When my new Avian Vet came over today to clip his toe, she somehow managed to break his toe. I was freaking out when I found out and I don't know what to do. His toe is limp and he can't use it to climb, so I am asking if there is anything I can do or will the toe heal by itself. I'm worried about Alvin. I covered his cage to keep him calm, so there is no further damage to his toe.

I would think the Vet would have treated him after she realized she broke his toe!! I'd call the vet ASAP and tell her she needs to treat him (for free) since she is the one who caused his injury. |

If anything, this poor bird needs pain medication! |

Wow , i didn't know avian vets made house calls . They do not here in CT . I would be calling the vet back ASAP and telling them what happened and what she will do to take care of it . |

Alvin is doing much better, but his toe is like dislocated. Can I find a avian vet that could reset his toe so he can use it again or is going to be like that forever till the day he dies? |

How bad is the lack of usage? My tiel I had for years and years at one point must have broken the last little bone in one of his toes because I noticed one day that you could touch it without him reacting and it wouldn't wrap all the way around your finger while holding him. I felt like a bad Mommy for not noticing at first, but then I realized that he didn't seem too bothered by it. He just adapted to not using it and everything was cool. If it's the whole toe, I think I might call around to an avian vet to see if there's anything that can be done. |

My Dusky Conure has a dislocated toe which he must have gotten stuck in a toy some time when we were not around . I brought him to the vet when we had noticed it , and the vet recommended leaving it be as he is not bothered by it at all . The vet said it must have been like that for a couple months , and we suprisingly never noticed it . This was about 20 months ago , and he is fine to this day . The toe is a little crooked , but he can use it and get around just fine pain free . |

Alvin has adapted around the broken toe, but I have to take it slower with him so he doesn't fall off my shoulder or hand. I rearranged his cage so it is much easier for him to get around, but he can still can and move about. He is happier now that is being taken care of. Another thing I notice, disabled or handicapped birds are much more loving than birds who have nothing wrong with them. They come to depend on you and love you for taking care of them. Heck some become much more appreciative of you as a owner. |

I know when Summer had her broken leg, she let the vet (and everyone else) handle her without trying to bite them. Now, of course, she's back to being 'Daddy's girl' and will bite/attack anyone except me. |

Glad to hear Alvin is getting around just fine . Did you ever have a vet check out that toe to make sure there would be no long term problems from the break ? I had my vet check out my Dusky Conures toe , but he felt no need to worry since Conrad's toe was just a little crooked and pain free . Sometimes the toe may be causing discomfort in different breaks , and could need attention to avoid a possible health concern down the road . |
