Aries![]() As the Sun moves into Aries, its daily path crosses the equator and begins to move into the northern hemisphere. For most inhabited regions of the world this is the beginning of spring; the days become longer than the nights, and plants and animals burst into activity. Aries is the wake-up call of the zodiac. In ancient times the spring equinox marked the start of the New Year and festivities were held to honour the birth of new life and the new beginnings that lay in store. The Ram became celebrated in the associated stars as a sacred symbol of resurrection, since its fleece, when shorn, continues to grow and provides a constant, abundant supply. Its origin is Egyptian and derives from their practice of sacrificing the sacred ram to the Sun at the spring equinox, to ensure his return and secure a successful year ahead. Christian customs still reflect this New Year worship, for Easter - the rising of the Lord - is always held in the week after the full Moon that follows the Sun's entry into this sign; and eggs are given as a symbol of new life and new opportunities. Astrology is based on the belief that anything that emerges into physical being at any moment in time will share the spiritual qualities of that moment in time. Those born when the Sun is in Aries do so when the Sun is 'exalted' in astrological terms, since its return to the point of the zodiac where daylight begins to overcome the dark, is seen as the sun-god regaining his power and rising victorious to take control. Although ruled by the planet Mars, Aries has much to do with the solar qualities of creativity, energy, enthusiasm and courage. The Sun is the symbol of consciousness, individuality, clear direction and definition - the power of the will to rise above instinct and take control. Those born when the Sun is strong in the chart, as it is here in the sign of Aries, appreciate honesty and truth, hate deceit, and need things to be clearly expressed in an obvious, logical manner. Subtle undertones and delicate suggestions mean nothing to them; their greatness is to bring clarity and openness; their weakness is their limited capacity to 'feel' what you are talking about and their lack of sensitivity to those who expect them to read their minds. In addition to this solar quality, Aries resonates to the energy of its planetary ruler, Mars, recognised as the bringer of action and the impulse to attack or strike back. Mars is the defiant spirit; when dignified it will show courage, fearlessness, respected leadership, the propensity to take a risk and the lover of a challenge. In this form Mars is the moral champion, ready to take up arms on behalf of others less able or willing to put their necks on the line. When poorly placed and displaying its less noble traits, it represents needless aggression, violent eruptions, assertiveness to the point of selfishness, and the urge to take from others without due regard to their needs and well being. No astrologer can know from the sun-sign alone whether those born under this sign display the highest or lowest facets of its planetary ruler, but certainly they will be characterised by great energy and readiness for action, with impulsiveness and competitiveness marking their actions for good or bad. Arians are often referred to as ambitious and this can be true, but it is an ambition borne of the need to be in front, to let no man stand in their way. Just as often that disposition leads them into conflict with others who might otherwise have helped them if they'd taken a more carefully planned approach as witnessed through the true, long-sighted ambition of the Capricorn. But Aries tends to fight its way through life and if honour is deserved it is in the fact that they remain true to their instincts and impulses. Generally, what you see is what you get and what others might view as 'social niceties', they will be more inclined to view as unnecessary sycophantic hypocrisy. The reputed love of freedom is also worth considering. With the exaltation of the Sun in this sign, the striving towards independence of mind and spirit is strong, but that quest might often rely upon squashing the freedom or rights of others in order that the Aries urge to dominate is fulfilled. Even when it is a genuine challenge for a worthy cause, an Aries may get so wrapped up in the flush of the battle that they lose sight of the cause, failing to yield at appropriate points of negotiation that others would take as a fair-minded victory. Thus the Aries can suffer from a 'do or die' mentality. When they manage to 'do' they can emerge stupendous in the eyes of others, but where they 'die' their depressed spirit will find it difficult to accept defeat with stoic grace. Fortunately, this is not a sign that harbours grudges, it seeks instant gratification, and the easy ability to express on the surface what is felt within means that it vents its frustrations with directness as they arise. Others may find that abrasive, but Aries equally scorns political correctness, false civility and those who raise remembered slights long after the moment has passed. Other keywords attributed to Aries are adventurous and pioneering. Both of these are fair descriptions for a sign that dares to tread the road less travelled and will seek out challenge, consciously or unconsciously, as a way of feeling enthused and stimulated. Where that challenge is unconsciously driven, however, it often fails to bring a feeling of worth and can take the form of someone who believes the whole world is out to get them. This type of Aries fights itself and anyone brought into close contact, readily moved to temper and just as quickly calming down and regretting the consequences that their passion aroused. Much of this is reinforced by Aries' association with the element of fire, which in every sense is expressed through it, both by its rulership with Mars and natural association with the Sun. Fire depicts the qualities of heat and vitality and, as its symbol suggests, conveys an outgoing, reckless personality, craving attention and adding a vivacious sparkle to any occasion. But again, as is particularly the case with Aries, what fire types gain in confidence and drive they lose in sensitivity, patience, caution and practicality. The gift of the fire signs is creative inspiration, evolving into an endless supply of bright ideas and contagious enthusiasm. When the fire is lit, ie., when they are motivated by a cause, they simply blaze with energy and ideas and become so consumed by their passions that everyone around them feels drawn into the flame. But fire consumes, and ultimately those energy levels will drop, particularly if the Aries proclivity for instant action is not matched by the reality of instant results. Unless other factors in the chart bestow the needed discipline and perseverance, Arians can struggle to keep a sense of balance and are prone to suffering from nervous, emotional or physical 'burn out', refusing to recognise their limits or respect their bodily needs. As lovers, Aries can be refreshing, challenging and stimulating, but they can also be frank, easily irritated, noisy and demanding. Their high energy level usually gives a strong sex drive, but as always they are marked by the need for instant gratification and may not fully appreciate the soft touch and gentle, patient stimulation that a tender partner may require. If you are born under the sign of Aries, remember, the sun-sign indicates your true spirit, the heart of your being where you should find immense strength in self-expression. You should never seek to curb your natural qualities, but merely shape them and direct them into powerful, worthwhile and constructive outlets. Hence Aries should accept that it is naturally driven to lead and rarely aim to compromise this gift by trying to 'fit into the team'. Instead, the leadership qualities should be forged through recognition of the needs of the team and the desire to take your rightful place with full respect to others. Neither should you aim to make yourself less impulsive or inclined to act, despite the negative undertones that this keyword can suggest. Impulsiveness, and the urge to take action is your gift and your strength, leaving the hesitating majority in shame. Self-development can only come from striving to use your personality patterns for positive change and through the mental discipline and sense of responsibility that causes you to question and reflect upon unconscious motivations. If you are enraged and feel the urge to fight, question: are you fighting the right person over a matter of significance? Or is there a larger, more relevant battle that you should be dedicating your time and energies to, the battle for truth, honesty and, above all, self-respect? Remember also, that your symbol is the self-regenerating ram, representing your ability to arise with greater strength and vitality after periods of loss. Being prepared to 'let go' of the unused and the outgrown is essential if you are to develop your full force and potential, and the ridding of weighty, unnecessary baggage allows you keep re-evaluating your beliefs and needs in the context of the 'here and now'. As an Aries you've been given a significant gift of power, how that power is used is not determined by your astrological chart, but by the spirit through which you forge and express its energies. |

Taurus![]() Taurus is one of the most ancient signs of the zodiac and celebrates the domestication of the ox, which provided a cultural turning point for mankind. During the Taurean Age (4000 - 2000 BC), ancient civilisations flourished upon the labour of the bull and the agricultural benefits that arose from the associated invention of the plough. During this period the bull became one of the most important religious symbols, honoured as a powerful symbol of productivity and creativity. Today the sun passes through Taurus during the blossoming period of spring when new growth begins to colour and flower. This is a time of pleasant, relaxing warmth, lush greenery and gentle colours; the season of fertility where nature abounds with the rearing of the young and tender. Although renown for its reserves of strength and power, Taurus symbolises a mellow energy, easy going and slow to arouse in any particular passion. Those born under this sign like to take things easy and have a gift for appreciating the finer things in life. They may not demand the instant attention commanded by the livelier signs, but give them time and they start to reveal a depth of character that is very alluring and attractive. The Taurean manner is comforting, supportative and marked by a dry and earthy humour - neither subject to airy illusions or undue emotional excitement, their subtle 'get real' approach is a refreshing and welcomed anchorage point for those of us who are easily infected by exaggerated dreams, fiery passions, or unrealistic promises. The gift of the Taurean is resilience, fixidity and endurance. Taureans are often accused of being too fixed in their opinions and too slow to embrace change or mental motivation, but their insights have settled slowly, taking time to mature, and thus carry a strength of permanence that is resistant to superficial movement. What manifests as stubbornness to some can be seen from the opposite side as reliable reassurance and rare constancy. When Taureans adopt a cause or commit to friendship, they honour their pledges and allegiances, remaining steadfast to their loyalties through thick and thin. It is often said that you can't push a bull, you can only lead it from the front. Approach Taureans from the wrong angle and they simply become the immovable object that even the most irrepressible force won't shift. Although their nature is not aggressive, when locked in combat they possess the ultimate strength - the determination to do nothing at all, except refuse to shift. The capacity for stillness is a rare talent, and should a Taurean decide to park itself down and just sit, slow persuasive tactics are the only antidote. Brute force, intimidation, fear and threats roll off the back of a creature that knows you will tire of the game before it does. Taureans are inherently placid, so it is rare for them to lose their temper and display anger and aggression. When they do, fearful as they become, they lose touch with their true strength and display their vulnerability. They don't respond in anger lightly, so the act itself is a sign of severe distress and emotional confusion that deserves some consideration. But if a Taurean 'loses it', their instinct is to charge and rage; they display their distress through instantaneous physical destruction, noises and bangs rather than hurtful mental assaults, verbal spears, or the execution of a pre-planned attack. The proverbial 'bull in a china shop' has no purpose in the destruction, but by comparison to the innate strength and power of a raging bull, all the surroundings seem fragile and easily broken. Ultimately they will be the most distressed and frightened by the intensity of their passions and seek to close that vulnerability by hardening themselves emotionally. There are places that Taureans just do not want to go, making them the least communicative of all the zodiac types when it comes to revealing their inner workings or relating openly and honestly about their emotional drives. But relationships are important to the Taurean and so is love, though they may shy away from the frivolously romantic, or what they may consider 'sloppy' expressions of love. The sign is ruled by Venus, an association which strengthens the Taurean proclivity for earthy, sensual delights and physical desires. Anything that enchants and indulges the senses as well as the emotions is a source of pleasure to a Taurean, so that they are often marked by their interest in fine clothing, soft silks, rich velvets, jewels and works of art or beauty. Their leanings are generally towards the conventional and non-controversial, but through their pronounced sensuality they often reveal a true flair for mixing colours, smells, textures, tastes, sounds and sights to the delight of others and themselves. In their quest for harmony they will naturally shun the 'ugly', 'cheap' or 'crude', and others may mistake this as pure materialism, but it is an expression of their sensuous natures, through which adornment and refined environments create an extension of their own inner grace. As lovers, Taureans are known for being extremely physical, passionately fond of sex, but high in drive and low in imagination. Always veering towards the conservative and traditional, they dislike novelties, experimentation or quirky fads. Trust and stability are essential qualities in any relationships - this is not a sign suited to open marriages or free and superficial relationships. Neither do they like the confusion of the emotional games played in relationships, which leads to the kind of stress that promotes their less admirable traits. Jealousy is reputed to be one of their worst faults, but Taureans are no more inclined to jealousy than any of the other signs. The problem is they handle it badly: having a poor talent for the delicate art of scheming, they display their jealousy in a direct and obvious manner, making it very clear that in their terms a commitment is a commitment and carries a heavy responsibility. Some also accuse Taureans of being covetous, needing to possess and own, and having a very simplistic mental outlook that translates everything into that which is solid, reliable and practical - and therefore real - and that which is not. It is true that they struggle with abstract concepts and this is not a sign that is known for mental agility, lateral thinking or any particular skill in originality and inventiveness. Their interests revolve around established priniciples, so they are great lovers of history and heritage. In domestic life they adhere to traditional values, and in commerce they like to invest in proven collateral - property, antiques, that which has acquired its value over time and offers a slow and steady return. As the first of the 'Earth' signs, Taurus personalises the expressions 'solid as a rock' and 'down to earth'. There is a true affinity with earth, and being in the world of nature and surrounded by the products of the earth is a source of spiritual strength. Farming and agriculture belong to Taurus, relating back to the signs early origins. Productivity and creativity are also appropriate keywords - Taureans are never happier than when putting physical form to their concept of harmony and beauty. So you will find many involved in the creative arts, or demonstrating creativity in practical pursuits such as flower arranging, pottery, creative cookery, etc. For them, there is a real sense of relaxation in just 'doing' without the need to overtax oneself emotionally or mentally. Once motivated to begin a project, they shine through their noticeable powers of endurance and resilience. More than any other sign, this is one of hidden reserves of power and strength. Of solidity in form and character. |

