Ok, my father is harsh, but respectable. His father, Okashi, was extremely harsh on him, but not his sisters (two sisters, both of whom married in to other Houses and produced Dragon-Blooded offspring). As the sole failure and only one capable of continuing to bear the Okashi family name, Paal was always pushed extremely hard to succeed. On Paal's tenth birthday, Okashi moved his family to Clover Town, forty years ago, in shame. Okashi, his father before him, and his father before him all failed to Exalt, even after 'donating' large sums of money in an attempt to fortify the Dragons-blood in their veins. Okashi continued this tradition on Paal's thirtieth birthday, knowing it was the family's last chance to redeem themselves. She stayed in Clover-Town for a year, and then left, leaving Mnemon Okashi on the verge of financial ruin...and a child, christened Mnemon Okashi Rael. Paal was kept to the highest standards growing up, as any dereliction of conduct was met with strict punishment. In his teens, Paal attempted to gain the dragon's favor by studying the Thousand Correct Action of the Upright Soldier, and took it's teachings to heart. Though it seemingly did not grant him the boon he was searching for, it did color his actions and outlook on life from then since. Paal is a strict man that lives by the Thousand Correct Actions. He is also harsh, like his father, though kind. To those who constantly laze about, he praises every single act in which they succeed by extremely large amounts and is lenient on their minor transgressions, and to those that regularly excel above expectations, he levies extreme punishments for every case they even slightly misstep, and forgoes praise for those minor achievements. However, he greatly praises truly great acts, and extremely punishes extreme derelictions of duty. Likewise, he commends anyone who proceeds as expected, for he believes those attempting to shine and be brighter than others are in folly. A true soldier. (to note, the praise and punishment is believed to be a reverse-psychology that will instill proper conduct in Soldiers. By praising slackers for every achievement by stupid amounts, it shames them.)
