Spoiler: click to toggle A few years ago… It has been six years since the "Collapse," The terrorist attack that brought down the democratic government of the Lemurian Islands. In the capital, Caeruleo city, several government buildings had been bombed, including the Presidential Palace, the Capitol building and the Treasury building. The President and most of the Senate had been killed in the blasts and the country was left effectively leaderless. The economy quickly collapsed and the country was plunged into chaos. The absence of a fully functioning central government meant that the public service shut down, grinding the economy to a halt. Crime rates soared up, a long food shortage occurred and small scale isolated terrorist acts continued. The surviving senators had convened and appointed the reactionary politician, Romulus Thorne, to fill the role of Commander-in-Chief of the new provisional government. Thorne promised to restore order to Lemurian Islands and to hunt down and destroy the Soldiers of Truth, who he claimed were behind the attack. Over a period of a year, the Commander-in-Chief was able to restore some order with the help of the Mestran armed forces. The panicked population welcomed the return to relative stability that he brought. Since then he has not given up his position, and continues to consolidate his power. Life under Thorne’s reign With the constitution figuratively and literally burned, Thorne had near unlimited power. Since coming into power, Thorne dedicated most of the state’s resources to building a military and a police force “for stability.” Under this pretext, his rule also saw the erosion of civil liberties and the creation of a secret police agency, the LISS (Lemurian Islands State Security). The organization concerns itself with gathering intelligence and ruthlessly beating and detaining without trial suspected “enemies of the state”. The true extent of the activities of the LISS is veiled in secrecy, yet many intuitively hate and fear the organization while some swallow the propaganda and welcome the “security” it offers them. Lemurian Islands was a traditionally progressive nation, and such conduct by the state would be considered absolutely unacceptable, but in such a period of distress and uncertainty the citizens’ rationality was tested. Unbeknownst to the majority of Lemurians, the LISS kept files on the most politically active citizens, and if they were seen as a threat (i.e. were loud about their dislike for Thorne’s regime), they would be arrested under false pretexts and sent to a prison camp. As per the Commander-in-Chief’s orders, various remote prison camps were constructed for criminals and for political prisoners. In these camps, prisoners were forced to manufacture weapon components for the military. As far as the public was informed, the camps were for “enemies of the state” who had performed terrible crimes and were fully deserving of their sentence. The government also understated the amount of prisoners in these camps. Before the collapse of the former government, the Lemurian Islands had been a socialist country. This was no longer the case. Thorne’s provisional government spent the majority of the budget on the military, law and order and corporate subsidies. Public healthcare, education, the environment and social welfare, which were once budget priorities were now sidelined or completely eliminated. Thorne encouraged corporations to move to Lemurian Islands with his subsidies and lower taxes. He also removed regulations, such as minimum wage laws, health and safety laws and environmental regulations. This caused the economy to rapidly expand and the GDP grew considerably, but the benefits were very unevenly distributed. For the first time since the socialist revolution over 70 years prior, social stratification began to reemerge. While the new rich and to a lesser extent, the middle class benefitted, the working class was marginalized. Since coming to power, Thorne set about creating an elaborate propaganda network. Major news networks were either owned by the state or by Thorne-friendly corporations. Pirate radio stations occasionally popped up, attempting to undermine Thorne’s control, but they would be swiftly dealt with by the LISS. The propaganda stations tried to keep the public distracted from the nation’s problems by encouraging consumerism with a heavy advertising industry. Thorne was presented as a hero who’s military and law and order policies were defeating the Soldiers of Truth. He was also praised for throwing off the “shackles of the weak and inefficient socialist state” and for dramatically expanding the economy and the nation’s military might. Outside the Lemurian Islands, government propaganda managed to create the image of a nation going through some trouble with terrorists, but gave the international community the impression of the nation being relatively