Secretary-General Elections Heat Up
With Battlion no longer in the race, Likako A. Nehio and Mestra are the last two contenders. Who will be the next Secretary-General? Voice your opinion in the poll below!
 Mestra- Triumvir of Atlantis, SDC
Interview:
Spoiler: click to toggle 1) What experience in Atlantis' or the Commonwealth's government do you think best prepares you for Secretary General?
I have been a member of Atlantis since late 2010, and since that time I have been involved in every government the region has had. From a Council to a small senate, I have seen Atlantis' government grow and decline. My major experience within my own region was helping to found the current government system, our Triumvirate. My experiences in forming a government and fine tuning it have helped me to greatly understand what a system needs to work properly. I believe this experience will aid me greatly if I am elected as Secretary-General.
As to my experience within the Commonwealth itself, I am one of the founding members of the Commonwealth and am one of the primary draft writers for our Charter as it is in its current form. My ability to lead during the charter drafting accelerated the Charter drafting process exponentially, and we had a full document ready in a matter of a week and a half. I lead the charge for compromise and was unwavering in my defense of regional rights and the security of each region and the Commonwealth. I am currently serving as a regional senator to the Commonwealth Senate which gives me a great understanding to how the Senate operates. Having voted in favor of the Senate Procedures I am fully aware of how the Senate functions and how matters need to be handled and resolved. Both my past experience and my current duties give me an excellent and solid foundation for the office of Secretary-General.
2) Why did you join Atlantis?
I joined Atlantis, because I wanted a home. I wanted some place I could feel like I mattered. A place where no nation no matter how small or big could have their voices heard, the same ideals that I have continued to push for and uphold to this current day. Plus Atlantis is a representation of the ancient and powerful city state from ancient history. Who wouldn't want to join?
3) What is your greatest strength? Weakness?
My greatest strength is compromise. I am willing to compromise for the greater good. To work with my political enemies if you will, to push past our differences and to find common ground. It is this strength that helped lead to the creation of this Commonwealth, and it is this compromise that has helped us forge a Commonwealth that today stands as a grand testament to what we hope to achieve.
As to my weakness... It is always hard to find fault in oneself but I will admit that I am over trusting of people. That may not seem like a bad thing, but it can lead to some issues. However I have learned to take this weakness and twist it to my advantage. I utilize my trust in others to see the fault in not only myself but in those that would try to do us wrong. Utilizing my weaknesses and my strengths I have become not only a better person but a strong and capable leader.
4) What do you hope to accomplish as Secretary General?
As Secretary-General I would continue the work done by Lemmingtopias to continue developing and strengthening the Commonwealth. However I do not believe that we can continue to expand the Commonwealth, but rather we need to focus on our own internal issues. The recent amendment proposals revolving around the procedures for the Security Council have left us vulnerable and have shown that we are not as solid internally as we would like to be. It is this that I wish to address and fix. I would push for reform of those systems and articles of the Charter that hinder our ability to cooperate in a civilized fashion, but insuring regional sovereignty is maintained.
It is my goal to establish Departments under the Executive branch of our governmet. Departments that will compliment the regions and the Commonwealth government to bring about the true purpose and ideals of this inter-regional alliance, A Community. I will always push for community efforts, and I believe that my work on the Commonwealth Football Federation is a strong foundation to forming the true close-knit community that we deserve and desire.
5) What type of people do you enjoy working with the most?
I enjoy working with all kinds of people. I believe that through variety we gain ingenuity, accomplishment, and progress. As our motto proudly states Peragranti Unitas, progress through unity. I enjoy working with people who are willing to take a stand for their beliefs, people who are willing to share new ideas and experiences. It is these people and people and general that will ensure that this Commonwealth is successful and continues to grow and prosper. I will also admit that I enjoy working with my political rivals. Debating and comprising with those you oppose brings about a greater change than either could accomplish alone.
6) Do you believe you have any quality that separates you from the competition?
That is hard to say. I don't feel different from my competitors. Each have their own unique qualities but both are just ordinary people like myself. We have our differences, strengths and weakness, and our own opinions on how we want to lead the Commonwealth. If I had to pick a quality I would say that I do not desire to lead this Commonwealth alone, but rather to work alongside all my fellow colleagues, my competition as you say, and the general population. The quality that I believe I possess is my desire to learn and understand and to work cooperatively with my fellow citizens to better the Commonwealth.
7) Finally, what delectable treats will you shower us with to *assist* in our voting process?
hmm...*assist* a very political word. I believe that a nice import of Mestran Toffee Rum would be good, as well as Atlantian Spiced Rum. And my personal favorite garlic infused shrimp caught from the central seas of Atlantis. A meal fit for a king.

