I thought I would make a post about the romantic cliches/tropes that surround Cloud and Tifa. I’m not saying this in any way proves that they are canon, they are just things that I have noticed that are common romantic themes in other media. :)

Childhood Friends
Quote:

Childhood Friend Romance is a part of romantic plots, when characters develop romantic feelings for someone who they spent their childhood years with.

Example: Dart and Shana (Legend of Dragoon), Vaan x Penelo (FFXII), Cecil x Rosa (FFIV), Kyrie x Nero (DMC4), Sora and Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)

2. Stars/Shooting Stars

Quote:

Characters in stories always want something; it’s one of the rules of fiction. Some heroes work very hard in pursuit of their dreams, some use wit and charm, but a few look up to the nearest star and make a longing, desperate wish.

It always comes true.

Example: Squall and Rinoa share a moment under the stars and also see a shooting star. Similar to how Cloud and Tifa make a promise under the stars and then a shooting star appears afterwards.

3. Promises

Quote:

A dramatically-made promise that operates like a verbal Chekhov’s Gun. The Promise will eventually be called in — sometimes at the climax and sometimes as the catalyst for a whole arc or series — and the promiser will be required to act.

Example: Sora and Kairi, Squall and Rinoa

Cloud and Tifa make a promise under the stars and Cloud is determined to live up to that promise.

4. Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl

Quote:

The tendency for the brooding, angsty, loner boy to end up with a sweet, gentle girl who will patiently coax him out of his moods.

While the appeal of the brooding boy probably has something to do with All Girls Want Bad Boys, the brooding boy isn’t necessarily bad, he’s just…moody, troubled.

Example: Squall and Rinoa, Kyo and Tohru (Fruits Basket), Female Protag and Shinjiro (Persona 3)

Tifa often supports Cloud when he’s at his worst and as the ability to understand him better than anyone else (official statement). She also pulls Cloud out of his darkness moment when she explores is subconscious mind. She gives him a wake up call in AC.

5. Everyone can see it

Quote:

…Except for them, of course.

This trope happens when two characters are just perfect for each other, but neither realizes it (or only one realizes it). However, everyone around them — such as their friends, family, and enemies — can see their obvious feelings for each other.

Example: Cid comments that Tifa wears the pants in the relationship, the nurse comments on how much Tifa loves Cloud, all party members are aware of Tifa’s love for Cloud, Johnny’s jealousy towards Cloud

6. Leaving You To Find Myself

Quote:

The tale is approaching its finale and you have a character who has undergone many changes. Now you need them to make a bold statement, to show the world that they are a fully developed individual.

discard perfectly good and loving partners for no other reason than that that particular person reminds them of their past.

Example: Cloud leaves Tifa and his family because his past haunts him and he is afraid of losing the happiness he has with them.

7. Smitten Teenage Girl

Quote:

She’s a wholly average girl, with a crazy crush on a guy that makes little to no sense.

This doesn’t mean the girl’s feelings aren’t genuine. After all, she is likely to be both fairly young and extremely naive. Also, this doesn’t necessarily outrule the possibility that her initially shallow, child-like crush may develop into more sincere and deeper feelings

Also, it’s rather common to see that the girl does have reasons beyond “he’s cute” or “he’s cool” (he may have done something really nice for her, in example), but we just didn’t know about their common history, and we’re told about them only later in the story.

Example: Tifa develops a Childhood crush on Cloud (and he has one on her as well) and wants him to save her and be famous. She refers to him as her blonde knight.

Clueless chick magnet: :cloud:

A character who is his own worst enemy when it comes to love. In fact, he's pretty much his only enemy in this arena. Wherever they go, it seems that for some reason they attract some romantic attention, in theory there is no reason why they couldn't go on to be The Casanova with a new person every night.

Interrupted Declaration of love:

Quote:

Alice has been in love with Bob but has been working up the courage to tell him. When she finally does, she manages to get out "I" before something cuts her off...In some cases, the interruptor—especially if it's the target of the declaration—may cut them off with a knowing look or a declaration of their own, making the declaration unnecessary. Such is usually mind-numbingly heartwarming.

:tifa: Interrupted by Fireworks during her date with Cloud. Also in HA scene after her 'words aren't the only way' dialogue Tifa gives Cloud a striking smile.

Home sweet home:

It's time for the Happy Ending: to go, and stay, home. Nice, peaceful, safe home. And do all sorts of quiet things. Maybe settle down with the Love Interest and indulge in Babies Ever After, or just grow some flowers. Definitely stop all this dangerous adventuring stuff. Any attempt at And the Adventure Continues will be rebuffed with We Are Not Going Through That Again

Attempted by Cloud and Tifa post FF7 and in COT. After AC returns home to his family.
