The idea of character profiles is one that has always appealed to me. As concise or lengthy as the author chooses, with sections covering areas such as personality, history, appearance etc, they give other writers the chance to learn about those they're going to be RPing with. However, the style of profile most of us are familiar is less compatible with our board for one simple reason. "What reason?" you might say, "It's always worked before." This is true. However, during the first thread here at City of Sin, conducted by Cereza and myself, I had one thing at the forefront of my mind. Suspense. The more you know about a character, the more predictable they can become. As we write with them more, we can sometimes guess what they're going to do, or how they're going to behave. In "First Night", Cereza and Adrian knew absolutely nothing about each-other, not even introducing themselves until the close of the thread. They spent the thread reading the other's actions, trying to gauge one-another and, to be quite honest, it was damn good fun. So, suspense is the key to City of Sin. Personalities can be faked, subtlety and lies go hand in hand with power and gaining the upper hand, histories can be altered to create a character that you're never quite sure of. That suspense, in my eyes, will keep things fresh. And hopefully, by the time the big plots start rolling and the reveals are made, you'll be on the edge of your seat, eyes glued to the screen waiting for the next reply from your co-writers. With all this in mind, we adopt a new, more free-form approach to character profiles. As with much of the Vampire lore, records the individual Vampires are rare to see, with myth and rumor taking centre stage in favour of a written history. Anything that exists will be fragmented, so be erratic. For example, you could pose a number of facts and rumors surrounding your character, like so: Fact: In 1889 Adrian was known to be in Paris, where he stayed until the outbreak of The Great War of 1914-18. Incidentally the first known movements of the Vampire. Rumor: Vampire matching Adrian's description seen a number of times in London in the late 50's and early 60's. Rumor: Adrian is believed to have frequented a number of raves in the British Isles over the course of the 90's and 00's. Fact: Adrian has been seen on multiple occasions with the same large group of Vampires, but these meetings seem to happen decades apart. Rumor: Adrian spent the 20's and 30's in the Far East, returning to Europe prior to the Second World War. Fact: Adrian has collected a number of priceless art pieces over the years, from all corners of the Globe. The idea is, whatever you feel comfortable revealing about the character, reveal it. Do try and tell us some things though, appearance being the main one (your image claim will also need to be linked at the start of your profile). After that, what you write and how you write it are up to you. Edited by Adrian, Aug 19 2013, 05:27 PM.
