New Conure Owner - Ritz!
Posted by Sanchez (Member) at Feb 6 2012, 04:21 PM. 9 comments
Hello all!
I picked up a six month old Sun Conure this weekend
I had been reading about conures for about a month and planning the steps towards getting one before Ritz came into our lives (me and the girlfriend).
So I had looked around and found a local breeder that raised Green Cheeks. I originally wanted a sun because of the vibrant colors but when I was told how loud they were I changed to wanting a GCC. He breeds standard green cheeks and 'pineapples'. So after a while of thinking about it we started to prepare. We went to PETCO to get some toys and saw a little Sunny there. His name was Ritz and he was born on my girlfriend's birthday, but 25 years later!
We played with him through the cage for a while, he would follow us wherever we went and even climb down from the top where he was hanging upside down when we walked up to his enclosure. We didn't really think anything of it at first, then we went back again to get some zuprem pellets and Ritz was still there. I asked if we could hold him and they said that none of the bird experts were in so they didn't want to take him out. A few days later we went to visit him again to see if we could interact with him to get an idea of a conure's temperament more up close. He was super sweet, stepped right up, didn't screech or anything. The lady there told me that they handle the birds daily and that Ritz was the store's favorite bird.
The next day I talked with the girlfriend about him and thought about it long and hard. I asked people on forums about PETCO birds, thought about the possibilites that come along with getting a pet-store bird vs. a breeder bird, but all in all he was very loved, had been there 3.5 months, so shortly after he was weaned he started getting human attention and he looked to be in great shape. We went and got a cage, some toys and supplies from a cheaper mom+pop pet store and got them all set up at home. We went to pick up Ritz and the lady took him away for a weighing and to get the paperwork. Not 2 minutes later, three ladies walked back, one of whom had Ritz on her shoulder, the other two were crying. When the original lady, Rhonda took him back for weighing I guess two of the groomers there found out he was leaving. They were so sad to see him go it really broke my heart, but they were happy that he was going to a good home.
So we've had him three days now (she's at home playing with him while I'm at work today while he gets used to the house) and he's been totally awesome! He likes to shriek when we leave the room, but after his first call he gets over it and starts playing with his toys or foraging.
At PETCO he was eating a seed mix and weighed in at 110g, which is a little on the chubby side, right? I'm in the process of getting him to eat zuprem pellets though. I feed him two tablespoons of seed mix minus the sunflower seeds, those are treats now in the morning and he has a bowl of zuprem pellets available to him all day if he wants it. He's started showing interest in them already
In the evening, he gets fresh fruits and veggies. Last night he had a nice salad with some broccoli tops, red bell peppers, a couple blueberries and some carrots. We'll give him small treats such as a little piece of apple or some millet throughout the day after he steps up. We're trying to associate the phrase with stepping onto a finger or perch. In his cage, he has some shredders, a rope swing, a happy hut which he hasn't discovered yet, and some bell toys along with food and water.
So far am I being a good dad?
Anyway, enough words, on to the pictures!

In the last picture, he wore himself out climbing all over my head and nibbling on my ears, so adorable. He fell asleep bundled up in his baby blanket

I introduced myself on the other board. My name is Denice and this is my
baby boy Simon who is about 14 weeks old. He is a yellow sided green cheek.
I have enjoyed looking at all the pictures on this site, I do not know how you
all can tell them apart. some of them look so similar to me.
I love this little guy who is going to teach me to be a good bird owner I hope!
There is one one other bird that I would love to have one day and that is
The Queen of Bavaria Conure (Golden Conure) but I want to learn for a couple
years with this guy first.

Hi everybody! I'm a new member so I decided to introduce my flock. First off, I have two conures, Juni and Curious. Here are some pics.
Juni is a 1 and a half year old mitred and the spunkiest living thing on earth!

Curious is a shy but curious yellow sided green cheek. He's less than a year old.

I also have a yellow nape amazon named Tico, 4 cockatiels, Cinnamon, Sugar, Pearl, and Faith, and two budgies, Sally and Tulip.