stable. Thorne was portrayed as a pragmatic and levelheaded leader. The nation’s newfound economic prosperity was boasted about, but corruption and human rights abuses were successfully covered up. Thorne announces the Empire Last week, Commander-in-Chief Thorne appeared before an audience of several hundred thousand congregated in the People’s Plaza right outside the Presidential Palace (which had been rebuilt after being bombed six years ago.) Millions more would be watching on TV throughout the Lemurian Islands, and perhaps beyond. Thorne stood before everyone on the podium and began his speech. He reminded everyone of the past weakness of the nation before his reign, and the ease at which the Soldiers of Truth had caused the country to collapse. He then proceeded to state how things had improved under his leadership and how the country was now an economic and military superpower, and would soon be the undisputed greatest in the world. He then announced that the last of the “Soldiers of Truth” had been exterminated, and that the future of the Lemurian Islands looked bright. To maintain stability, and to lead the nation into a golden age, it would need an Emperor for the new Lemurian Empire. And that would be him. Even in the crowd of loyal supporters gathered in front of him, there were mixed reactions. Some were disquieted, the last emperor was the tyrant Tarquin III, who had been overthrown in the socialist revolution 70 years ago. However other members in the audience were caught up in the nationalistic fervor and applauded wildly. Today The Empire of Lemurian Islands declared dominion of the Western seas of the Atlantean Region. They have announced that any ship passing through these seas is subject to Lemurian laws, and will need to pay taxes. The Navy has already captured 5 commercial freight ships from the United Trade Federation demanding that they pay up. The Lemurian Navy have also occupied the Atlantis Isles to have better control over the trade routes that pass through there. This is in breech on international law however as it is classified as common heritage to Atlantis. As well as this, it was revealed that the Lemurian Islands had a secret mining operation in the Antarctic in a conservation zone, which is also illegal. Federation City - United Trade Federation Capitol Capitol Building ![]() "We must act rationally and diplomatically when we are handling this situation." The Councilor from Castilis said in a near hushed tone. "Act rationally?!," the Mestran Councilor began, "Not only has this so called Lemurian Empire broken dozens of regional laws protecting the Atlantian Isles, but they have the nerve to capture and detain not one but five UTF cargo liners. This cannot go unanswered." "Calm down, Yanis." Markus Salrio sat calmly and spoke in an even voice. Markus was the Viceroy of the United Trade Federation, and he was Mestran born he was for all purposes Yanis' better in many regards. "Darius is correct, we must act rationally and in good time our ships will be returned. It is wise to continue trade sanctions against the Lemurian Empire, and push our allies to support the sanctions. Perhaps when their economy begins faltering they will behave appropriately." "Do you honestly think that will stop them?" "I do not know what will happen Yanis, but if your so dead set against them paying then perhaps..." Markus paused. Leaning forward he pushed a light project button on the table top. A holographic three sided view screen appeared above the center of the circular Table. A woman in her late 30s appeared before the Council. Her name was Alexis Drake, Fleet Admiral of the United Federal Forces and head of the Security Council. "Viceroy, How may I assist you?" She spoke planly but with force, she was to be feared. "Admiral... I have a task for you. I wanted a perimeter blockade established. I don't want a single Lemurian ship to enter the Eastern Sphere of Atlantis." "Yes, Viceroy. It shall be done." "And Admiral there is one more thing. All trade ships are to be escorted by two UFF destroyers." "Very good, sir. I will notify you when the blockade is established." The screens dissipated. Markus put his fingers together as he leaned back in his chair. When he finally spoke his voice was full of authority, "Now it is the Lemurian's turn to play. If they move against our military or our ships again, then we will have no choice but to retaliate." The Councilors nodded in agreement. The UTF was on the defensive, but for how long would they remain there before they were forced to make a move. A move on the offensive that would result in a war in the Western half of Atlantis? What would be the end result, and how would the region fair from yet another war. The gears of war were turning. The largest consolidated and centralized military in Atlantis was preparing for what would come. How would the fates be decided. The doom of war was soon at