Gemini![]() The sun-sign of 'the Twins' takes its name from the two bright stars that dominate the Gemini constellation. Duality is a central feature of its symbolism, and in ancient times the constellation Gemini was seen as a reminder that contradictory forces must be brought together and recognised as mutually dependent upon each other. The two pillars that represent the sign signify the incongruous forces of left and right, black and white, ignorance and understanding, evil and good, death and life. The myths attached to this sign are characterised by the contradictory aspects of the twins - in the Roman tale they are Pollux, born immortal and possessing great strength, and Castor, born mortal but exceeding in ingenuity and logic. Rather than be parted by death they agree to share immortality by living alternating lives on heaven and earth. The mortal partner turns to intellect to compensate for the immortal vibrancy he does not possess - yet the myth demonstrates the eternal union and mutual reliance of conscious reasoning and unconscious belief in the refusal of the twins to be separated. Thus, this sign can indicate acute polarisation of the spiritual and material, alternation between the extremes of rational logic and instinctive belief, and the quest to reconcile all contradictions in a central threshold where reason and belief, intellect and emotion, masculinity and femininity, merge into one. How does the Gemini do this? And how do the myths relate to the depiction of the typical Gemini as an individual marked by intellectual leanings and easy communication skills? The fact that Gemini is essentially a sign of polarity which swings rapidly through the realms of the conscious and unconscious, and just as rapidly swings back again, suggests that intellectual propensity is only half of a Geminian's inner motivation. Not enough has been made of the fact that Geminians can suffer from strange and inconsistent moods, that they will demonstrate periods of introverted self reflection in which they need to withdraw from superficial chatterings, just as strongly as they demonstrate the need to engage in it when that period of self-reflection has passed. Geminians do have a rare communicative gift, the basis of it is that their focus is not purely in the world of logic; it also encompasses the domain of the irrational. Geminians have the ability to see both sides of a situation and to communicate between the sides because their dextrous disposition ensures their experience of both extremes. It is less commonly reported that they are often subject to dark irrational broodings, periods of isolation and alienation, materialistic cynicism as well as idealistic inspiration. Yet the flexibility of character that Geminians possess has often been seen as a demonstration of their ability to be two things at once - both the victor and the victim; the healer and the invalid; the teacher and the student; the integration of opposites that never fully separates one partner from the other. This fusion occurs only after independent experience of both extremes has been absorbed, which requires that the antithesis of love, hate; confidence, insecurity; praise and insult; trust and falseness are first encountered as singular incidents before being recognised as two faces of the same coin. The concept of communication is the true quest of the Geminian, and sun sign depictions dwell on their talents as reporters, teachers, messengers, diplomats, interpreters, linguists and writers. Just as their sun-sign symbolises a regular flow between the experience of extremes, their planetary ruler, Mercury, promotes the communication of it. In Roman mythology Mercury is the winged messenger and communicator between the gods. The Romans focused upon the speed of the planet and emphasized the qualities of swiftness and 'alternation' in the form of trickery, verbal dexterity and flexibility. Hence Mercury is characterized as the god of thieves and liars as well as being the god of commerce, roads, gymnastic exercises and all that entails mental, verbal or physical deftness. By comparison to its Greek counterpart, Hermes, this is a shallow, superficial aspect of the god of learning, and demonstrates little of the profound, spiritual qualities generally attached to the notion of 'intelligence' by the more ancient cultures. But in the Greek equivalent Hermes, we see the amalgamation of the Egyptian God of knowledge, Thoth, and the Mesopotamian god of wisdom, Nabu. Hermes offers a more sacred face to the aspect of communication and in his manifestation of 'logical knowledge' Hermes acts as a holy personification of the Mind and Intelligence of the Creator. He is the inventor of language, written words, arithmetic and geometry, and his skill in communication is a direct demonstration of his Divine and Sacred powers - since the ability to define concepts in words, both visually and through sound, was considered by the ancient cultures to be a supernatural gift. Words, and the way they were constructed, were perceived as magical symbols, mirrors of the Divine Mind. Spoken with proper intonation and with the correct spiritual approach, they were the means to summon the gods, heal the sick and command obedience. Writing was a priestly study, held in awe by the uneducated and greatly honoured as a magical, mystical art. Only in the alchemical view of Mercury, as Mercurius, symbol of the process of transmutation, integration, synthesis and illumination, do we come close to restoring the Roman god Mercury with the full glory of his spiritual heritage. It is within this process that communication properly sits, and it is the Geminians, with their ability to experience and synthesize, that hold the keys to 'transmutation'. Gemini is a sign of endless curiosity driven by an instinct to explore. But they are characterised by 'breadth' not 'depth', so their explorations often lack focus and deep penetration. They are better suited to absorbing 'just enough' of a wide variety of topics, which adds to their reputation as fine conversationalists. They are not usually extreme in their views and are always willing to swap and trade their ideas with others, or change their perspective to suit their company. But they have a strong respect for intellectual independence and need to feel a mental rapport to be fully relaxed with others. Their easy ability to enjoy a broad variety of friends from different interests and inclinations has given Gemini a reputation as an easy and sociable sign, tending towards friendliness and optimism. Geminians are more likely to draw a wide circle of friends and associates than just a few close and intimate contacts and for this reason they have excellent networking talents that allow them to exceed in professional areas on the basis of who they know as much as what they know. They are well suited to any career that requires easy negotiation skills or the ability to express knowledge to others in flexible language that can be easily digested - journalism and teaching being particularly notable - or in professions that call for physical dexterity, light movement, and quick-thinking. The 'alternating' elements of Gemini remind us that this is the sign of trade, barter, exchange and swapping resources. Combined with the instinct for deft actions and quick decision making, Geminis make ideal entrepreneurs, renowned for their ability to manage several projects simultaneously. The sign features strongly in the charts of those who are light on their feet or slight of hand, being traditionally associated with athletes and gymnasts, magicians, conjurers, tricksters, conmen and and pickpockets! As lovers, Geminians are fun, lively, flirtatious and recognised by their youthful appearance or 'spirit of youth'. But they lack emotional intensity and are uncomfortable with deep emotional ties, particularly if they feel restricted in their freedom to chat and flirt with others. They are often capable of falling in love with two or more lovers simultaneously and are naturally curious to explore the sexual sides to their relationships. Hence a Gemini lover can be the source of endless frustration to a more committed and emotionally intense partner. Geminians are often accused of being trivial, superficial and fickle. Of course, they can be all of these, but a propensity to inconsistency and changeability also offers facets of a virtue when recognized as the ability to remain responsive to one's surroundings and deal with contradictory demands simultaneously. The mark of this sign is mental agility and 'bridge building'. In order to be understanding and responsive to all, they may at times appear to be 'two faced' or to lack in genuine sincerity. This is the price that must be paid by a disposition that moves with its environment. More than anything else Geminians are regarded as quick thinkers, the best of whom don't just 'act first - think later', but have mastered the pull of the extremes of thinking and feeling, and as a result combine their intellect and intuition with lightning speed, allowing them to think on their feet and deliver an instant, appropriate response. |

Cancer![]() As the sign of the Crab, the psychological traits of Cancer are characterised by the image of a creature with a tough, hardened shell protecting a soft and vulnerable centre. Cancer is ruled by the Moon and belongs to the element of water. Unlike most signs, which share their planetary rulers, Cancer claims exclusive rights to the Moon, both sign and planetary ruler termed 'cold and moist' in nature. Understanding the essence of that phrase reveals a lot about the complex sensitivity that lies beneath the Cancerian's thick, crustaceous shell. In ancient astrology the condition of 'moistness' was viewed as the capacity to release emotions and connect with other beings. Moisture blurs the boundaries that define us as distinct individuals, allowing empathy, sympathy and a shared experience of personal or collective events. The act of sharing emotions represents an important aspect of forming bonds and unions, so moisture is also a creative condition, which forms the basis of love, fertility and reproduction. When we become too emotional the natural reaction is to release the 'excess of water' through the shedding of tears. Hence, water as an element relates to the emotions and the world of feelings. It is a passive, absorbing element; receptive and keenly perceptive. The energy of water is fluid, unshaped, lacking consistency in definition and structure, but remarkable in its ability to seep into inaccessible places and change its form - sometimes appearing as vaporous as steam, sometimes as cold and solid as ice. The use of the word cold when applied to this element could never imply that there is insensitivity to feelings or detachment from emotions, but that the energy is passive, not active. Water 'types' are not quickly stirred to heated debate or dynamic, self-assertive action. Their tendency is to wait, reflect and absorb, responding to circumstances and remaining responsive to the needs of others and the changing demands of life's events. In the water signs of Scorpio and Pisces we see a different expression of this energy. Scorpio symbolises the stillness of the murky depths, areas so deep and dark that no movement occurs without the disturbance of long-accumulated sediment. Pisces, associated with the linear flow of the river, suggests a more immediate response to collective movement, trends and ideals. Lacking the hardened shell of the other water types, Pisces signifies a sensitive energy, easily impressed upon by its immediate environment. But Cancer, taking its habitation on the shore of the ocean, and governed by the Moon, responds to the cyclic and rhythmic rise and fall of life's ebb and flow. This sign is known for its moodiness, so Cancerians can be up one day and down the next, responding to the joys and pains of the world in a pattern that can (superficially) seem to bear little relation to the immediate events around them. Since Cancer finds its strength in instinctive, emotional responses, Cancerians are known for their remarkable psychic sensitivity, absorption of memories and receptiveness to emotional impressions. This is widely accepted as one of the most psychic signs of the zodiac and there is usually a marked interest in the occult, a vivid recollection of powerful dreams, and strong symbolic appreciation. But such an acute sensitivity to their physical and unconscious environment is a double-edged sword, and awareness of complex psychological factors that underlie apparently simple acts make it difficult for Cancerians to apply their will and foster their own self-interests unfettered by feelings of guilt and torn sympathies. This hesitancy and vulnerability to emotional impacts on themselves and others has given the sign a reputation for weakness, and a lack of ability to apply direct action to direct problems. In addition, this sign is one that dislikes glares of publicity and is rarely comfortable at the centre of attention. Traditional descriptions of the sign depict it as 'dark' and nocturnal, lacking in vibrancy. The astronomical foundation for this is that the constellation Cancer is a particularly dark and dimly lit region of the sky. It has few distinguishable stars and is mainly notable for a nebulous, cloud-like cluster which ancient astronomers regarded as an area where energies were dissipated. The connection with the element of water and the rulership by the Moon reinforces the ancient foundation of this reputation. The water element relates to the phlegmatic humour, which seeks to retain its energies and inclines towards lethargy, while association with the Moon adds to the sense of inconstancy and irrational or unreasonable behaviour - or behaviour that seems strange when evaluated solely by reason or the rational faculties. The more negative traits associated with this sign then, are physical weakness, lethargy bordering on laziness, a chaotic and unorganised application of methods (often the cause of associated sloppiness and untidiness in the home and dress), and a moodiness that is hard for others to relate to or fully understand. Cancer generally has a dislike of discipline, aptly symbolised by a creature that lacks an internal skeletal structure, but the Cancerian way of dealing with that is simply to avoid issues; there is little inclination towards rebellious acts or direct and open confrontations. The symbolism of the celestial crab also gives an insight into the way that Cancerians move through life, react to situations and respond to problems. Cancer is one of the few constellations that rises backwards in the zodiac. The Sun's entry into Cancer occurs at the summer solstice - a term derived from the appearance of the Sun 'standing still' as it approaches this point. The creature itself, of course, is known for its sidewards gait. So the movement associated with Cancer is a strange one, revealing a sense of hesitancy, a sidewards approach to things, and an element of moving forwards whilst not looking squarely at what lies ahead. Despite the intuitive gift that this sign possesses, Cancer is not known as a sign of quick action or immediate response. Cancerians tend to vacillate before deciding on a course of action, and