Interview:
Spoiler: click to toggle 1) What experience in New Sorvun's or the Commonwealth's government do you believe prepares you to be Secretary General?
In New Sorvun, I have held every single available position at least once in the First Republic, so I have experience in every aspect of governance from writing legislation as a legislator, negotiated treaties as a Head of State, rendered decisions as a Chief Justice, and maintained the region as Head of Government. In the current Second Republic of New Sorvun, I had to essentially start from scratch to rebuild the region of New Sorvun, and with the help of a few dedicated citizens we managed to bring the spark of life back into New Sorvun. While in the Second Republic, I was the first Charter Committee Member representing New Sorvun, and I worked hard for regional rights and fairness in the Charter.
2) Why did you join New Sorvun?
I and a few others split off from the original region, Sorvun, because our founder and root admin became tyrannical and closed our original home and kicked us to the curb. We have been striving to create a region of democracy, diplomacy, and peace ever since.
3) What is your greatest strength? Weakness?
Strength: I consider myself one of the Great Compromisers in our little area of Nationstates. I strive to bring opposing sides together in the name of progress so that the region, or inter-regional organization, can continue to thrive and grow. Weakness: Ironically, sometimes I can be quite stubborn at times, especially when my own ideas are "coming under attack", but lately, especially since the forming of the Second Republic of New Sorvun, I am learning to maintain a level of pragmatism so I become a better leader and example for my region.
4) What type of people do you enjoy working with the most?
I like working with people who are willing to put forth ideas, but also a person who will follow through on their duties, promises, and the same ideas that they presented instead of relying on others to do everything.
5) What do you hope to accomplish as secretary general?
We need to stabilize the CoR. No doubt about it. Get the GA and Senate set-up with the appropriate procedures, officers, and mechanisms that they need in place, so nothing except for neglect will stand in the way of business. Modify the structure of the Security Council so we have effective management of our forums while minimalizing the risk to member regions as much as possible. Open Door Policy: I don't like keeping people in the dark unless I have to, and should I be the next S-G, I will strive to keep my administration as open as possible to the public. Mediator: As we already can see, there will be inevitable tensions that may arise between member regions, and in those cases the S-G must strive to resolve the issues between them to instill continued friendship in the Commonwealth, and I understand as S-G that there is a possibility that I might have to stand up to my own region, that is necessary in order to be a good and responsible leader in my book. If someone is not willing to do that, then they should not be S-G.
6) Do you believe you have any specific quality that separates you from the competition?[/b}
Dedication: I have been dedicated to the CoR project from the beginning, and I kept pushing to see the CoR stabilize in this current term, even though it seems like I'm talking to myself at times. Barring any unforeseen circumstance, I will be active every day unlike our current S-G, so that I can fulfill my duties, deal with issues, and work on making this Commonwealth better every day. Because if you don't have an active S-G, you will end up with problems we are facing right now that could have easily been avoided through being active. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remove the Security Council? One of the biggest debates to hit the Senate hall recently is that of admin reform. Both strong support and opposition has been voiced during the debate, with key contributors from all the Commonwealth's regions. After multiple revisions, it finally looks like it may be put up for debate once the Secretary-General elections are over. Yay or Nay? Voice your opinion in the poll below!
Short Interview from a major voice for the amendment, Mute:
Spoiler: click to toggle 1) Can you tell us in brief, what this amendment entails? The new amendment makes the admin selection process less confusing and less bureaucratic, while making its purpose more clear. It also increases forum security by not only making admins more-or-less permanent, but making it possible for other admins to remove a rogue while the senate acts.
2) What can you tell us of this amendment's origins? As in who created it, what was the driving force behind its creation? The amendment was actually suggested by Commonwealth founder and former member, People United Together. Her outside perspective and insight into the charter's creation were invaluable in addressing most of the major concerns people were having with the first two.
3) Do you support this amendment, or no? Why? I support this amendment, but not for the reasons folks like Likako seem to think. There is a concern that the current process is too bureaucratic, yes, but the primary criticism is that the charter currently seems to imply that all regions should expect to have their own admin at some point. I recognize that adding another admin every time we gain a new region is ridiculous, so part of the goal of this new amendment was to make it clear that new member regions should not expect their own personal admin from their own ranks. The rest I outlined above.
4) Who has been the most helpful in creating this amendment? Roy_Mustang, who was in opposition to the other amendments, was extremely helpful in adding and editing clauses that address security concerns. PUT, of course, is responsible for suggesting it in the first place, her current non-membership aside.
5)What is the opposition's case against the amendment? The opposition has not had a chance to respond to the new amendment by the time I've written this. Criticisms of the old one were primarily leveled at forum security, which this new amendment has sought to answer.