hand. The long night was coming. Romankis turned on the big screen and the Imperator's face beamed across the room, he didn't speak, eyeing the Principle-Senator closely. Romankis thought to himself how Kretheus did this every time. It certainly made him feel uncomfortable. He coughed slightly and spoke hesitantly, "Imperator, I thin...." "Principle-Senator. You already know the answer to your question," Kretheus cut in with a half smile. "Yes Imperator, very well. Perhaps, then, we should simply publicly denounce their actions and meet with Mestran officials prior to making any decisions here. After all, these measures will affect all of Eastern Atlantis." The Imperator rolled his eyes slightly, "Nikos. The world already knows our thoughts and are already sure of our utter disgust at the actions of the nation we thought of as a close ally. You yourself have campaigned for the protection of our military machine despite the austerity required to keep it during the economic crisis, successfully i might add. Of course, we must ensure that we make decisions with Mestra on the general integrity of the East but there is no need to dilly-dally in our response to this menace." Romankis was tired of Kretheus' somewhat cryptic responses, "uuuh. So you want us to take some action against them?" "Mr Principle-Senator. You are the Commander-in-Chief of our Defence Forces and the Leader of the Senate which vowed to protect the Atlantis Isles. Tell me, what should our reaction to the announcement that these Islands have been occupied by an aggressive egomaniac be?" "But....uh...you support conflict in the Atlantis Isles?" "What? No. Your not making any sense man." Romankis scratched his head. He could not help but admire something in Kretheus. In many ways, when speaking with him, Romankis was reminded of the Late Lemming Sage. Still, in these situation, it was terribly annoying. "So..... err.... What should we do, exactly?" Kretheus sighed. "I've already told you man. We have the most powerful military in the region. While I may wish it was a fraction as powerful as it is, it isn't, so we may as well use it. Get that rabble out of those Islands and make sure they never return." With that, Kretheus' face disappeared from the screen, replaced by the Secretary of Defence. "Your orders sir?" Romankis looked blankly at his Secretary for some moments before finally replying, "Give me a minute." Edited by Lemmingtopias, Jan 25 2013, 02:41 AM.

Atlantis Isles - Off the coast of Analis (largest of the islands) The soldiers of the Lemurian Islands were restless. They couldn't figure why they had been dragged to occupy the islands of Atlantis. Their were rumors that they were searching for something in the islands. Lost technology of Atlantis? Perhaps they thought the legends of how Atlantis dominated the landscape as a technologically advanced civilization were true. However fears were growing on whether the other nations in the region would take notice. In the distance a small black object appeared. The look out guards paid little attention to it until it grew larger on the horizon. Soon two more objects and then four more objects appeared around the first black object. The soldiers were now alert. On the other side of the island, soldiers were greeted by an unwelcome site. Around the edge of the nearest island came three UTF destroyers, around and island 30 degrees to the left of the first group more UTF battle destroyers appeared. The island was on full alert. Within in an hour five UTF battle groups were situated around the island of Analis. Across the entire Isles the UTF had blockaded islands and the island chain. -That Night- In the dead of night, and with the moon hidden behind thick clouds, the assault began. UTF troops aboard amphibious landing craft, landed on the shore. Overhead, marines parachuted into the islands core. Across the remainder of the islands similar tactics were being done. The Lemurian troops didn't know what hit them. As the battle raged, more UTF troops were dropped off in dropships. The reclaiming of the Atlantian Isles was underway. |

Why the Mestrans were launching an attack on the Atlantis Isles, the Communications Officer aboard the HHS Trident II did not know, but she and her team were quite happy to sit back and watch the show. At least until she got the inevitable call from the higher ups ordering the Trident II to go in and break up the fight. The rest of the crew calmly made their preparations for the Peace Keeping Mission, though there was certainly some wariness mounting. Would a Lemmingtopian Ground Force really be sent onto these sacred Isles? Would they be just as bad as the Lemurians and the Mestrans if they did take arms on the islands? How had the region deteriorated so far that Lemmingtopian Troops would be forced to knock two of their allies heads together, as it were? Edited by Lemmingtopias, Jan 25 2013, 04:34 AM.

