The United States and Atlantis; Ambitious USNA foreign policy intiative

Today, President William Regal announced a bold new foreign policy intiative, aiming to improve relations with the states of Atlantis.

Regal, merely only a month or so into office and wanting to kick his presidency off to a roaring start, announced his plan in a major press conference aired on networks across the United States that has U.S. bloggers buzzing.

The president's plan does the following:

  • Open a trade agreement between the U.S.N.A., Mestra, the Lemurian Islands, Castilis, Cal Gallia, Duran, and others yet to be named
  • Opens the possibility of an international alliance, military or otherwise between the said Atlantis nations and the United States
  • Remove restrictions on travel and movement between the countries
  • Open United States markets to Atlantis imports at 75% normal costs
  • Open Atlantis markets to United States imports at 75% normal costs
  • Allows the United States and Atlantean nations to participate in one another's sports leagues and cultural events
  • Removes most immigration restrictions between the United States and Atlantean nations
  • Enables heads of states and governments of Atlantis and the United States to receive formal arrivals and state dinners in the respective countries

While many of these ideas aren't necessarily new ones, the scope of the plan (covering much of the region of Atlantis) is the biggest foreign venture any U.S. president has ever undertaken. Regal has the backing of Democrats, and some Republicans, in the U.S. Congress, particularly in the U.S. Senate where pro-Atlantis feelings are more prevalent than in the rather isolationist U.S. House of Representatives. The so-called "United States-Atlantis Bilateral Relations Improvement Agenda", must be drawn up as an official treaty between the Atlanteans and the United States before either House of Congress can take the issue up. Right now, it's up to the President and his diplomatic team to hash all this out.

The only question is... will the Atlanteans bite? Or will they pass on this and snub the United States?
