Birth, and the re-entering into the world of an ancestral soul into a new-born’s body has been a much sanctified ritual for centuries. Within the capitol city of the great Empire, every seventeenth noble birth is marked with great celebration and feasting throughout the streets from the palaces of Santara Walk to the huts of the fishing quarter. On this day that the hands of the mighty and rich grasp and support the hands of the lowly and poor, many great things can happen. Charity and benevolence were rife when the lights came out and the streamers flew. Good will and hope accompanied the smell of the pigs roasting on fiery spits, and the sweet hazelnut pastries that were traditionally sold at the great birthings. The birthing itself was to bless the 17th noble born, to bestow gifts of promise and destiny, for the blessed child in each generation would often grow to become great people. They seemed to have greater intellect, strength and wisdom than any other child, it was as if the Gods themselves watched for the 17th, and bestowed abilities upon them to the limit of human capacity. Indeed most all of them went on to become great generals, great fighters, great poets, great artists or great Archmonks, some even were elected to become Emperor. I was to be the 17th child of my generation. As the Gods would have it however, cursed as they are, my fate conspired against me and the rights I deserve. My place is in greatness but my destiny is in ruins. It was the day of the birth of the 16th, the mother was understandably disappointed, but happy nonetheless, that she was the mother of the baby before the 17th. She lay in bed, awaiting the birth of her child. Across the city, in the noble house Haram my mother drowned in excess. Placified by the riches of a thousand worlds. She was also pregnant. She was due in but a few weeks. Lavished by the noble husband she claimed, loved by the people for her impending child, and eaten from inside by the cantankerous and wretched rot that lay dormant within her body. For reasons the might deities have left unclear to me, they chose that moment to unleash the fury of her disease, and lay her low within minutes. Her body grew sallow and deathly, and I had to be pulled from her dirty, weak body before my time. I was no longer the one that would be adored by the people and rise to unprecedented heights. I hate my mother, I hate my people, I hate my Empire. I am the 16th. I will be more. |
