White spirit is a petroleum derived liquid which is mainly used as an organic solvent. It is considered as a less volatile dry cleaning liquid used in western countries and other parts of the globe. Dry cleaning chemical solutions began to gain momentum from the beginning of 1930s. A typical white spirit compound consists of hydrocarbons, hexane as well as benzene content. White spirit is characterised with a butanol value of 29, initial boiling point of 65 Degree Celsius and dry point of 69 Degree Celsius. It is known by other names like mineral spirits, mineral turpentine, and petroleum spirits. White spirit is used as a solvent in aerosols, preservatives, varnishes and asphalt products. Paint industry makes the best use of white spirit compounds including mineral spirits.
Normally white spirit is subjected to hydrodesulphurization, hydrogenation and solvent extraction. Three grades of white spirit exist namely; low flash grade white spirit, regular grade white spirit and high grade flash white spirit. This grade limit is dependent upon the amount of crude component based in white spirit. White spirit is normally used as a solvent and paint thinner compound. Mineral spirit is very effective in removing oils, greases, carbon and other materials. Mineral turpentine is entirely different from normal turpentine in chemical properties. Chemical manufacturers recently developed a low odour version of mineral turpentine and it was a hot news item in major chemical journals. They developed this chemical product by removing more toxic aromatic compounds. Screen printing is another application area of white spirit chemical compound.
