Cloud’s Promise to Tifa
Quote:

A Promise to Tifa, Etched in his Memory.

When Cloud left the village dreaming of being a SOLDIER, he swore to Tifa that he would come running to her rescue if she was in trouble. While it was Tifa who strong-armed him into making the promise, it seems that the idea that he must keep this vow was forever in Cloud’s mind.

Tifa: Hey, why don't we make a promise? Umm, if you get really famous and I'm ever in a bind…… You came save me, all right?

Cloud: What?

Tifa: Whenever I'm in trouble, my hero will come and rescue me. I want to at least experience that once.

Cloud: What?

Tifa: Come on--! Promise me----!

Cloud: All right…… I promise.

How serious was Cloud when he made a promise to Tifa? Let’s find out!

Before the promise:

When they were children, Cloud followed Tifa to the deadly paths of Mt. Nibel when all of her friends had backed out in trying to save her. He failed and they both fell from the bridge. Tifa went comatose for days. This made Cloud angry at his weakness and wanted to be strong like Sephiroth.

AFTER the promise:

1. Cloud joins AVALANCHE at her request.

Quote:

On the request of his childhood friend Tifa, Cloud assists the anti-ShinRa organization “AVALANCHE” led by Barret

Promise on the water tower

The memory of Cloud and Tifa exchanging promises on the water tower 7 years ago has a vital significance when searching for “Cloud’s true self” in the Lifestream. Also, the promise to “come to Tifa’s rescue if she is in trouble” forms the reason for Cloud assisting AVALANCHE in this scene, but he has in fact already fulfilled this promise 5 years ago in the Nibel mako reactor.

2. Cloud dressed up as a woman to “save” Tifa from Don Corneo

"For the sake of helping Tifa, Cloud disguises himself as a woman at Aerith’s suggestion. That in mind, the dialogue options when he’s picked as Corneo’s companion are really amusing."

3. In Crisis Core, Cloud protected Tifa from monsters outside the reactor. He was hurt and had to use Tifa as his human crutch on the way to Nibelheim.

4. Despite the epic mental confusion that Cloud wasn’t in the Nibelheim incident, he was actually there for Tifa and defeated Sephiroth. This scene was featured in four versions: the original, Before Crisis, Last Order (non-canon) and Crisis Core.

5. In the ending of FFVII, Tifa never left Cloud and the ground she was standing on collapsed. Cloud caught her and kept her from falling.

6. A short, two-second scene in the ending has Cloud holding Tifa’s hand to keep her from flying away when the crater exploded.

7.In AC, Cloud was late to protect Tifa from Loz.

8. In ACC, Cloud saves Tifa from being crushed by the debris.

Others:

1. In Ergheiz (non-canon,) you can only fight Tifa if you were able to defeat Cloud under certain conditions. Tifa’s title is “summoner” and Cloud is “guardian.” Go figure. (This may be coincidental but still a nice coincidence!)

2.In Kingdom Hearts II (non FFVII canon,) Cloud fights Sephiroth to protect Tifa.

3. In Dissidia 012 (canon,) Cloud protects Tifa from Sephiroth.

4. Again in Dissidia 012 Cloud fought Chaos alone to end the war for her. He pleads to Cosmos to save her before he dies.

So Cloud was THAT serious XD Note that if you read the kanji (Japanese character) of “promised etched in his memory (胸) ” it’s actually a character for “chest/heart.” The promise is in Cloud’s heart. :)