once that course is chosen, the logic that lies beneath it is often convoluted. Decisions are based upon reasoning that is neither obvious nor apparent to other people, but presenting a great skill for lateral thinking, for originating solutions to problems from angles that others have not discovered. When combined with Cancer's natural artistic flair and strongly developed imagination, this can offer advantages in careers such as marketing, where the creative exploration of unconventional approaches can be seen as a real talent. The backwards gaze of the constellation is also symbolic of the Cancerian interest in the past, a trait that is emphasised by the Moon's rulership of the sign. This manifests on a personal and social level and Cancerians often have a keen interest in history, past cultures and traditions, as well as a high respect for personal history, genealogy, ancestral origins, nationalism, and a desire to preserve and protect family customs. Ruled by the Moon, Cancer relates to tribal instincts and ethnic origins, and there is often a clan-like attitude to one's own community and family structure. Cancerians make very caring parents, but they sometimes suffer from over-protection and 'clinginess' in domestic relationships, becoming too dependent on the need to preserve a tight-knit family unit and failing to recognise when it is appropriate to loosen the bonds. Of course, the function of the Moon is to nurture and protect the young, so maternal and paternal instincts run very strongly through this sign. Cardinal signs are noted for being changeable, and Cancerians are certainly changeable in their day-to-day views, emotions and opinions. But they find change in their environment and basic life-structure difficult to handle and have a deep need for security in personal relationships. They like to hold on tightly to what they value as near and dear to them. They make great partners for people who appreciate a caring and committed mate, and they enjoy the role of being domestic provider - catering to homely comforts, offering tasty and nourishing food and providing a secure and pleasant family environment. Theirs is a gentle, relaxing and delicate energy; they need warmth, intimacy and emotional closeness and would not be suited to partners that value emotional independence or are inclined towards sexual, spiritual or even intellectual freedom. Although Cancer is not inherently a materialistic sign, the image of a vice-like grip in their great pinching claws refusing to let go of what they see as rightly theirs, does apply to their material interests as well as their emotional investments. The word crabby, which generally means moody but is also taken to mean 'tight with money', originates from the reputation of this sign, in a trait that was recognised in the earliest texts. Manilius, writing in the 1st century AD, remarks of those born under this sign "Of a grasping spirit … and skill in making profits; … His is a shrewd nature, and he is ready to fight for his profits" (Astron. 4.165). It is within the area of business relationships that the Cancerian is best able to apply the protection of the tough upper casing and let the head rule the heart. Cancerians make good investors and good business managers - what they lack in 'pizzazz' they more than make up for in persistence and tenacity. Often underrated because of the softness of their emotional natures, it has to be remembered that, as the sign of the solstice, Cancer is a cardinal sign that does not give its ground away easily. Their hesitancy to act on first impulse makes them resistant to glib, superficial deals; instead they will circle around all options, vacillating to and fro, before finally settling on the deal that feels right for them. When they do invest financially, it is with caution and shrewdness. When they feel that their real interests - emotional or material - are at stake, they will fight to the bitter end. The irony is the motivation that powers them. They are driven by the need to safe-guard their family and loved ones, they have no real interests in acquiring wealth purely for their own use, but as a legacy of security that they can pass on to others that they care about. Cancer is a complex sign, capable of offering very different personas depending on the angle that you view them from. They are slow to form intimate relationships, yet unless a close emotional contact exists they are unlikely to expose the soft-underbelly that borders their vulnerable centre. Instead they will maintain a sense of detachment and what you will see from the outside is a hardened, impenetrable shell that gives no hint of where their true values lie. |

Leo![]() Leo is the sign of the Sun, the central heart of the solar system, majestic ruler of the heavens. In ancient times the Sun came to its full glory and reached the height of its annual ascent as it joined the stars in the constellation of the Lion. Ever since, lions have been portrayed in art, myth and iconography as powerful symbols of solar strength, supremacy, glory, light and brilliance. Widespread hero myths, such as those of Gilgamesh, Oedipus, Orion, Hercules or Samson, bear tales of wrestling with the lion; all have been identified as calendar myths that relate to the story of the sun's journey through the sky. As the hero does battle with the lion, he absorbs the solar qualities and takes them as his own. In the widely reported Greek myth, Leo is said to commemorate the fierce Nemean Lion, brother of the sphinx, which Hercules must defeat in the first of his trials. The Nemean lion is a symbol of the fierce and devastating summer heat that ravishes the land. No weapon, stone, club or instrument made of iron or bronze can penetrate its skin; it is an 'impossible' task, unyielding to cunning, craft or speed. Hercules can only succeed by summoning the entire strength of his being, the full magnitude of his inner will and fixed, determined spirit. His conquest becomes a testimony to the power of mind over matter, the individual's capacity to move heaven and earth and attain the unattainable through the process of connecting with the heart of one's being and giving full reign to the creative force that resides, mainly dormant, within. As the sign of the Sun, Leo is characterised by courage, an invincible attitude, and the gift of unsuppressed will to rise above the ordinary. Anatomically, Leo has rulership over the heart and blood; symbolically, it also signifies the metaphorical parallels that see the heart as the centre of strength and vitality, and the 'blood raising' process as one that allows us to engage in battles - moral, physical, territorial or political - free from the restraints of logical recognition of consequences or instinctive awareness of limitations. The word 'courage' derives from the Latin word for the heart, Cor, and literally means 'to take heart' (and therefore overcome one's fears). In the 'blood raising' process we become bigger, more powerful, more conscious and more capable than we normally consider ourselves to be, and Leos have an easy ability to take on this grander persona whenever they feel the need to assert qualities of superiority. The Sun is a natural symbol for power and command. Traditionally, the Sun represents the captain, the boss, the leader or the king. In Leo the lion, the 'king of the beasts', the theme of majestic grandeur is never far from the observable traits. Put simply, whatever opinions anyone else may have on the matter, a Leo perceives him- or herself as the royal center of activity. Lions are territorial animals and care little about what happens outside the boundaries of their own terrain; similarly, all Leos will have an area that they view as 'their kingdom' - their rightful place to shine where they can become the nucleus that directs, organizes and orchestrates. To some it is the domestic environment; to others, a hobby or intellectual pursuit; others yet may find it in a wider professional or political arena. Wherever this 'kingdom' exists, a Leo will take great pride and pleasure in being viewed as someone to look up to. Treat them with respect, and they demonstrate that well-earned reputation for a broad-minded, enthusiastic and magnanimous disposition. However, should a Leo have cause to view another as a predator, then never was a creature more sensitive or responsive to assumed slights and imagined threats. Open-minded tolerance and relaxed confidence fall away as ego-driven urges swing into gear. A Leo as an adversary makes a bloody-minded opponent and the dominating qualities of this sign are such that they rarely feel appeased with victory unless it involves the total annihilation of the threat. Leos are well known for sensitivity to their own emotions, and yet they are far less empathetic to the thoughts and feelings of others; hence this sign has one of the most fearsome reputations amongst the zodiac signs for exhibiting brutal or extreme behaviour. Ancient astrologers referred to Leo as 'bestial', meaning responsive to primordial instincts rather than higher reasoning; and 'feral' because it was considered capable of savage and ferociously destructive traits. This is the darker side of the Leo. It is rarely explored in sun-sign columns that dwell on the warmth, vitality, and sunshine-filled aura that Leos generally demonstrate when they are not being pushed to the limits of their behaviour. Other negative traits include a tendency towards being dogmatic, a bullying mentality, self-conceit, vanity, and a snobbish, patronizing disposition. Leo's element is fire and its nature is hot and dry. Fire types are characterised by spontaneity; swift, intuitive responses; vivacious and infectious ways of relating to others, and high energy levels. They are attracted to passion, drama and crave attention. This latter is particularly evident in Leos, who revel in positions that draw attention to them; where it is not forthcoming they will make conscious and unconscious attempts to foster it though the use of strong, vivid colours, dramatic gestures and overblown expressions. Traditionally the fire signs are termed Choleric, deriving from the Greek term Khole, meaning 'bile'. In humoral philosophy the bile is considered the seat for the expression of anger, thus choleric types are often considered irascible and quick to show their temper: externally in their words and actions, and internally through the way that their blood rate increases with their passions, leading to throbbing temple veins and flushed-red complexions. Nicholas Culpeper noted that such types are by nature "quick witted, bold, unshamedfaced, furious, hasty, quarrelsome" yet also "courageous". He described them as often full of anger and light in movement with a pulse which is swift and strong.[1] However, Leo is a fixed sign and therefore the propensity for hasty action is moderated. Leos are unlikely to respond to every trifling event and generally take time to let their opinions form, during the process of which many minor irritations resolve themselves. They are often referred to as simple-minded, meaning that they tend to relate to things exactly as they are expressed and see them just as they appear on the surface. Communication should be plain, simple and direct, though literary types may reveal a signature of flamboyance in rich and colourful, artistic expressions. Leos don't make a habit of looking for deeper meanings, neither do they have a very detailed eye, but tend to appreciate things from the broader perspective. This gives them a talent for seeing the whole picture and suits their leadership skills in that they have breadth of vision and a ready grasp of the overall shape of things. But they are out of their depth when dealing with the essential detailed practicalities that make the vision work and often rely upon the co-operation and support of more discerning types to ensure that particulars are not overlooked. Leos are commonly reported as being opposed to pettiness, and they seem to possess an optimistic belief that everything will work itself out in the fullness of time. Whilst a conviction that sweet providence is taking care of them is generally a blessing that sustains their confidence, and such buoyancy usually does foster success, this attitude can lead to major problems, especially when their disinterest in practical details combines with their leaning towards extravagance and exaggerated plans. Limitations of all sorts are alien to the Leo nature; and many Leos are poor at budgeting themselves or restricting their financial output to what they can actually afford. They are prone to ostentatious financial commitments and material indulgences that incline them to live at the edge of their means if not beyond. Periods when balancing the books is necessary can be a very depressing time for Leos; this often comes in the form of a crisis that can no longer be ignored. The importance of self-limitation is a lesson that ought to be driven home to all young Leos, but their lack of natural talent in this area is part of the downside of having a colourful attitude towards living life to the fullest. As lovers and partners Leos are a strange mix of contradictory traits. They are known for being expressive, extravagant and warm with their affections, but equally they have a self-obsessed quality that can become a point of conflict in one-to-one relationships based on a platform of mutual equality. They can go through periods of excluding the partner, being totally absorbed in their own interests, and then make grand romantic gestures, becoming overwhelming charming for a while in an effort to make up for their neglect. Leos are usually loyal and straightforward with their emotions, striving for stability; they dislike subtle game playing and put great store by honesty and openness. However, traditionally, the sign is not a favourable one for marriage because Leos basically have a problem with sharing their field and maintain rigid, inflexible views on the essential way that life should be. Successful relationships can occur with partners that are more flexible in their approach, able to tolerate periods of exclusion in exchange for lots of fuss and attention from time to time, and especially if that partner is malleable enough to maintain independent interests whilst helping to support the Leo in mundane practicalities. There is usually no shortage of romantic candidates drawn to their vibrant and charismatic appeal and young love can be intensely passionate. Like all the fire signs, Leos are idealistic and don't hold back from expressing their passion. They are extremely responsive to romantic attention, which is very gratifying to their ever-hungry ego, and as such they can suffer from rash romantic liaisons that are impetuous and unsuitable on a long term basis. "Guileless are the sentiments of their honest heart" claimed Manilius in the 1st century AD [2] - they are often said to act foolishly by placing too great a faith in human nature and expecting other people to see things in the simple, black and white shades that colour their vision. All of the sun signs show us the traits that we can use to connect with a powerful force that makes us distinguished individuals, capable of rising above our habitual fears. The faults of the Leo are no more than the extremes of a nature that recognizes this most easily of all. Where the Sun shines, truth, nobility and pure-penetrating vitality can be found. Used consciously, Leo represents an elemental power that is healing, light-bringing, direct, joyous and strong. We simply need to remember that the lion can act like a pussy-cat at times, but it in its own heart it is always a magnificent creature that can never be fully tamed or manipulated against its will. |