In the war room Thorne clenched his fists as he looked over the map of Atlantis. He had just received the reports of the UTF military attempting to remove the Lemurian military's occupation of the islands. Although he thought a quick retaliation from the Mestrans was possible, he thought it would have been unlikely, at this stage anyway. He thought that they would have tried to take the moral high-ground and not send troops onto the island, just as the Lemmingtopians seemed to be doing. Nevertheless he would not give up yet, he would instruct his troops to try to hold their ground. Unknown to the rest of the region, Thorne had ordered the construction of advanced submarines, which were now stationed close to the Atlantis Isles, hidden in the depths. On his orders they would attack the Mestrans from behind. Although this would not be enough to destroy the Mestran fleet, it would take them by surprise and at least slow their liberation attempt. "Instruct the admiral to launch the submarine attack on the Mestran destroyers. We will show them that we are a force to be reckoned with." "Yes sir-I mean your majesty" replied Commander Romero. Romero was Thorne's chief military advisor, who had been a top civil servant back in the days of the old republic and promoted due to his efficiency and strategic mind. In truth Romero had reservations about Thorne's declaration of the empire and his military campaign. Declaring himself an emperor has already proven to be unpopular with the citizens. Invading the Atlantis Isles had also been a tactical blunder, causing the navy to be stretched thin, leaving the Islands more vulnerable to attack from the more powerful nations of Lemmingtopias and Mestra, for example. Even if the war could be won, the Atlantis Islands provided practically no economic benefit to the empire. If he were in charge he would have waited many more years to build the military further, and tried to gain more allies before exerting force in Atlantis. This pragmatic approach had absolutely no place in Emperor Thorne's vision though. Edited by Lemurian Islands, Jan 26 2013, 02:56 AM.

OOC: Making up some names and statuses of Lemurians. Hope you don't mind, and I'll edit if you do. IC Roman Hunter stormed through the doors of the Lenton National Forum Theater, where the Deputy Ambassador from Lemurian Islands was due to make a speech about Lemuria's military cooperation with New Sorvun. The Lenton was a publicly funded assembly hall commonly used by the national government to give foreign dignitaries a place to speak to the general public. In the way of its largest function, the production entrances were sprinkled with city police for guests' protection, but a flash of a badge from the International Advisory Task Force, where Hunter worked as a military advisor, would get past that in an instant. Hunter had been sitting in a café across from the Lenton when the news had popped up. Empire, Military Emperor, Blockade, Lemmingtopian Interference, and suddenly he knew crystal clear the only reason the Deputy Ambassador was there was to offset the blame and distract the nation. This was the type of thing you learned in a military-foreign advisory career. Things happen quickly. If you don't deal with them quickly, they go off. And he had been sitting across the street from something that he could deal with. This had needed to happen, and that's why he was striding through the production area of the Lenton National Forum Theater. The Deputy Ambassador, who was known to most as Joey, was looking over his notes when he received a tap on his shoulder. "Go ahead," mouthed the stage manager. Joey was halfway out of the curtain when the glass broke in one of the opaque windows cutting the lobby from the hall. It had been a man in a grey suit, running down the aisle. People screamed. Police officers lounging at the back rushed forward, meaning to tackle him. Roman leaped onstage and grabbed the Deputy Ambassador's shoulder, taking a gun out of his jacket and putting it to his head. The police, running forward, stopped short. Hunter announced slowly, "I am an agent from the International Advisory Task Force. We have just received a transmission that the Lemurian Islands are attacking the Atlantis Isles and mean to gradually invade Atlantis." Hunter didn't know this to be true, but it sounded good. "This man is a terrorist meaning to distract us from the attacks. He may have been coordinating an attack in this very theater." Panic ensued. A riot started in the seats, leaving many trampled or thrown. A rush for the exits was attempted to be blocked by police, but they were overrun by the crowd. Someone tripped Hunter and he threw out his hands for the fall, letting the gun drop to the- was that a gunshot? Didn't matter. He crawled backstage and made his way out of the theater. Prime Minister Bowron was sitting in his office, chatting with a few foreign policy experts when the red phone rang. He froze. The red phone was for emergencies. He picked it up. "Bowron." "Prime Minister," his Media Director responded. "the Lemurian Islands have invaded the Atlantis Isles, right when their ambassador was speaking in Lenton. Apparently, he was shot by an IAT agent, who is also missing. We need you in Press right now to calm the whole country down." |

