The Sullen Survivor (Coterie)

On the night of Harper's ascent, many Kindred saw their lives significantly changed. Most members of the coterie saw their lot improved, and even Ariadne had found a new home. The flurry of activity made it easy to get wrapped up in other things, new schemes, new allies, new information to digest and investigate.

But one of their friends had been witness to a loss, been witness to something tragic. And despite the pleas of Dana or Whiskey, she had remained adamantly silent and sullen. When asked about happened that night, Natasha typically responded with one of two phrases - "I don't want to talk about it" or a simple "Fuck you, leave me alone." Dana and Whiskey tried to keep her busy, keep her involved, and though Natasha always attended club events, it seemed half-hearted or rote. The riding, the fighting, the partying - she participated, but her eyes remained hollow. And though she was there, she was distant, not brought back to earth even by Whiskey's rumbling laugh.

But she was a friend, a coterie-mate, or at worst, someone who had been through the same shit that the rest of them had. So when Whiskey reached out to everyone - not just the Brides, but all of those who were in those dark sewers - to try and discuss what to do about "the Tasha problem" it was a bit surprising. Sure, he was tacitly in charge, but it didn't seem his style.

Whiskey gathered everyone to meet somewhere neutral, somewhere that seemed safe and open to all. Which for Whiskey meant a dive bar, though at least he picked one near the Flamingo.

The Stage Door didn't have much flash, but there wasn't a ridiculous crowd, and music could be loud, and with the Brides, nobody would interfere with their conversation. Whiskey was there before anyone else, but Antoine was short to follow, as were other members who drifted in. After downing his third shot during small talk, Whiskey speaks to nobody in particular.

"She's going off. She's not being crazy, but just.... fuck if I know, different, ya know? Never been like this before. I mean, she's been fucked up ever since those tunnels, but that night, whatever the hell happened with Jacky? It's jacked something up, and I'm not sure how to fix it. Nothing seems to stick anymore, and..... shit, can't have our girl think she's riding alone. So... thanks for coming I guess."

Salvador shares a glance with Antoine, but doesn't offer any comment. His attention then goes back to Whiskey, or whoever else decides to speak up first.

Dana has a shotglass in front of her, but the liquid is still in it; she seems out of sorts as well. "Dammit, crazy shouldn't be fucking contagious," she mutters. Turning to Whiskey, "I bring her out to one of the rallies we're getting going, point her at the Satyn with the fucked-up bike, you know Jerry? Anyway, she used to be all over that shit, tearing the thing apart, figuring out what's wrong with it, getting it going better than the dealer. She goes up to it, hits the exhaust with her wrench a couple of times, stares at it, walks away. I mean, that just ain't her."

Ariadne slips into the bar and shuffles her way toward the other Kindred, taking whatever unoccupied space is closest to Antoine. She glances briefly at him, then Dana, before mumbling, "Could just be depressed. Happens, especially if she saw him." She doesn't sound entirely convinced of that, however.

Whiskey grunts in agreement. "Doesn't matter what I try to do, get her into a fight, put her in touch with a parts guy, she just don't have her heart in it anymore. I dunno, D, something's wrong. And... I mean, I can try, but I'm... ain't my strong suit. So I thought, you know... get you all to try and help to." Whiskey seems genuinely concerned, even sentimental, and doesn't seem to shy away from any source of help, even the advice of Ariadne.

Antoine chimes in. "Depressed could be the thing, maybe. But she knows her friends are there, right? Whiskey and Dana here are trying their best, so that's got to count for something, right? She reach out to anyone else? Or is she mostly just keeping to herself?"

He shrugs. "I mean, I can provide some attempt at guidance, but.... well, did she ever tell anybody what she saw anyway? I just remember her saying that Jacky's gone, but never heard any details."

Sebastian saunters in as Whiskey and Antoine exchange words. His ears seem to perk up from under his hat, even as he is a distance away. He slides into a seat with the rest of the group, tipping his hat in welcome. He adds himself to the conversation as if he heard the entire last portion of what they were discussing.

"I've been making some connections, doing research in the occult. Whatever was down there was definitely not par for the course." He looks to the rest of the group. "Anyone do any digging about what it was we actually encountered down there?"

He seems eager with his offer. "I could try to see what The Crone provides me. Clues to help us figure out what to do next." He looks to Dana. "You spend the most time with her, anything else you've noticed? Anything at all?"

Dana shrugs exasperatedly. "Look, I dunno, she's always been kinda quiet. If shit goes wrong with her, she usually tells us to fuck off and spends a week aligning the fuel injector on her hog. And we're fine with that, doesn't hurt no one, makes her a damn good mechanic," she says, nodding at Whiskey. "The difference now is she'll tell us to fuck off and then not do shit about it."

She looks uncomfortable for a few seconds, "Uh, Killjoy... I mean, you've been seeing her a bit, right? Again, she's quiet, but..." she trails off, some subconscious remembrance of Ariadne and the Beach night stopping her from saying more.

"We stopped." He says bluntly. "She was ... offering things I couldn't accept. She has an open invitation to visit me at my church, but when she never showed, I assumed her interests lay elsewhere."

Antoine runs his hands through his hair at Salvador's response. "Maybe that's for the best."

Whiskey groans. "Fuck that. If she had enough of us grounding her to reality, maybe she'd be less moody." He downs a shot, and immediately pours another out of the bottle in his fist. "But naw, we don't need no damn magic. No offense, but not sure what good it would do. What we need, is we need her to know we're here for her, that we're still looking out for her. So... so I invited her here. So she could see that." Whiskey then drinks again.

Antoine clearly tenses up. He seems a bit taken aback. "You... you don't think that might not work well for her? Sure, we're friendly faces, but seeing a whole room of us? Comes off as an intervention. May just piss her off."

Whiskey shrugs. "Hey mister big-shot, I had no ideas. And none of you all offered any other ones. We can change the plan up, but wanted to do something. Better than sitting on my ass failing her, right?"

It's odd to see the big man looking for validation, but he is. Whether or not his plan was a good idea, he seems to think that something needs to be done, and he scans the crowd for a response.

"I trust Primogen Sherman's gut on this one. If he says she needs to know the group is here, then we should at least try." He does glance again at Antoine, allaying his concerns. "So we do make it an intervention. We'll say I called it, and everyone here can do what they need to do - condemn the idea, but support the intent. Hell, you can say I tricked you into showing up. That way if she needs to be mad at someone..." He shrugs. "And who knows, maybe getting angry, experiencing some sort of passion can help her break out of her grief."