Virgo![]() Virgo often gets a poor astrological report. The poem on the left typifies the critical, hypochondriacal tendencies dwelled upon by those that define the sign as pedantic, frigid and shrill. But this is a sign of rare understanding with discerning mental vision and it is only by applying such Virgoan traits that we see beyond the dross to recognise the Maiden in all her glory. According to the ancient sources the gifts that she bestows are purity and grace; a charming turn of phrase, diplomacy, a mastery of words; a discriminating intellect and propensity for study; a talent for investigation and analysis; skilful creativity, and a keen appreciation of the mysteries of nature. Burdened by bashfulness in their early years, Virgos often undermine the value of such admirable qualities, shunning attention whilst holding a remarkable capacity to be comfortable in their own company. The fundamental characteristics of Virgo are founded upon the productive creativity and practicality of the earth element, stimulated by the intellectual ingenuity and rapid movement of the sign's planetary ruler, Mercury. Both element and ruler characterise the sign as 'cool and dry', as does the calendrical association with autumn, when nature - having borne its fruit - recedes into conservation. As a temporal humour 'dryness' inhibits emotional receptivity and many sun-sign profiles refer to Virgo's reputation for impassionate reactions and cool responses as a character-flaw, failing to appreciate that the ability to hold sentiment in check is the requisite of the intellectual clarity that sets this sign apart. Clear reason can only emerge when disentangled from the conflicting ties of emotional attachment; yet although it has a just reputation for control over passions, Virgo is not an unsympathetic or insensitive sign. Essentially gentle and thoughtful, consideration to others is a pronounced trait and figures strongly on their limited list of expectations and demands. Neither is Virgo lacking in intuitive recognition. Unlike the water signs, which pick up easily on psychic impressions, often absorbing moods that are poorly comprehended by reason, Virgo forms reliable instinctive impressions through a powerful gut-reaction, (their energy is seated in the gut), aided by their ready ability to analyse complexities and penetrate superficial presentations. The result is a talent for forming good judgement quickly and applying it to practical affairs. Having a sense for simplicity and harmony, Virgos move through their environment effortlessly rearranging, organising, and bringing order to chaos. From the Virgoan housewife who passes through a room picking up the clutter as she goes, to the business analyst skilled in recognising where communication flow becomes knotted, Virgos are adept at sorting out the 'little things' which, unattended, collect together to create big problems. Coolness as a humour brings passivity and fixidity. This is less of a problem for Virgo than the other earth signs because of the stirring Mercurial influence which lightens movement, adds mental flexibility and allows a sharper reaction than can be expected from her Taurean and Capricornian colleagues. Grounded by the earthy qualities of practicality and realism, Virgos have little interest in abstract theories that defy application; nor do they strive towards the unrealistic levels of perfection that many accuse them of. As an earth sign Virgo is ultimately a realist not an idealist, and if they have acquired a reputation for being a perfectionist it is simply because of their proclivity for diligence and consistency. Virgos are unhappy with slack standards and being predisposed to working long and hard themselves it is to be expected that they will urge others likewise. However, the sign would not have the reputation for good judgement that it does were it not for the ability to balance ideals against available time and resources. In this Virgos are particularly gifted and can be relied upon to identify the most satisfactory expectations under any given set of circumstances, and to plan efficiently and work appropriately towards fulfilling them. With such perceptive insight, enviable application and diplomatic expression, we might consider this sign exceptionally well equipped for manoeuvring into authoritative positions and gaining an abundance of material success. Yet they are rarely driven by the accumulation of power or wealth and for the most part take full satisfaction in providing the wind beneath the wings of other high-fliers. The dry disposition which feeds their talent for analysis rejects public attention and seeks to avoid centre-stage at all costs. They adhere to responsibility but do not like to assume it. Being of a modest nature they are apt to underestimate their own abilities, are too cautious to engage in the gambles and 'devil may care' risks required of the entrepreneurial spirit, and cling to convention, preferring to operate within established frameworks where they can evaluate themselves against predetermined criteria. Too often dismissed as ideal 'secretarial material', Virgos can and do excel in managerial positions, but usually within the directives of a large corporate identity where there are established procedures and a higher level of authority to defer to. It's not that Virgos seek out positions of support but placed within them they find contentment and they can gather great pride and self-respect in offering themselves to the service of something that appears to play an important role in society. For some this will be a marriage vow; for others the principles of parenthood; or it might be an industry, institution, charity, religion, political cause, or area of study. Even the most outstanding Virgo individuals can be seen to express this trait, a classic example being Queen Elizabeth I who achieved great personal glory and held the highest position of command, but drew her strength from the Virgoan aspiration of honouring her responsibilities and serving the needs of her country. So it is with love. It is often claimed that Virgo's cool ardour is the result of such impossibly high romantic ideals that few are able to rouse the sign to heights of passion. Certainly this is not a sign to 'put it about' and their natural discrimination can leave them unimpressed by false personas that elsewhere gather a lot of attention, but given the right conditions Virgo can be as passionate and romantic as any other sign of the zodiac. The problem is that Virgo is decidedly uncomfortable in love affairs that challenge the practicality of their everyday life and responsibilities. Temptations may be strong and sincere, and painful broken-hearts may be involved, but of all the signs Virgos are least likely to give up everything that defines the structure of their life in the hope of emotional fulfilment with the partner of their dreams. Like Celia Johnson in the romantic drama Brief Encounter, Virgos decline self-indulgence where it conflicts with the duties that they hold in good conscience. And lacking the will to take inappropriate pleasure where another will take discomfort, they will settle for the practical solution that is most acceding to the needs of everyone involved, usually accepting the burden of self-restraint rather than the distress they would feel pursuing self-centred interests. Other signs may be persuaded that we only live once and we must put out own needs first, but not Virgo. The realisation of being integrally bound to everything around them anchors them, for better and for worse. In many ways this is the true beauty of the sign. Virgos are blessed with a natural sense of harmony and that could hardly be expressed without an inner motivation towards synchronization. Such recognition inclines them to pursuits that call for integration between the mind and the body, fostering a particularly well suited interest in astrology (where creative intelligence and the cycles of nature are married in the study of heaven and earth), herbalism, natural therapies and many forms of complimentary medicine. With the urge to 'do' and 'make' as forceful as their urge to 'think' and 'analyse', Virgos in fact delight in all crafts where they can create something useful or beautiful out of raw materials and the application of ingenuity. The sign has a deep connection with the produce of the earth and taken as the herald of the harvest Virgo expresses the principle of gathering in and organising the fruits of labour. From the zodiac's origin as a device to record seasonal activity, the Virgo month is symbolically attached to the activities that centre around taking stock of resources and planning for the season ahead based upon the knowledge of what is available and the expectation that there is 'no or little more to come'. Consequently, although the sign abounds in expressed creativity, its essence is to put to good use what is currently accessible rather than the expectation of increase. Thus we understand the otherwise contradictory element of Virgo's definition as a 'barren' sign, which is used in decumbiture as an indication of infertility. Virgo is a conservative energy and conservatism is a word that can be applied to every level of a Virgo's self-expression. The concern with methodical categorisation is merely a manifest aspect of this, acutely observed by traditional authors who listed objects and places of storage as one of the sign's mayor themes of signification. |

Libra![]() As the sun enters the sign of Libra it returns to the equator, bringing equal day and night to all places on earth. This balancing of light and dark resonates to the symbolism of restoring equilibrium. In ancient times the period was set aside for evaluating the current status of events, estimating forthcoming needs, addressing outstanding problems and calculating a workable plan for the season of hardship that lay ahead. The ancient Egyptians used the scales as a potent symbol of the judgement cast at the end of life, where the soul of the departed was weighed against the Feather of Truth. In Roman mythology the goddess Astraea ruled over justice and law, holding the balance as her means to establish which situations required karmic intervention to restore fairness and equality. Those born in this period ingrained with the qualities of analysis, judgement and balance are creatures of a celestial environment that shies away from extremes and excesses. Librans have acquired a fitting reputation for being the 'moderates' of the zodiac, with a natural talent for comparison, differentiation, and impartial philosophical reasoning. They are capable of displaying excellent intercommunication skills based upon a fine interplay between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Generally, they can be counted upon to demonstrate a fair and unprejudiced judgement that attempts to temper personal bias through recognition of wider social implications. One way or another, Librans are driven by the need to find a position of balance and fairness. They recognise that the search for equality and justice must begin with inward reflection and are more than happy to scrutinize their own emotional behaviour or have it analysed by others. In the search for fairness, they consider carefully that others may hold a different viewpoint than their own, and make an earnest attempt to see things from alternate perspectives. The difficulty then, is how does a seeker of harmony best handle a profusion of conflicting realities? Can they be synthesised into a rounded whole, or will they simply lead to inconstancy and indecision, with a wavering from one opinion to the next? The Librans that live up to the nobler qualities of their sun-signs have learned to exercise true judgement and discretion. First they analyse, and then they integrate into a solution and resolve, holding firm to their principles unless new knowledge comes to light that calls for a re-evaluation. But this of course, requires a form of extremism in itself, and so the Libran must turn himself inside out, and in the process of maturing as a person come to understand that the only true state of non-conflict is inertia. Even in the quest for peace and harmony, one must be prepared to take a stand and hold to it regardless of the discomfort this causes to others, and thus, oneself. Not surprisingly then, Libra is a far more complex sign than many sun-sign snapshots can express. Finding harmony in a world full of ebb and flow, tensions and strains, is no easy task, and rather than living a life full of relaxed relationships and easy contentment, most Librans are very painfully aware of difficult day-to-day conflicts and the discomfort that arises whenever their views are at odds with those of another. Many sun sign descriptions classify Libra as the most desirable of all the zodiac types, a rather distorted reflection upon the sign where the Sun is traditionally said to experience its fall. The reality is that the Sun, as a symbol of creative self-expression and individuality, is debilitated in Libra, precisely because Librans are forever prone to evaluating their own needs against a complicated backdrop where they must take account of their responsibilities to others. In terms of finding one's true path and asserting one's own standpoint openly, directly, clearly - unfettered by what other people think - this is a major hindrance. Librans are simply not comfortable in that position and have to overcome major instinctive barriers in order to maintain a fixed resolve that centres upon pursuing their own personal needs. If they hold fast to the deeper spiritual principles of their sign, they will not feel obliged to offer concessions in order to avoid confrontation, but will be happy to take up a position of polarisation, to stand with equal force against whatever they are opposed to. In this sense they become the true 'equalisers', the children of the scales who, using the weapons of tact, grace, fairness and reason, are unafraid to meet the challenge of negating oppressive forces. Libra is a cardinal sign, underlain with a strong will that inclines towards initiating changes. Yet of all the cardinal signs Libra is the most underrated force; for their non-intimidating personas can often fool us into thinking that they will give up on their goals far easier than they will. This natural subjugation of clear ego-expression is further compounded by Libra's rulership by Venus, the planet that needs to relate, that needs to be wanted, and needs to be approved of by others. Librans simply cannot get away from the fact that relationships and recognition of responsibilities to others is the major focus that turns their world. It dictates their feelings and propels their actions; so it is often the case that Librans feel beset by relationship problems - or the problem of getting into one. The rulership by Venus adds to their reputation of being a very diplomatic and charming character type. They are renown for presenting themselves to others attractively, with a refined sense of artistic taste and appreciation, and an instinct for adorning themselves with polish and finesse. In Libra, Venus occupies its diurnal rulership, where it expects to be very apparent and visibly expressed, although it can be argued that - living in a world where they want to express beauty and pleasure, and see it so obviously manifest around them - Librans can be too easily swayed by agreeable surface appearances. Most of us rarely live up to the higher qualities of our sun sign and many of the negative traits associated with this sign - indecision, gullibility, falseness, unexpressed resentment, overindulgence of pleasurable interests, oscillating between two extremes - are readily observed in your day-to-day Libran, with their irritating overuse of 'it's not fair!' and 'on the other hand'. Many Librans are all too eager to live in superficial harmony and can be exasperating in their avoidance of uncomfortable issues. Like the betrayed wife who has good reason to suspect her husband is having an affair but would rather not think about it, or the philandering lover who assures you of total commitment before disappearing off the scene - so long as it looks good on the surface, Librans can usually convince themselves that all is as it should be. They have a natural talent with words and a predisposition for assuming that, if everything sounds right, it probably is; this makes it easy for Librans to glibly assure others of their sincerity - failing to recognise the actual insincerity of doing so. Librans can also be very adept at ensuring that 'compromise' and 