The Emperor's office Emperor Thorne was writing a new edict at his desk when the door was knocked. "Come in" In came Fabio Mathentis, the director of the Lemurian Islands State Security. "What is it" Thorne enquired "One of our diplomats, a "Joey" has been shot in Ironicness" Thorne seemed mildly annoyed "Under normal circumstances I would demand retribution, but this is currently the least of our worries. Is there anything else?" "Yes, the terrorist groups we have been liaising with have managed to destablise several governments across the region. Ellani, Marshonia, Kurosania, Banackiean have all been struck, and distracted from our imperial expansion. Unfortunately the assassination attempt on the Lemmingtopian Imperator failed" Thorne glared. "In future I will expect better results" "Yes your majesty" "Is that all?" "We have received reports that the rebels have been gaining support in the northern provinces. Military bases are still under constant attack by rebels. It is becoming harder to keep this revolt quiet" "Well then, deal with them! As I said I expect results when I make a demand! Remember, you are replaceable. Now get out of my sight." Director Mathentis bowed. "As you command, your majesty." |

UTF forces continued to hammer away at the Lemurian forces stationed on the Atlantis Isles, though the military campaign was rough. UFF forces had been ordered to minimize the damage to the island and limit casualties regardless of enemies. The UFF forces had been equipped with the latest concussive technology, and a traditional side arm. Off the Eastern coast of the Lemurian Islands Mere hours after the attack on Lemurian Forces in the Atlantis Isles, the UFF Helios carrier was making landfall. As the flying aircraft carrier made its way over the largest island to the east, bombers and screachers (fighters equpped with sonic weapons) had destroyed all major defense capabilities for the island. Stage one of the attack was underway. Sieze a beach head. |

The Resistance Movement Throughout the Lemurian Islands, a whisper of discontent is heard. Citizens are afraid to speak too loudly lest they become the target of the secret police. But since declaring himself emperor, Thorne lost all legitimacy in the eyes of most citizens. There was no longer even any pretense that the nation was still democratic. Despite his unpopularity, he was still firmly in power thanks to the Lemurian Islands State Security agency that successfully crushed any dissent. The exception to the empire's domination however, was in some of the northern provinces on the periphery of the country. Here, the secret police had a tough time infiltrating the tightly knit social circles of this mountainous, forested and relatively sparsely populated area. Here is where the resistance movement was at its strongest. One of the clear leaders of this movement was Christina Rivera. Rivera had been a senator before the collapse of the old government and the rise of Thorne to power. She frequently criticized Thorne in his early years as Commander-in-Chief. She was forced to escape when it became clear that she was in danger of being assassinated or brought to a prison camp. She escaped to the Borras Mountain range where the rebellion was strong. She became the voice of freedom on a radio station set up by the rebels that exposed the corruption of the regime and encouraged citizens to take action against Thorne. Meanwhile, another important figure in the rebellion was Micheál O'Ceallachan. O'Ceallachan was a former police officer, who was sent to a prison camp for speaking out against Thorne. With a bunch of other political prisoners, he escaped and set up the LIRA, the Lemurian Islands republican army. The LIRA organized strategic attacks on the regime. They ambushed soldiers, taking their weapons and even attacked military bases occasionally. This group was labelled "terrorists" by the government. Edited by Lemurian Islands, Jan 26 2013, 04:32 AM.

