture of that unity. |