'negotiation' gives them everything they want. And rather than honestly admit that they are pursuing their own agendas, they will attempt to gain support by expecting others to view the situation through their eyes. When called to question, Librans will attempt due self-analysis and introspection, but reason - not profound realisation and contemplation of deeper motives - will quickly lead them to feel justified and see their intentions as reasonable. Librans are often more concerned about defending themselves intelligently than considering the deeper moral angle: If the words sound right, that's good enough; it isn't a lie if the sentence is cleverly constructed. The net result is that Librans, unless very wise and tactful, often leave people with the impression that they are shallow in their moral stance, weak in their adherence to principles and disingenuous in their tactics. When they successfully navigate themselves to a position of victory in conflict, there is often an uneasy feeling of manipulation left behind. Most people, being stabbed in the back, would prefer not to have a smiley sticker placed upon the wound; as Oscar Wilde, himself a Libran, observed: Each man kills the thing he loves By each let this be heard Some do it with a bitter look Some with a flattering word The coward does it with a kiss The brave man with a sword! The Ballad of Reading Gaol, 1897. Yes, Librans do it with a kiss! This zodiac type, so well revered for being considerate, socially acceptable and 'easy to get along with', can often leave a trail of deep frustration in its attempt to sweet-talk its way out of unpleasant difficulties and messy emotional problems. In aiming to be considerate, Libra has a natural aversion to dealing with that painful but necessary stage called 'closure'. Always willing to leave negotiations - and therefore their options - open, the biggest fault of the Libran is that in striving to be fair to others, they are often anything but. As an air sign, Libra likes to keep things light, bright and positive. The element of air relates to the sanguine humour indicating a disposition that is moderate, well rounded, and by nature optimistic. Sanguine temperaments aim for the middle ground, disliking extreme reactions or innovative, off the wall approaches. Thus, Librans excel at appearing to offer all things to all men, but are less suited to intense and demanding relationships. Earth types will view them as frivolous and uncommitted, water types will view them as unresponsive to their more ponderous emotional needs, and fiery types will generally be unimpressed by a cool and charming veneer if it falls away to reveal an absence of vivacious sparkle and charismatic energy. As a humane sign, Libra is marked by civility, good manners, a flattering turn of phrase and an absence of coarseness. In professional fields Librans make the born diplomat, the perfect negotiator, the faultless 'meet and greet' face that works well in all areas of public relations. They may also find their niche in artistic fields, where their penchant for moulding light, colour, and shape into a balanced and symmetrical form that offers popular appeal works well for commercial image. Their style is conventional rather than passionate, off-beat or quirky; and they sit comfortably in business settings that demand an attractive and easily appreciated 'front'. The ideal vocation for a Libran, however, is within the fields of law, government, statesmanship and civil justice. Libra, at its best, is the signature of the true strategist, where reason appropriately overrules emotion and serves the wider aim of redressing inequality and unfairness. Only when the Libran rises to a position where they no longer see themselves as the centre of their own universe, but as an agent of equilibrium within their social environment, can they come close to fully appreciating the cosmic power that they have been given. Balance is easily found in stillness, but serves a greater purpose when it holds us upright through the roughest of storms, with our vision locked to the distant horizon. Not by sticking to the middle ground, but by remaining centred upon ideals can the Libran break free from wavering distractions and find a place of balance and harmony that represents their own inner equilibrium. |

Scorpio![]() Scorpio holds the enviable reputation of being the most sexually magnetic, smoulderingly charismatic, and psychologically enigmatic of all the zodiac figures. Wonderful! … But there is, of course, a downside (no sign gets it all). Scorpio has also garnered the most derogatory collection of 'keywords', with its predilection for subtlety and self-preservation never far from the inference of craftiness, cunning, betrayal, and deceit. Throughout history, Scorpio has been subjected to ongoing slanderous assault: Considered a dark, defensive sign with subterranean drives and a powerful reservoir of emotional energy, Scorpio has often been used as a significator for liars, backstabbers, traitors, thieves, lechers, and all sorts of dubious users and abusers! In medieval times scorpions were emblems of evil, death, and the serving of self-interest, used as a token for Judas in Christian symbolism because of the deadly treachery implicit in their sting. [1] Fortunately - in view of such disparaging associations - Scorpios are also known for their impenetrable defences, and for their ability to beguile opponents into underestimating both their resilience, and the fixidity of purpose that fuels their interminable self-will. The dark and heavy emphasis of traditional texts leaves a very unbalanced, one-sided view of Scorpio's fundamental dynamics. Whilst the essence of 'darkness' permeates this feminine, phlegmatic, nocturnal and autumnal sign in every aspect of its symbolism, the value judgements that we place upon astrological motifs are often inappropriate. No sign ever falls on the negative end of a moral trait; it is only bound to representing an archetypal theme and bringing both extremes of that theme into focus. With Scorpio the inference of deceit picks out the theme of falsity and truth; and as we might expect, those with the acuity to be masters of deceit are also the best equipped to recognise it when they see it. In their gift of realising deception, rejecting hollowness and seeing through shallow facades, Scorpios are not afraid to expose realty for what it is; they are the emissaries of a more complete sense of truth than many of us are prepared to contemplate, the penetrating aspects of it often being too painfully sharp for comfort. The paradox of Scorpio is that when it is fooling you, it is not really acknowledging you at all. Real communication with this sign means engaging with honesty, no matter how candid, sordid or direct. Cheat you it may - that means nothing; when something really does matter Scorpio won't be fooled and it won't mess around with either pleasantries or mind games. Traditionally governed by Mars, Scorpios are genuinely capable of seeming destructive and intimidating, (towards noble ends as well as self-centred interests), because where Mars dominates there is little interest in compromise; the impulse is for active attack or strategic defence, whatever it takes to avoid yielding one inch more than necessary. But the direct, active principle of Mars is sublimated in its nocturnal expression, and like all water signs Scorpios seldom instigate attacks, preferring to hold their power in reserve. This undercurrent of unexpressed energy is the basis of an almost tangible magnetism, a sense of power embedded in the aura that reveals itself expressly when their acute defensive instinct is stirred. It's worth remembering that, as much as it may seem a contradiction, Scorpios strongest line of attack is always in defence, where their fixidity brings enduring patience and determination, and their natural resilience makes them seem practically impassable. Consider the role of scorpion gods in ancient symbolism and myth; invariably their function is to act as guardians, custodians and protectors; oblivious to external distraction but ferocious in the cruel retribution unleashed on those who break their sentinel. When Scorpios do engage in conflict their method of operation is perfectly reflected by the terrestrial creature that defines their celestial motif - all scorpions are venomous and all are predators, but they never actively hunt or chase down their prey; instead they patiently sit and wait, months if necessary, proceeding to ambush only when their quarry is close enough to stand little chance of escape. In business and battle Scorpios make inestimable adversaries, particularly when they take up positions where they can calculate, control and hold back a concerted effort until its execution will realise maximum impact. Consequently Scorpios excel at military leadership, board room politics and court room disputes; Second World War leaders Patton, Montgomery and Rommel were all Scorpios, locked together in a game of cool, calculated planning geared towards maximum damage for minimum effort. No doubt the capacity to hold the nerve and strike without hesitation has served Scorpio Bill Gates equally well in the battle ground of the business world. The ability to penetrate superficial gloss is a trait that Scorpio shares with Virgo, a sign to which it is tied in sympathy, albeit often with the inequitable viewpoint of Scorpio being the perpetrator of worldly-wise experience, and Virgo, the victim of purity born from naivety. Their affiliation is revealed in the similarities of their glyphs which represent the intestines and illustrate that both signs are highly sensitive to gut-reaction. Impetus derived from the guts rather than the brain is emotive and instinctive, 'gut instinct' being a potent motivator in the decision-making processes and emotional responses of both these signs. Yet with Virgo the glyph is closed off and recedes into itself, symbolising barrenness, an urge to be self-contained, but revealing a need to receive and allow itself to be drawn out in order to gain completeness. With Scorpio the glyph is outwardly extended, blatantly phallic, depicting an energy that is not so easily constrained; its impulse is to penetrate, invade, and when it does so its manner is unswerving and focussed. Both of these are feminine signs, so neither is comfortable with an easy, expressive discharge of internal energy; and since Scorpio is of the phlegmatic temperament it is even more driven towards internalisation. In order to penetrate it must first draw towards it: Scorpio doesn't walk into your territory, it doesn't flirt and cajole, it merely let's its own energy attract, and when penetrating your secrets it does so having lured you to a place where resistance is low. Like Virgo, Scorpio has an analytical gift: it probes the depths, breaks apart, identifies the dross and eliminates the wasteful or insincere. But whereas Virgo draws upon a Mercurial process of analysis and integration, Scorpio relies purely on its gut-reaction, its lack of quick mental assessment more than adequately compensated by heightened emotional/psychic sensitivity and a compulsive fixation upon a problem until its actual dimensions are finally exposed. Like all water signs, Scorpio finds a natural habitat in the world of feelings and instincts. Its emotional reservoir is incredibly strong since its fixed nature is resistant to easy movement, allowing the watery element to seep into rarely accessed depths that are not easily stirred, processed or purified. Within the practical application of using astrological symbolism to identify locations, the 'fixed element of water' is used to represent long-accumulated sediment, water trapped by the coldness of ice or the heaviness of mud. It is moved only by great effort and force, signifying torrents, flooded land and destructive mud-slides. In drawing an analogy between water and the realm of human emotions, we can see why this sign has a natural attachment to depth-psychology: Scorpio has a very rich and fertile insight into the underbelly of life, and even in the definition of the sign as 'autumnal' we are reminded that the emphasis is taken away from that which exposes itself on the surface, to the need to withdraw back to the fundamental root. Here destruction and creativity meet together, causing a tremendous alchemical reaction between attraction and repulsion, a transmutative force which deserves the highest respect since a negative or uncontrolled release is capable of destruction, just as a positive, controlled discharge is imbibed with the power to sweep away all boundaries of resistance. The Egyptians, who accorded great honour to scorpions and beetles, recognised the spiritual alliance between the creatures that dwelt beneath the earth and the magical, alchemical processes of life, death and regeneration. The most blessed state was to be born in a 'rich compost' of power, and the black, fertile mud of the Nile delta was their Prima Materia, the bubbling melting pot of creativity where decomposing elements underwent an attractive reaction that allowed the emergence of new life. Their word for this black, muddy earth was Kemit, adopted as khemia by the Greeks, and eventually forming the basis of the word alchemy which has dropped its spiritual dimension - but not its power to transmute and create - in the modern word chemistry. Whilst all the water signs are known for their fertile potential, it is with dark, still, muddy Scorpio that we encounter the truly powerful creative potential. Similar analogies are revealed through the relationships between the signs of the zodiac and the parts of the body they rule. These are never 'ad hoc' connections, and allow us another route to explore the deeper motive of each sign. Scorpio governs the groin area: the 'private parts' which contain the reproductive and excretory organs. Reproduction expresses the drive towards continuance, 'seed' being symbolic of latent life force and reserves of power as yet unexploited. Excretion demonstrates the need to eliminate that which has served its purpose; thus in the bodily processes of procreation and elimination we see the metaphysical reflection of the Scorpionic dance through attraction, creation, destruction and regeneration. For Scorpios who lack conscious direction this can seem an exhaustive ongoing process, a life full of highs and lows, passion and pain, with the zenith and nadir of experience expanding with each successive turn. There is no doubt that this full exposure to experience involves pain, suffering, hardship, distress and agonised emotions. The 'private parts' relate symbolically to the depths of the hidden, unlit realms; where the raw, gritty and disquieting elements of all that is unpleasant and socially unacceptable take place. Most Scorpios have encountered the harsher realities of the world at some level or another, and being fixed in disposition they retain their experiences - even the most in-depth, transpersonal counselling techniques can only help to bring acceptance and understanding, they do not erase the memories. Through Scorpio we are drawn to confronting and conquering such demons, a journey requiring an honest acceptance of how we contribute towards, as well as suffer from, the issues that underlie corrupted patterns of behaviour. It has been said that no one has a true understanding of any brutal, distressing event until they have experienced it in full. Who can claim to understand or even try to break any pattern of abuse except those that have acknowledged their part as both abuser and abused, and then, having risen outside of the circle, brought the wisdom of experience to the needs of those still suffering within it? Scorpios that are in or have worked through this cycle naturally find it hard to be lightly chatty about it. Any attempt to skirt around issues, whatever form they take, smacks of insincerity and avoidance, and Scorpios have seen too much, and worked too hard to deal honestly with the darker sides of reality, to engage in a world of pretence. Even in their sarcastic sense of humour Scorpios have a way of reminding us that we may laugh at life, but we should