Above the Island of Eumelus, attack helicopters whirred above the sandy beaches, waiting for orders from the Trident II. Ampheres Island had already received two squads of the Sacred Band, one of Lemmingtopias' elite regiments, whom had taken cover in a small forest. They boys on the ground were safe in the knowledge that ten times their number were ready to land on the island with just five minutes notice. In Euaimon Island, the Marines had already occupied the beach, their communications team in constant relay with the Trident II. Paratroopers were already in flight, in case of the need to land on the Mneseos and Mestor Islands to assist the Marines in their deployment should such an order be made. On Autochthon Island, the elite naval commando unit had landed to stake a safe spot for a ground entry and the Elasippos, Azaes and Diaprepres Islands would be entered by forces within minutes of the order. The island of Atlas itself would be more difficult to enter without hostilities but tactical officers were scanning all the data coming in to formulate the best strategy. On the Trident II, the Admiral walked into the Comms Room, waiving off the Officers whom stood to salute. "Are we ready?" He asked in the General Direction of the Communications Chief. "All units in place as ordered Sir" The Admiral picked up a receiver and as he spoke into it green flares lit up the night sky from all directions, he spoke an almost identical message twice, first to the Lemurians and then to the UTF. "This is Captain Angelos on the Trident II, flagship of the Lemmingtopian Fleet 'Poseidon's Wrath'. You are within an heritage site and protected waters.. We kindly request that you cease hostilities immediately." Lomapolis, Lemmingtopias "Imperator," said Romankis as he stormed into the Office without even knocking, a decision must be made right away. "Nikos.... Will you please knock? What if I had a lady in here?" "Ugh...apologies. errrr... A decision must be made right away." "On what?" "The situation on the Atlantis Isles, of course." "Ah yes, that again. Hmmm. What were the options?" Romankis face went bright red, was Kretheus teasing him? "Imperator, either we proceed with the peace-keeping operation, leave the Mestrans and Lemurians to fight it out and then pick up the pieces, or enter the fray on the side of Mestra." "I think you have left one out." " I do not believe so Sir." "Of course. The other option is to ignore this game of bigger sticks without showing off our branch." The red on Romankis face seemed to grown redder. "Imperator...." But Kretheus couldn't be bothered to wait for Romankis' disapproving words, "peace-keeping seems to always involve splitting the two sides up. I really don't think we need to treat our brothers and sisters in the Lemurian Islands and the Federation like children who are crying over spilt milk. The situation is much more serious than that. Nor do I particularly see the point in waging war in the Atlantis Isles when the Federation seems quite able to do it themselves. And to do so would abandon our message of peace there. Set up the encampments, establish our presence and defend from aggression if necessary, but lets not spill blood on what the majority of Lemmingtopians consider holy ground unnecessarily. Now if you would excuse me, I await a diplomat from the freedom fighters in Lemurian Islands." Romankis just said "Imperator" before turning and leaving the room. Kretheus would now wait, again, for the rebel diplomat to enter the room. After a few moments the doors opened.... Edited by Lemmingtopias, Jan 26 2013, 09:49 PM.