RARE! Skippie Ruby Precious. Clutch #4
Posted by LuvMyParrots (Member) at Jan 23 2012, 10:14 AM. 3 comments
Hi Everyone
I'm very excited about our clutch #4.
What makes this so unique, is Skippie and Ruby produced a cinnamon GCC in clutch #3
Which Skippie named "Precious".. They did not kick her out of the nest. The 3 of them
get along very well. It's Very Rare for siblings to particiapte with new hatchlings, in captivity.
Mating season is here again..We believe Skippie and Ruby have been conditioning
Precious to help out with the new clutch..She takes very good care of mama.. Precious
feeds & preens Mama, also Skippie and Precious get along very well.
Oh, I forgot to mention WE Co-Parent. We get to feed the babies 3 feedings per day..
My Skippie and Ruby are so spoiled, that they actually yell "Skippie" meaning my husband..
to get up and Feed the babies in the morning.. We are trained very well
not only do we hand feed the babies, but the parents enjoy the syringe as well.
Ruby has been getting hand fed, since started laying these eggs..
I'm posting a video of this wonderful experience, for all of the conure lovers..
I also have videos on youtube .. It's from a previous clutch..Skippie is Preening his babies..
on the dining room table.. It's an example of Trust we have with our parrots..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCocat7EaAE
1 Other Point I'd like to mention here is Ruby laid 7 eggs, however she is sitting on 8 eggs
1 of them is a cockatiel egg..I hope it hatches.. We will see if they foster this baby,
If not, we are ready to rescue the baby.. (fingers crossed here) This is a whole story in itself..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX66krRSV0c
Enjoy this cute video of our New Clutch #4
I just added this video of Precious the previous baby feeding her siblings..this only
happens in the wild with Conures..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3dm5MFfc4Y&feature=related
enjoy.. please share, I'm elated, overjoyed. lol

Hello all, I've only just become a member of the site it looks very imforative and intresting so looking forward to reading alot of it!! I have a beautiful blue-throated 8 month old boy named Louie. He is truely a delight to have!
Some of the history, we see Nov 2011 a baby conure for sale went to see him at the owners house and fell in love. The owner had another bird same but female (no where near as gorgeous) which I presume he was keeping? He said he couldn't cope with the birds, the kids, the dogs etc. So we said we'd love to take care of him. Paid £150 for him and his cage which is a nice size, white and quite pretty.
He settled in to our mad house very quickly suprisingly as I have a scottish deerhound, a nanday conure (my hubby's) a cheeky budgie, a 1 year old toddler and a 3 year old monster! We can't understand how the man who sold him to us could of given him up as he is such a sweet bird. We got a dna certificate and more paperwork with him so we are thrilled!!!
He has got issues which I'm hoping to get help from the site with. He nips alot, doesn't hurt but that's not the point. He trys to nip under finger nails too which can hurt! lol Oh and some of his tail fethers look bald towards the end like he's just left with a line rather than a feather. Not sure if the previous owners dog tried to get him and luckily just clipped his tail, or the female did it or he did? Maybe someone has an idea?? But I know he will get new feathers soon but just wondered why that was.
So he says give us a kiss then clicks and he says good boy :o) He gives kisses and loves strokes!!!!! So sweet he also loves baths I struggle every night whilst I'm washing up as he hears the water he's right in there on my shoulder then I'm fighting with him just so I can carry on! lol
I will try to post some pictures, sorry for the waffle!
Oh one more thing!! I nearly lost him tonight I was in the sitting room with Louie on the arm of the chair and my brother in law walks into my house and as he does L:ouie is out the door. I had no socks or shoes on but I just got up and ran outside, it was about 6:45pm so dark and cold!!! And I saw him fly up and down my street and I'm thinking I'll never see him again, he won't survive my poor baby. I ran after him bare in mind it's dark, I have no shoes or socks on and just a t-shirt and madly shouting up into the sky "louie" the neighbours must of thought I was nuts LOL
Anyway he kept flying near a street light and tried to perch on 2 houses, he wasn't coming down then luckily my hubby came out and called him calmly stood on the pavement (not the road like me) and he flew down straight away to him. Arrgghhh I was terrified but soooo proud and glad he came back.
So I'll try to put some pictures up now!
Well it seems to only be letting me put two pics up, one of my gorgeous hubby with Louie the first day at home and one of Louie looking beautiful!

Hi all!
The New Year's email reminded me of the site and that I've been negligent in reading posts for a long time.
I still have just my one Half-moon conure, Connor. He's completely spoiled and I don't think he remembers at all that he's not human.
Photos:

The last picture is bathtime. He refuses to take a bath any way except to stick his beak in the water bottle to make it leak, get his chest wet and then run through this rope toy that I call the "birdie car wash" and he does this until he's so tired he needs a nap.
And omigosh does he talk! He creeps people out a little at how he knows how to say the right thing at the right time. I had a friend make me a bet that I couldn't teach him a sentence and one of my friend's favorite greetings is "What's the deal, Pickles?" So now Connor says that when he meets new people. He also has a vocabulary of about 20 words and phrases. Some are: Whatcha doin?, Gimme kiss, want my covers,
wanna go to sleep, wanna go nite-nite, Ring the bell, I'm gonna get you, Don't bite, Gentle beak, Be sweet, Nikki, Mommy, It's good, Wanna eat?, "Ewww! It's gross!" (and he has to say this one every time he poops!), Mmmmm, What's your problem?, Go to bed, Are you eatin'?, Come here, Quit!, Owww!, It's so funny, Laugh imitation, Cough imitation, Shhhh, Nuh-uh, and What?!
He's an absolute joy to have around and he's like having a little toddler around the house all the time.
I never was successful in getting him to eat anything but blueberries as far as fresh foods are concerned, but he's good about eating pellets, avi-cakes, and nutriberries and this is what his vet recommends so I'll let him have his fun with what he eats.
Though I've not posted in awhile I have read as a guest and wanted to thank you guys for the constant stream of good information that comes through the site.