never be too flippant about it. If, as the Egyptians thought, scorpions represent initiation into the sacred mysteries, we can consider the sign's other related creature, the eagle, as a higher expression of Scorpio power. Many ancient astrologers, including Ibn Ezra, recognised eagle symbolism as valid to this sign, since the biblical prophet Ezekiel described a vision, believed to be drawn from Babylonian astrology and representative of the 'fixed cross of matter': As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man [Aquarius], and the face of a lion [Leo], on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox [Taurus] on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle [Scorpio]. (Ezekiel 1 verse 10). Saint John's book of the Apocalypse (Revelation 4, v7) also alludes to the vision, of which Fred Gettings, in The Secret Zodiac, writes: The eagle of St John is the eagle of Scorpio, which sign (alone of all the twelve) has two images, the eagle the symbol of the redeemed and spiritualized Scorpionic nature, the scorpion its fallen, unredeemed and earth-bound nature. [2] Transcendence from the crawling scorpion to the soaring eagle, still predatory, still conveying the essence of patience and penetration, but capable of flight and height, brings together the theme of destruction and renewal as a story of evolution. The argument that the constellation Aquila the Eagle took its name from the time it coincided with the summer solstice - the bird of greatest elevation assuming the symbolism of the summit of the Sun - supports the view that in this respect the eagle is representing the 'Scorpionic myth' of the phoenix, which self-immolates after turning its nest into a funeral pyre and, (according to the Roman historian Pliny's report), rises again, initially as a small worm that grows from the bones and marrow of the carcass. [3] All Scorpios feel themselves to be on this spiritual quest of transformation and it should be remembered that their depth of mind is as equally attracted to higher philosophy as it is to depth psychology. Being committed to such a purposeful journey, Scorpios may well seem too intense to many, immensely secretive regarding private matters, unforgiving, jealous and possessive of their territory, and instinctively hostile to those who stand in their way. Their emotions are strong and passionate, but they run deep and are not easily expressed. Their relationships are seldom relaxed and easy-going, as sexual attraction is often the means through which they explore their own emotional power and transformational journey. Once passion is lacking they are capable of an almost cold-heated detachment and reserve which can leave an acute sense of abandonment in the partner. Ultimately they follow their own path, and yet they remain intensely loyal to those to whom they give their allegiance, take their responsibilities seriously and respond positively to trust that is sincerely invested in them. Their personal magnetism draws many towards them and if they chose to take up a position of leadership their motivating will bears strong influence upon others and their persistence usually guarantees success. But they will often shy away from positions that involve long periods of being the centre of attention - bright light is stark and inhospitable to them. Although they enjoy pulling the strings of influence, they prefer to do so 'behind the scenes' or in such a way that ensures their personal privacy is preserved. Scorpios have subtle, crafty fingers but never forget that they are attached to an iron first of power. People tend to love them or hate them; either way Scorpios are always a force to be reckoned with. |

Sagittarius![]() Sagittarians are known for their broad vision, tolerant attitude, freedom-loving philosophical air, and generally jovial spirits. These recognisable traits all stem from the influence of their planetary ruler: the expansive and magnanimous Jupiter; source of hope, optimism, confidence and generosity. Jupiter tends to appreciate abundance; the dictum 'less is more' doesn't make much sense in his realm - better to have plenty and let a little go to waste. Sagittarians have a gift for enlarging all that they embrace and throw their energies into. No sign creates a better publicist. Few can so easily take a minor matter and through their enthusiasm make it seem so all-important. Sagittarian hearts and spirits are big; their outlook is liberal and forgiving; their style is colourful and noisy; their passion for life contagious. The upwards shooting centaur aims for the higher picture and keeps its eyes fixed to the distant horizon. Sagittarians are always planning for the future, thinking about a bigger tomorrow, and thus they tend not to worry about the here and now. They are blessed with fine intuition but can suffer through dismissing critical analysis as someone else's negative outlook; sanguine in the conviction that 'all will work out well in the end'. Sagittarians don't work well with details, and whilst known for being intrinsically candid, they can't help distorting everything towards a brighter light, especially if it embroiders in a bit more colour and interest. Such buoyancy of spirit often attracts a positive response, but like all the fire signs Sagittarians need to be wary of ignoring the voice of caution. Downfalls that affect this sign arise from taking on too much; becoming so enraptured in their own enthusiasm that they act without foresight; and pursuing a vision that exceeds the limits of reality. But even in suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune the Sagittarian copes better than most. Being a mutable sign all change is viewed as an opportunity for stimulation and renewed motivation. This is a sign that rarely recognises restrictions and certainly doesn't approve of limitations. Sagittarians adopt a 'live and let live' philosophy that recoils from narrow mindedness. They have a natural dislike of all things 'prim and proper' and will laugh in the face of supercilious morality. There's a 'rough and ready' element to this sign and one of its most noticeable features is a forthright attitude and a 'take me as you find me' approach. Pomposity and civil niceties fail to impress, as does anything that smacks of being superficially correct but inherently insincere. Sagittarian Mark Twain typifies the penchant for undermining all that is ostentatious with humour, frank observation and unnerving candour - just when everyone seems willing to take flight into collective self-congratulation and pretentiousness, the Sagittarian is there, ready to burst the hollow bubble with a painfully incisive reminder of the truth. This is honesty Sagittarian style - frank, blunt, and disquietingly valid. Sagittarians prize themselves on their reputation for sincerity and lenience. There is however, another side to the sign, a belligerent foundation that is rarely acknowledged but ever present. Sagittarians are driven by a Mars-like quality and they have a propensity to rush out with their energies, aggressively pursuing their own ends. It's well known that Sagittarians tend to exaggerate stories to their own advantage, and they've certainly managed to do this with their mythological emblem, the centaur. They would have us all believe that gentle, healing, self-sacrificing Chiron was placed in the stars to symbolise all that the Sagittarian represents. Honoured for his unselfishness - he had no equal when it came to performing acts of kindness - Sagittarians have unashamedly claimed this motif of exceptional goodness and wisdom as their own. But Sagittarians can never be trusted with the details. Centaurus, the Southern Centaur, is the constellation figure that pays tribute to Chiron. Fierce and competitive Sagittarius faces him from the other side of Scorpio, marked out by the Babylonians long before the Greeks traced their nobler hero in the sky. Chiron was remarkable, not because he symbolised typical centaur-like qualities, but because he alone distanced himself from their wild and savage, lustful drunken ways. The reality is that the centaur race is marked in myth as particularly war like and fierce. The Mesopotamians, who introduced the constellation Sagittarius and defined it as a centaur,[1] represented it as twin headed with a human head facing forward and an animal head facing back, imagery which later adapted into the presence of a cloak flying behind the head of the constellation figure. The shadowing animal face reminds us that whilst the Sagittarian might strive towards humane development, an underlying bestial energy exists, capable of spontaneous brutality when the bounds of reason are not consciously applied. Cuneiform inscriptions refer to Sagittarius as 'The Strong One', the 'Giant King of War' and mention it as under the guardianship of Nergal, whom the Mesopotamians identified with Mars. [2] Although later astrologers sanitised the more aggressive and blatantly phallic symbolism evident in ancient sources, we still encounter classical astrologers referring to the sign's "threatening aspect" [3] and medieval references to the "Dreadful Sagittary", such as that found in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida [4] Historically, the sign stands as an emblem for the invincible courage and fervent valour of Mars, tempered only by the benevolence and wisdom of Jupiter. King Steven who usurped the English throne in 1135 carried the centaur as his heraldic symbol for that reason. Insight into how the centaur myth originated offers an interesting reflection on its early basis. Evolutionists have reasoned that it took many thousands of years for the horse to develop into a creature large enough to be ridden by man. It is estimated that this monumental event occurred sometime around 3000-2000 BC. The first and most effective race to use the horse in battle was the Scythians, skilled archers who took full advantage of its speed and height to become a race beheld in terror and awe. It is claimed that when the Greeks first saw the Scythians they believed the horse and rider to be one, giving rise to imaginative and fear-inspired tales of the war-like centaur. [5] To deny the fiercer aspects of the sign's symbolism is to deny its very basis. Traditional texts leave no doubt as to the integral influence of its martial roots, yet modern authors have masked it as an extremity of the effusive and sometimes vociferous influence of Jupiter. Either way, Sagittarians are undoubtedly choleric in their temperament. Known for their exuberance and recognised as unafraid to take a risk or square up to a confrontation, given any fair excuse to go on the offensive, this is not a sign to hesitate or pause. The volatile influence of Mars can set their fiery light ablaze, and quite frankly no one enjoys a good all out scrap or verbal assault, no holds barred, like a Sagittarian does. Nor are many as quick to forgive and forget once the enflamed moment has passed. Sagittarius brings it all out in the open and up to the surface. There is no lingering malice or unexpressed resentment lurking among the ulterior motives of this sign. The temptation to deal with potential confrontation, even before it can rightfully be described as a valid problem, is much too strong and persuasive. Thus we see the basis for the complaint that Sagittarians lack tact and discretion. Their frankness and frequently ill-considered 'brutal honesty' is often abrasive to others, who might normally expect a little more restraint and delicacy before sensitive matters are subjected to the sledge hammer of public appraisal. And that calls into question this whole issue about Sagittarius being a sign you can trust. Candour, openness, bringing issues to a level where they can be explored and resolved is very much a key element of the Sagittarian temperament. But whether you can trust them to keep a confidence is another matter. This is not a sign to divulge your darkest secrets to; Sagittarians want to act, to change things, to take full responsibility for alleviating your problems and involving themselves on your behalf. It's an admirable trait in many respects, but not one you'll appreciate when all you wanted was to gain some furtive advice so you could resolve the matter discreetly and in your own good time. Unsurprisingly, the brightest stars of the constellation Sagittarius are said to bestow an influence akin to Jupiter and Mars combined, and the same must be said of the planetary energies that animate this zodiac sign. There is a constant need for challenge, stimulation and freedom of expression and movement. This can produce restlessness in relationships and a lack of constant commitment in professions that call for mundane, steady application. The Sagittarian has a well reputed love of travel and an urge for exploration that calls for adventure and space - physically, intellectually and emotionally. They are 'people' people, and crowds adore them, but they make heavy demands on personal relationships. 'Stability' is a restriction, 'commitment' is a limitation; unless other factors dominate in the horoscope a Sagittarian generally has a hard time closing down all the potential opportunities that exist in being loose and fancy free. Even so, they pride themselves on having a firm moral basis and try to act with integrity. Although naturally flirty and attention-seeking, there is little reason to suspect them of being anything other than they admit they are. Once dedicated to a long-term partnership they will battle against the obstacles and make every endeavour to fulfil their promises. An ideal partner would be stable and quietly confident, unafraid to let them feel liberated in lifestyle and conduct. Possessiveness is abhorrent to them, jealousy dampens their spirits, and emotional confinement inevitably leads to rebellion. In career matters, Sagittarians come into their own in creative fields, especially where the value of open expression and life experience are fully appreciated. They are better at working with people than with abstract concepts, so areas such as teaching, counselling, and entertaining are particularly well suited. There is a constant striving towards enlargement that fuels their ambitions, and typically Sagittarians have an instinct for recognising opportunities and a determination to make the most of them - even if this involves some risk of loss. Their robust spirit and grand-scale vision helps to guarantee success, but it would be wrong to think of Sagittarius as a sign that naturally gravitates towards the top and stays there: Sagittarians are much better known for engaging in the undulating adventure of life: living to the full, taking gambles, riding the ups and downs, and dicing with the limits of possibility. Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg are two examples of Sagittarians who fully projected their vision, exceeding all realistic expectations. The singer Tina Turner captures another quality through exuberant and explosive performances that fill the stage with presence. Typically a lover of sport, the real issue for the Sagittarian is the need to react spontaneously and intuitively; to project the energies outwards and upwards. An instinct for acting first and thinking later necessarily brings inconstancy and risk, but the indefatigable Sagittarian is always 'in there', playing the game, positioning themselves at the very heart of where the action is. |