Nugent stepped into the office. There was Kretheus waiting patiently behind his desk. "Greetings, Imperator" Nugent said. "Good evening, why don't you take a seat," Kretheus replied. Nugent took his seat seat and then began to explain the situation in the Lemurian Islands. He told Kretheus of life under Thorne's reign of terror, including the secret police, the banning of demonstrations and free speech, and of the prison camps (Nugent had been imprisoned in one, but had escaped with O'Ceallachan, who was now the leader of the Lemurian Islands Republican Army). Nugent also told Kretheus of the resistance and their growing strength and support with the citizenry. Nugent then presented a briefcase full of documents to the Imperator. "Some of our informants working in Thorne's intelligence service have leaked these documents to us in the resistance. It seems that the current terrorist groups attacking different nations in Atlantis are either under the direct command of Thorne, or are being aided by him with funding, weapons and training. The evidence isn't conclusive, but it seems that the attempt on your life has been planned by him too." There was a slight pause. "Thorne is clearly a menace to Lemurian Islands and to everyone else. It is of the opinion of the Resistance that your condemnation of Thorne's seizure of the Atlantis Isles was most appropriate. But we would request that you go further, we would much appreciate it if you publicly exposed Thorne's abuses of power within the Lemurian Islands itself and voiced support for the Resistance. Our nations have always been close allies, and the citizens of the Lemurian Islands would definitely take what you say onboard. The resistance would also be open to receiving supplies from Lemmingtopias, if you have any to spare." "I realize that you must be terribly busy right now Imperator Kretheus. On behalf of the resistance, and of myself, thank you very much for granting me this audience with you." |

Kretheus listened to Nugent speak intently and he filled with sorrow as he heard of the terror in Lemurian Islands from someone actually experiencing it. "My dear friend, the details of your plight has moved me and you are a welcome face in Lemmingtopias. Your courage overwhelms me and I commend the resilience and commitment by your movement in Lemurian Islands. It shall be seen to that you have every comfort you desire while staying in our country and you will not go home empty handed. The supplies you require, both of an humanitarian nature as well as military supplies will be met. Should you require Defence Forces to assist in your liberation efforts, this can be arranged with the Senate and post-conflict humanitarian workers can be arranged and supported if required. Furthermore, if you feel in a position to take the responsibility, Lemmingtopias will officially recognise your movement as the legitimate provisional government of Lemurian Islands and I will prepare to make public broadcasts across Lemmingtopias as well as making similar statements across the region, in my role as World Assembly Delegate, to condemn Thorne and his regime and to call for action in support of your liberation." |

The Lemmingtopian Imperator's office "Thank you very much for your kind words. The helping hand that you are prepared to give to the Lemurian Islands will be greatly appreciated and we shall be in your debt. The aid that you offer us shall be key in restoring democracy and freedom in my homeland. The Resistant movement led by president Rivera would also certainly be prepared to be recognized as the legitimate provisional government of the Lemurian Islands. Again, thank you for everything Imperator. Your support is invaluable" said Nugent. Caeruleo, Lemurian Islands Emperor Romulus Thorne had decided to throw an elaborate coronation for himself while the rest of the nation suffered through the misery of wartime rations. The coronation would involve him being crowned by the Arch Bishop at the Cerulean Cathedral (he had instated Catholicism as the state religion), and then a procession would escort him in marching across the Imperial Plaza (formerly the People's Plaza), ending at the Imperial Palace (formerly the Presidential Palace). His coronation by the Arch-Bishop went as planned, the short, elderly bishop struggled to lift the heavy gold and jewel encrusted crown and place it on Romulus Thorne's head. When that was over with, Thorne strode arrogantly down the aisle with his long luxurious ermine cape trailing behind him. The procession then escorted him out of the Cathedral as planned, and began its march. All of a sudden, a rock hit Thorne at the back of his neck. Caught off guard he stumbled and the crown fell to the ground making a loud clang as it hit the Cobbled road. For a moment everything was silent. One student in the crowd exclaimed "Down with the Emperor!" Others began to join in, and the mob began to close in on Thorne. In his rage, he ordered his guards to "shoot the traitors!" His guards started shooting indiscriminately at the crowd which only became more outraged. Later the tanks were rolled out onto the Plaza to break up the mob that had formed that was chanting "Down with the Thorne." The military and police began to clamp down heavily across the nation. Anything that resembled the beginnings of a demonstration was broken up. At this point the brutality of Thorne's regime was blatantly obvious after this televised event. That night, recruitment for the Lemurian Islands Republican Army soared. |
