...still my guitar gently weeps.
I have quite a few.

Woody Allen:
The guy is awesome. He can make great comedy films. At the same time, he can also make great drama films as well. His films usually always have some deep profound meaning (usually about relationships). He knows his film history as well.
Recommendations: Annie Hall and Manhattan

Stanley Kubrick:
A very diverse director. He can make war films, dramas, comedies, romance, science fiction, and horror. Seems to always challenge himself during his lifetime. I'm sure everybody has at least heard of him. A student of film as well.
Recommendations: A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and 2001: A Space Odyssey

Martin Scorsese:
Even though he only got one Oscar, he should've gotten a lot more. I haven't seen too many of his films, but I've never been dissatisfied so far. Even though The Departed is a remake, it was still pretty damn good.
Recommendations: The Departed, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas

Quentin Tarantino:
Even though a lot of people think he steals ideas from films, I think it's more as a homage to films and genres he saw when he was young. Pretty much all of his films pay homage to at least a few movies or genres. Tarantino's films are just fun to watch.
Recommendations: Pulp Fiction (f*ckin' brilliant), Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill

Danny Boyle:
Great British director. Creates some of my favorite scenes in film. I don't think his films are very deep, but they're just fun to watch. He hasn't made that many films, but I'm sure he's not close to retirement yet.
Recommendations: Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, and Sunshine

The Coen Brothers:
Awesome. That's it. Can't wait to see No Country for Old Men.
Recommendations: Fargo, Miller's Crossing, and The Big Lebowski

Chan-wook Park:
Finally, somebody that doesn't speak English. Makes very good thrillers. His films are always beautiful. Those who haven't seen Oldboy really should consider.
Recommendations: Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and JSA: Joint Security Area

Christopher Nolan:
He's a fairly new director, but his films are never misses. Momento is a masterpiece. Can't wait for The Dark Knight.
Recommendations: Momento, Batman Begins, and The Prestige

Darren Aronofsky:
Very dark films. His camera angles are pretty creative. Pretty young director. Hopes he keeps making great art films.
Recommendations: Requiem for a Dream (The drug movie), The Fountain, and Pi

David Lynch:
I can't believe I almost forgot about him. His movies usually make no sense whatsoever (at least for the first viewing). Very artistic, usually very dark. Lynch is very good at conveying a mood or atmosphere. I still need to see Inland Empire.
Recommendations Mulholland Dr, Blue Velvet, and The Elephant Man