Capricorn![]() Capricorns live by the steadying hand of their planetary ruler, Saturn. Those born under this sign are noted for being patient, prudent, determined, reliable and disciplined. Saturn brings a constricting influence and yet Capricorns are characterised by a life-long striving towards accomplishment. The sign is known as the most ambitious of the zodiac, driven to climb, yet constantly checked by the pressure of a planet whose nature is to hold back and restrain. As a life-pattern this can result in many crosses to be borne, and Capricorns who have yet to discover their self-worth often feel rather cheated in the gifts that accompany their lot. The tale of Capricorn is that its natives suffer in youth and profit in maturity and old age. Only with the benefit of hindsight can they fully appreciate the process which leads them towards resilience and achievement. The goat is a creature born to tread the rocky and inhospitable path that leads to the mountain heights. Those that stay the course acquire a strength that has been cultivated slowly, deliberately and firmly, their position solidified and their wisdom forged through the hard experience of steadily pursuing their objectives against adversities and obstacles. Sadly, many descriptions of Capricorn dwell too heavily upon the harsher aspects of Saturn as offering a limiting, self-depreciating and pessimistic outlook. Saturn is a planet of realism with a controlled release of energy which does mark the Capricorn as apparently lacking in creative sparkle and exuberant vivacity. As the Sun enters the sign associated with mid-winter, its power is low and the solar qualities of light, warmth, enthusiasm and brilliance struggle to emerge in recognisable ego traits and personality features. Yet the qualities exist, submerged deep within the character. The fire that animates the Capricorn's spirits is gestating and self-contained, but not to be taken lightly. The Romans celebrated the Sun's ingress into Capricorn as Saturnalia, a festival which welcomed back the return of the Sun's power after the shortest day of the year. The emphasis was on renewal of strength, fertility, and power that originates from the depths of being. As the cardinal earth sign Capricorn portrays the enduring and irrepressible spirit of nature. There is a productive fecundity inherent in the symbolism of the goat-fish that is dismissed too lightly if we fail to explore the deeper meanings of this complex ancient symbol. Many astrologers consider Capricorn to be the most enigmatic and mysterious sign of the zodiac. All of the cardinal signs indicate seats of power and in a creature with the forelimbs of a goat attached to the tail of a fish, the abyss of the ocean is combined with mountainous terrain. This represents a 'cross of matter' between the psyche and its manifestation in the material, drawing the soul out of its collective stupor to confront the challenges of reality and individualism. The ocean, besides symbolising primordial roots, relates to instinctive wisdom, secrets, and knowledge that lies buried within the depths of consciousness. Capricorn, bearing only the tail of an aquatic creature, keeps a head that is free from impressionable thought - at a rational level Capricorns are affected only by what they can define through logic and reasoned assessment, but unconsciously, spiritually and emotionally they draw from the deep. This is a sign that is anything but shallow and superficial; beneath the Capricorn's cool, reserved and calculating exterior lies a profound resource of emotional strength, psychic resilience and earthy endurance. The recognisable character traits of the sign reveal compulsion, dedication and perseverance in its aims and interests. Capricorns may not impress others by their motivation but neither do they seek the easy approval or widespread attention of others. Their ambitions - in relationships, career and personal growth - are rooted in an 'inner' motivation that runs too deep to be easily shaken. Their strengths (and their faults) are based upon the qualities of stamina, fortitude, staying power and survival. Some see the Capricorn's scaly tail as that of the sea-serpent, a creature of 'old knowledge', wise in matters of the occult and offering a potential for understanding beyond limited, earthly experience. Capricorns are known for being 'older than their years' and those who take up the study of mysteries and traditions gravitate towards a masterly knowledge of their craft just as the business minded Capricorn will gravitate towards the managerial position. Mastery and power are the understated keywords of this sign. Even the earthy aspect of the goat is frequently underestimated in its potential for symbolising hidden reserves of strength. There is a feature of the goat that deserves special attention in our understanding of this sign. The name 'Capricorn' draws our attention to it and comes from the Latin caper ('goat') and cornu ('horn') - literally 'the Goat's horn'. In the ancient world horns were symbols of royalty, strength and power, as well as fertility and abundance. Cornucopia in mythology was the goat Amalthea who nourished the infant Jupiter with her milk, though the term remains in use today as the 'copious horn' or 'horn of plenty' which symbolises prosperity and growth. The goat is one of the three horned creatures in the zodiac; these were also the creatures celebrated in ancient religious festivals and used in sacrifice to draw power from the gods. The use of the goat as a 'scapegoat' in the biblical ritual of Atonement (see the star lore of Capricorn) has led to goat deities accumulating a reputation as icons of evil occult powers rather than the neutral symbols of earthly fertility and focused power that was implicit in the older customs. J.E. Circlot, in his Dictionary of Symbols, includes an interesting passage on the symbolism of horns as related by the three creatures of the zodiac; the coiled horns of Aries, the inwardly curved horns of Taurus, and the upwardly pointed horns of Capricorn signifying elevation, power and prestige. He notes that in Egyptian hieroglyphics, horns signify what is above the head and by extension 'to open up a path for oneself'. Horns then, are similar to halos and crowns in denoting princely wisdom and illumination. The theme is repeated in ancient depictions of the sign that replace the horned fore-creature with that of a man but retain the imagery of the crown. In later art we find depictions of Moses bearing horns after his descent from the mountain, indicating the radiance of light and wisdom emitted from his head after the divine contact. Elsewhere horns have adorned battle-helmets since prehistoric times in an attempt to capitalise upon their expression of strength, power and force. Jung recognised the horn as a powerful symbol for fertility and dualism, being both masculine - by its phallic and penetrating shape - and feminine - by its receptive, cup like qualities. The goat's horn thus stands as a representation of the elemental energies of the earth, the prime matter from which the alchemical process begins its quest for the transformation of gold. Alchemists have often related 'prima mater' with lead, the metal of Saturn; though it was also frequently associated with the unconscious and thought to come from the mountains where 'all things are one'. The Rosarium terms prima mater the 'root of itself', being the first principle that separates reason from chaos. Many elements in the symbolism of Capricorn make this one of the most interesting signs in terms of the spiritual undertones conveyed by its imagery. In the ancient world Capricorn denoted a noble, kingly wisdom and earth power associated with those who are 'older and wiser'. In Babylonian mythology it is linked with Ea, 'antelope of the ocean' who brought knowledge and wisdom to mankind and was never subject to fits of emotional disturbance or angry wrath, unlike the other early gods. Drawing from his heritage, Capricorn is the caricature of the wise old sage, the one who has the experience to understand human emotional weakness but enough mastery and control over his 'self' to prevent reason being affected by it. Rudyard Kipling was a Capricorn, and his famous poem 'If' reads like the Bible of Capricornian logic in how to develop true strength as an individual - never by trusting to luck, never by aiming to explode upon the world or seeking glory and hopeful expectation, but only through enduring hardship and refusing to be beaten by it, by patient acceptance that the wheel must spin full term, and by tolerance of the hurt that others will inevitably cast your way. In our modern world Capricorn relates to those who manage and lead in all walks of life, from the Capricorn mother, who governs her household with the firm hand of structure and teaches her children that they should restrain their urge for short term gratification and invest in a 'reputable' future; the Capricorn business manager who may seem somewhat unapproachable but is always in control of his responsibilities, and the Capricorn lover who seeks long-term stability over spontaneity and amorous excitement. Capricorns who have risen to fame have generally done so by taking the hard route, gathering respect for their fortitude, resistance and application. Capricorns don't seek fame for fame's sake, are generally uncomfortable in the public eye, and expect to keep their private life private. Theirs is not a 'what you see is what you get' mentality and all Capricorn professionals draw clear boundaries between that made available for public appraisal and the personal self which is never given up to free and open scrutiny. Capricorns are often accused of being motivated by the acquisition of material comforts and financial security. An important keyword here is respect - Capricorns expect to be treated with respect and are sensitive to taking offence when it is lacking. For many this entails living the traditional 'respectable' lifestyle and drawing around them the material trappings of respectability. Even the lesser off Capricorn can't help but see himself as having a position to hold and may care greatly about 'what the neighbours say' to the exasperation of more liberal or free spirited partners. Above all Capricorn is a conservative sign, rooted in conventional morality and bearing a great deference for history and tradition. This is not the sign of the innovator but the preserver, not the gambler but the investor, often willing to take a risk but only where it has been carefully calculated and measured by reason. Neither do Capricorns 'live for the moment' since their personality is defined by an awareness of time and the ever-present need to safeguard the future. Relationships can be the source of considerable pain unless the right circumstances are met. Capricorns have little instinctive knowledge of how to play the dating game and are too earnest with their emotions to respond to light hearted flirtation with carefree abandon. They can suffer through shyness and are seldom at ease displaying affection. Yet Capricorn is a strongly sexual sign - the goat's horn is a symbol of male virility - and their fixed emotions can cause them to remain locked in grief and disappointment if they fail to win the object of their affection. Within relationships they have a strong sense of duty and commitment. This will be highly satisfactory to some but others may perceive it as unnecessarily restrictive and oppressive. Afflicted, the sign can show a tendency towards control and jealousy. The faults of the Capricorn are always more apparent to those who fall into the opposing personality types. As in all the sunsign faults they arise from a negative appreciation of their strengths. Some may feel that they lack spontaneity and creativity and thus perceive them as boring and uninspiring. Others will view their emotional control as hard and unfeeling, regarding them as unresponsive to their moods and undemonstrative in romantic affairs. Even those that appreciate their reasoned outlook and strategic approach to problems can be disparaged by their composed response, regarding them as demoralising and unnecessarily rigid or pessimistic in outlook. All young people can benefit from the guidance of a Capricorn, although most will find their lessons on the need for patience frustrating. |

Aquarius![]() The symbolic emblem of Aquarius is the water bearer, who kneels as he pours forth his offering of water in an act of modest service. Although classified as an air sign according to its elemental qualities, Aquarius is in many ways the forgotten 'water sign', with its name simply meaning 'related to water', and much of its symbolic signification emerging from the water bearer's act of libation. But the free flowing water-symbolism of Aquarius bears no relation to the heavily pregnant ocean of the psyche as portrayed by the signs of the water triplicity; for in libation the Aquarian seeks only to cleanse, illuminate and purify. The ancients envisioned the floods that accompanied the sign's culmination and seasonal passage as periods of refreshment, when the land, newly baptised, was cleansed of sin. The month of February is so-named in honour of the ceremonies of purification that were held during the Sun's passage through Aquarius (Latin: Februa = to purify + arius = pertaining to), with society's attention turned to ritualistic purification of the home, body and soul. In being cleansed, we are made new again, and classical symbolism also captures the element of youth and innocence by identifying the waterbearer as Ganymede, the young boy whose grace and beauty so captivated the heart of Zeus that he stole him away to replace Hebes, the goddess of youth, as his cup bearer. Thus the imagery of Aquarius dwells upon the cleansing power of water to offer the representation of youth, innocence and purity. Since the elemental division of the zodiac attributes the four primary laws of physics - light, gravity, energy and motion - to the elements of air, earth, fire and water respectively, Aquarius, as an air sign, also signifies light and its natural extension, clarity, through which the sign emphasises leanings towards visibly reasoned logic and lucid expression. Although the act of offering the libation demonstrates the Aquarian need to be of service to others, it also illustrates the active condition of extending out to others what is contained within oneself - the principle of communication by which we identify Aquarians as the transmitters of knowledge. With the noble virtues of modesty and humility fundamental to this sign, Aquarians often appear unassuming and indifferent to attention, yet they are fiercely independent in matters of mind and spirit. They rarely have a hidden agenda and their tendency towards clear-thinking and independent analysis make it almost impossible to beguile them into a position of prejudice. Neither do they take kindly to attempts to pull the wool over their eyes, having no hesitation in speaking out against the common drift wherever belief and assumption tips the scales against logic and fact. The tendency towards 'detachment' runs like a thread through many of this sign's notable characteristics. On the one hand it gives a remarkable capacity for self-recognition and a crystal-clear reception of universal intelligence. At a spiritual level, it allows pure vision and penetrating perception. On the other, such self-reliant understanding inclines the Aquarian away from the impressions of others, often making them often appear to be a little 'different' and apart from their community. The Aquarian spirit is often characterised by progressive thinking because of their ability to lie comfortably at odds with the norm. On a baser level however, it can lead to a stubborn and rigid maintenance of personal opinion that resists the benefits of learning from others. As a fixed sign, Aquarius offers stability and resistance, but problems can arise wherever wilfulness overrides the basic instinct towards humanitarian service, leading to inflexibility and repression of the spirit. When rightfully employed as a vehicle for free-flowing thought, the principle of fixity applied to air can result in marked powers of concentration and application, and an uncompromising response to mental challenge. Saturn's traditional rulership of Aquarius further colours this sign with the qualities of detachment, objectivity and restraint. In astrological philosophy, the Sun and Saturn are conceived as enemies, neither able to express itself fully within the other's sign of dignity. The Sun craves attention and when the planetary energies are drawn though the Sun it centres them firmly upon the self. Hence the Sun is said to be 'in detriment' in Aquarius, where the personal ego is subjugated in favour of egalitarian concepts and far-ranging humanitarian concerns. The Aquarian perspective is drawn from a broad angle, and places the vision