After a few months (patience has paid off) Caesar's aggression has settled down and he's finally becoming a part of the family. Here's a few pics around bath time, and cuddling. He's got quite the personality, and I'm glad we're able to enjoy it!
Aggressive Conure
Posted by merv (Member) at Jan 11 2012, 01:55 PM. 8 comments
Hi all,
I have been having trouble with one of my conures over the last couple of months, he has become very aggressive and bites me on a daily basis. Tonight while they were both on my shoulder and Charlie was doing his usual give us a kiss routine (he has a serious mouth fetish) t-bone ran up and bit me on the side of the face, I don't mind admitting that I nearly opened the window and chucked him out. He has always had a tendency to be a bit nippy but he has got worse and worse recently and has become very aggressive. I have had him for 10 months now and he is about 18-20 months old.
Nothing has changed in our routine at all so I can't work out why he is behaving like this, I love him dearly but don't like him very much at the moment if that makes sense, and I certainly wont be allowing him on my shoulder anymore.
I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences and if so what did you do. As I say I love him dearly but if he bites me on the face again it might just be the last thing he does!!!!!
Thanks in advance for any replies
Take care all

This a better picture of T-bone, you can really see the vivid red on his wings and shoulders.
Couldn't seem to edit my last post so added another.
Anyone with any idea of what kind of flavour t-bone is?

As you can see from the picture he has vivid red on his shoulders and underneath his wings. It seems to me he is a green cheek but crossed with another type of conure, anyone got any theories?
I don't know who the breeder is so have no way of finding out.
My other conure is a maroon bellied and he looks like all the pictures I have seen of green cheeks, T-bone is definitely different though, smaller and his colours are much more vivid.
Corky's all prettyful :D

So its been about five months since I got my baby boy Corky from Petsmart, all thanks to my best friend who gave me a 500$ gift card for my birthday. Because of school I haven't been on to really explore the site lol but I thought I'd update from like...the one post I ever did haha. The other day I took a new picture of him while he was enjoying looking outside and when I looked at his old photos from the day I first brought him home, I suddenly realized how much he's changed! It's just goes to show the miracles of proper TLC to an animal.

I adore him : D I never thought birds were so amazing and affectionate. I let him roam around the kitchen for a couple hours a day, and he follows me EVERYWHERE, it is the cutest thing ever! The other day I was cleaning his cage, so I had him on his tabletop perch. I guess he didn't see me go outside and suddenly realized I wasn't around, so he flew down from the table and went to the living room looking for me. When I came inside I saw him frantically pacing all around the living room and when I called to him he turned to look at me and ran over as fast as he could, I swear it was like he was saying "Moooommm! Mommm! I couldn't find ya mom! Where did you go?!" lol! He's still quite bitey, but he's improved a lot, I get a 50% chance he stops biting when I simply tell him "No". But he's eating like a pig now and LOVES taking baths haha. Lately though he's been a bit reserved because my dad is visiting and I think he's unsure of him, he stays in his hidey hut and pokes his head out when he hears my dad and just eyes him like he doesn't know what to make of him rofl : P

We got him , what a wee cracker, we got him home this morning about 11am, he is just over 9 wweks and a GCC hand reared from over 2 weeks, the chap who i got him from brought all 3 he had so i could chhose, this little feela, now named Woody, was hanging on the small carry cage the chap had them in, i took to him straight away so that was the one for me, he loves to bo stroked behind his head.
On the way home Woody kept on getting Tracey to stroke him, he rubbed his head against the carryer mesh LOL.
He seems to have settled in already, as soon as we put him in his new home he got into the willow branch perch stripping back the bark.
One other thing that has realy impressed me is that when i was sat on the sofa, he just sat there on the willow while i talked to him and stroked him, i got up and went around the other side of the cage to do something and he watched me go around, i called him and he flew over and watched me.
Then when i went back he followed me back.
He has just preened himself and is now having a kip on the top perch, i have a snug for him but i dont think he has noticed it yet.
