Vegetarianism

I was just thinking about this today, is anyone here in the Commonwealth vegetarian or a former vegetarian?

I once was for a year and a half until just a few months ago. I became one in the first place because I thought it was better for the environment and I didn't want to be responsible for the deaths of any animals.

I didn't end up sticking with it though, for a few reasons. Meat has a lot more protein in it as well as being the only source of vitamin B12, so I thought that it is probably best not to cut it out of my diet completely. I also changed my views on the morality of eating meat. I still care a LOT about animal rights, but I decided that it is completely natural for animals to eat other animals. I am against the excessive cruelty in the meat business though, factory farming is just evil and unhealthy for us. I do my best to eat organic meat as much as possible for that reason.

What are your views on the matter, fellow citizens?

To be honest I've never had an issue with protein. A lack of fat is the thing I had difficulty with, but as I learnt about foods better it has stopped being to much of an issue. B12 is in most cereals luckily, as well as good multi-vitamins, which are a good idea for everyone, whether vegetarian or not, due to the low nutritional value of much of modern foods.

Unfortunately, Organic and free-range meat, while of course being much better than factory farming, have issues. Often they aren't as free-range as the consumer is lead to believe (in some countries, many so called free rage animals actually aren't much better off than battery, but are fed fresh grass and so can be called free range). But even when it is accurate and completely free range, there isn't enough room on the planet for everyone to eat organic/free range. So while it may be a good choice for the ethical consumer, it isn't a long term solution for us as a people.

There are two other reasons I don't eat it which I find more important than the issue of animal rights though, human starvation and the environment. We spend so much land growing crops to feed animals, far much more than if people just ate crops in the first place. It is also one of the biggest killers of our environment.

Even if I was to be convinced that eating meat isn't so bad though, I wouldn't be able to start eating it. I've spent so long vegetarian that it repulses me :p

Ironicness
I became a vegetarian last year and have stuck with it since. It's a bit hard in some areas, but I've been able to cope and live with it. Protein has been a bit of a problem for me, I suspect, but I try my best and get lots of enrichment from a certain wonderful cook.

I ain't a vegetarian, Meat Lover all the way.

I have never really thought about being a vegetarian before and I probably won't fully think about as I love to eat meat. My favourite is bacon and I love to cook it as well. One thing I missed doing before leave was cooking my own food.

I'm a pescetarian (vegetarian+fish) so I get protein from fish ;) But I would suggest quinoa and couscous if you want something that is protein packed. Plus they're really good :D