of the wider perspective above that which it sees from a position of self interest. The spirit of Aquarius is to look beyond the immediate and self-centred, to nurture the interests of progress for collective society and humanity as a whole. Aquarians are often recognised as social idealists, locked into a quest to pursue their guiding principles of truth, justice, democracy, universal harmony and brotherhood of man. Calm objectivity combined with idealistic vision results in a genuine interest for scientific ingenuity and a natural instinct for fair-mindedness. Known for being one of the most rational and humane signs of the zodiac, Aquarius, in its positive expression, is the archetype for civility, tact, reasoned logic, moderate behaviour and all-round good manners. Traditional sources refer to it as a 'sanguine sign', as all the air signs are, indicating that it is underwritten by healthy attributes of grace, charm and attractiveness, and has no leanings towards crude, violent or unpleasant extremes. Since they tend towards a position of balance, Aquarians are generally seen as popular, polite and sociable members of society. They offer harmonising influences upon groups, especially with their penchant for bringing cool reason to heated debates and thus steering attention away from personal and emotional trysts to communal and intellectual problems that concern and unite us all. Like all air signs, Aquarians carry the double-edged gift of being able to detach their reason from their emotions, allowing them to rationalise their feelings and override base instincts or lustful passions. This sign has a natural disposition towards assessing everything through reason, so that even where there is an understanding of emotional drives, it is a reasoned understanding, such as one derived from a study of emotional behaviour. An Aquarian may lack the empathetic understanding of those who draw from painful personal experience, but their viewpoint is reliably impartial and unbiased, motivated along a course of action that seeks to be fair and logical. The problematic side to this quality is that Aquarians often remain slightly detached from deeply emotional experiences, feeling ill-at-ease with intimacy and embarrassed or uncomfortable when they are expected to demonstrate enthused familiarity. In close personal relationships they can seem aloof, dispassionate and stand-offish, particularly to those whose expectations are towards ardent infatuations requiring heavy emotional investment. New lovers are often disappointed to find that the freely expressed charm that radiates in social settings and early acquaintance remains static in intimacy and doesn't develop into passionate expressions of romantic obsession for a love that transcends all reason and boundaries. Thus the Aquarian is often berated for being emotionally 'cool'. Ancient sources alluded to this element of frigidity by categorising the sign as 'slightly barren' in matters of fertility, and drawing pre-pubescent youth or sexless beings into its symbolic expression. Recent astrologers have made much of 'brotherhood of man' issues to suggest that the sign is relevant in portraying homosexuality, noting that the Ganymede myth is the first insinuation to homosexual love in Greek literature. The suggestion, however, is poorly supported by traditional astrological texts and appears to be a modern contortion of a more reliable Aquarian principle, which is simply that innocence, purity, idealistic love, discretion and moderation are valued above the release of unrestrained passion and unbridled desire; and that the perceived boundaries of gender, race and religion mean very little to an Aquarian, who instinctively responds to intellectual compatibility and searches for soul mates in a place where minds can meet. The natural inclination towards logic and progressive ideas sets the Aquarian apart for potential to excel in the worlds of teaching, media, philosophy, science and law. The sign is often, very fairly, described as the mark of the scientific innovator, though this should not be taken as suggesting there is any lack of respect for the stability of tradition. Even the most pioneering Aquarian requires a structured framework to support the development of their ideas and draws cohesion from established principles. Aquarius demonstrates a balanced appreciation between the old and the new, a rare paradoxical virtue that allows them to span social and intellectual divisions with ease. Any career path that lies within fields of communication, the engineering of structures (social, personal, scientific, architectural or design), or offers scope for objective re-evaluation, assessment and research is ideal. Aquarians can excel within the arts, but do so best where their imagination is channelled into structure and definition. The modern association between Aquarius and Uranus has given this sign an exaggerated reputation for being rebellious, anti-social, perverse, eccentric and emotionally unstable. All of these negative forms of behaviour arise as extreme manifestations in individuals that have yet to find their centre. Anyone who is naturally inclined to care about the interests of social welfare will face their shadow in a world of political frustration where they are confronted with the mirror of their own anger and disappointment. Uranus sits comfortably within the theme of Aquarius in issues of detachment and mental separation, but the intrinsically destructive nature of that planet undermines the fact that Aquarius is regarded as a fortunate sign that rarely offers hostile conditions unless the planets within it are afflicted and heavily debilitated. Whilst some degree of separation from the group is a natural and healthy Aquarian trait, social isolation is not. Primarily this sign works best when supporting well-reasoned theoretical reform rather than violent civil disruption, leaving aggression aside in favour of its polished weapons of diplomacy, logic and tactful gathering of public support. |

Pisces![]() Pisces represents two fishes swimming in opposite directions, bound by a cord. The dualism implicit in its symbolism is a weakening principle, because the fishes strain against each other rather than support each other's motion. This adds an element of vacillation to the way a Piscean thinks and acts, but it also suggests the ability to receive influences from multiple sources which, whilst tending to undermine self-will, gives the capacity for rounded awareness and instinctive understanding of how gain in one area results from loss in another. As such a trait suggests, Pisceans are not known for being quick and decisive problem solvers. They are apt to see everything as a dilemma, riddled with numerous options and shades of possibility. A complex and idealistic sign, Pisces sets a high store on conscience and consequence, with the fear of causing upset to others often gaining the upper hand over the desire to assert one's own interests. Highly sensitive and impressionable, Pisceans are either commended for their compassionate humility and sympathetic consideration, or berated for being weak-willed, gullible and lacking in focus. Kindness, trust and a 'willingness to believe' has contributed to Pisces' reputation as one of the most spiritual signs of the zodiac. This is not some modern derivation from the attributes of Neptune; its ancient history is riddled with allegiance to spiritual principles, and the symbol for fishes is often taken as an icon for churches and priests, predating the sign's traditional connection with Jupiter, (itself a significator for priests and religious matters); and the adoption of the sign of the fish by Christianity, where it is seen as an emblem for gentility, peace and denial of the ego in favour of the collective's needs. The notion of meekness arises from the creature's easy representation of the pacifist - the fish is not an aggressive animal and has no natural defences except its fluid movement, coupled with an instinct to swim away from trouble. Its astrological reputation acknowledges the noble attributes of personal sacrifice and resolution to suffering without retribution, but it also recognises that human beings seldom live up to highest principles - timidity often appearing at a lower scale under the guise of cowardice, avoidance of personal responsibility or, as Lilly would have it, 'idle effeminacy' … 'representing a party of no action'.* Pisceans certainly don't fit comfortably in the role of challenging hero who rushes headlong into battle. Their strength is borne from reflection, consideration, and resistance to actions that perpetuate pain. But pacifism only represents one element of Pisces' spiritual reputation. A deeper significance lies in the fact that the fish is a creature of the ocean, which since ancient times has been taken as the symbolic realm of emotional and spiritual energy that lies beneath physical existence, where all is connected and nothing moves without creating a tide of motion that pulls or pushes against another. The sea as the magna mater, the primary source, signifies the boundless essence of soulful creativity and elemental life force from which everything emerges and eventually returns. Fishes, as intrinsic parts of this fertile yet deeply mysterious realm, were regarded as sacred representations of the soul and the spiritual connection that animates society. Being natives of the world of water, Pisceans are highly responsive to their environment, easily influenced by the moods and expectations of others. The element of water signifies dissolution of personal barriers that exist to detach us from the physical pain and emotional suffering of others. Lacking the hardened shell of Cancer and Scorpio, Pisces has least resistance amongst the water-signs to surrounding impressions, making them almost as responsive to excitement, fear, anticipation, joy, hurt and laughter originated from without as that generated from within. If they see tears they will cry, if they see a smile they will smile back; no other sign is so prone to the infectious nature of human emotion. The 'boundless ocean' represents a very open and fluid environment where instincts reign. Changeable and unpredictable, it lacks structure, control and conformity. So too the Piscean finds it hard to cope with discipline, routine and order. Their emotional capacity gives a strong imagination that often finds expression through escapist tendencies or dreamy, hopeful visions. Capable of great inspiration and idealism, they are often accused of lacking realism and being too trusting in the conviction that the power of belief, hope, or love can transcend all bounds and borders. Jupiter, as the traditional ruler of the sign, promotes the urge for freedom from restraint and mundane obligations. But Jupiter struggles to find conscious direction in Pisces, where the emphasis falls upon faith over reason, and freedom of the soul through denial of earthly shackles. Unless a proclivity for self-imposed structure and regulation are suggested by more earthy qualities in the chart, Pisces often wastes its potential by failing to give lasting definition to its latent creativity. It will 'go with the flow' and when interest or energy levels drop, so too does application. Pisceans are great starters of projects and initiators of ideas, but they lack the sustained energy that is required to fulfil many of their long term objectives. The same is suggested by Pisces' highly fertile reputation. Pisces and Jupiter are both prime significators for fruitfulness, easy conception, an abundance of offspring, creativity and ideas. Whilst offering a blessing for pregnancy matters, multitudinous fecundity suggests problems through being too easily impressed, too quickly receptive to a host of potentials - to the detriment of the one worthy project that demands singular attention. As the fish spawns numerous eggs, Pisceans are never short of creative possibilities to explore and develop. Most will admit that they abound with inspirational ideas and imaginative thoughts, but they lose motivation once projects begin to require more mundane maintenance than creative investment. This can present itself as restlessness and unreliability. Most professional Pisceans need to find a career path that allows for flexibility and a constant exploration of new interests and emotional stimulation. They excel in design and development, but suffer in management and administration. Their fields are the arts and the caring professions, where they can fulfil their urge to nurse, heal or soothe, or absorb and reflect the power of the psyche. Although they may be unreliable in time-keeping, often best when working to their own agendas or allowed flexible hours, once roused to action they will give their all, because everything they do is invested with feeling and emotion. The modern rulership of Neptune over the sign demonstrates the close affinity that exists between Pisces' soft and subtle nature and the observable effects of this nebulous outer planet. Neptune's principle is dissolution into collectiveness. Although often marvelled as a planet of great spiritual mysticism, mundane astrology accepts that part of its influence is to weaken vital force and strive towards communism, where all are equalled, segregations and barriers are broken down and no one shines brighter than the rest. Neptune can bring depression and Pisceans are known for having low vitality which makes them easy prey to lethargy. Their temperament is defined as phlegmatic, which is associated with delicate constitutions, pale complexions and inertia. The poor generation of heat describes the sign as one that is slow to rouse to temper, but easily susceptible to emotional hurt. Other negative Piscean traits include carelessness, inattention to details, manipulation, and an easy dependence upon drugs, alcohol, and artificial stimulants. Part of the latter problem is due to a casual disregard for regulation and self-imposed limitation, the rest is due to their extreme sensitivity which makes them readily responsive to addictive substances. The reputation for manipulation arises less as a result of an inclination towards dishonesty, but as reluctance to deal directly with uncomfortable issues that feel too painful and distressing to tackle head-on. Instead the Piscean will introduce a softening principle, distorting little realities so that the truth seems easier to swallow. Pisceans are rarely motivated by pure self-interest but they are easily distracted, effortlessly led, and subject to the powerful temptation of aroused emotion. Venus has played an important part in the ancient myths surrounding the constellation Pisces and is considered exalted in this sign because its delicate and tender nature is so responsive to romanticised visions of love and attraction. Pisces needs a soul mate, and they take no greater pleasure than when sacrificing everything for that which they find attractive and beautiful. Unfortunately, Pisces is not a sign of clear and rational vision. When they fall in love they often, quite literally, fall into an abyss of intense confusion and distorted reality that allows no room for critical reasoning. Pisceans can make the most generous, open and tender-hearted lovers but they can suffer in relationships, either by clinging to false dreams that bear no basis in actuality, or through the inability to deal with the practical rules of engagement that remain in relationships once the initial blush of romantic sensation has faded. The modern world, with its message that anyone can have anything they want so long as they demand it aggressively enough, take no prisoners and impress their will firmly upon everyone else, can be a hard and hostile environment for the gentle, non-confrontational Piscean. But this sign has been blessed with great intuition and a deep spiritual source from which to draw calm resolution. The cord that binds the two opposing fishes shows that although they are open to a wide range of emotions and psychic impressions, they are forever tied to the process of centring themselves and bringing equilibrium to their own lives, and those of others around them. |
