Accuweather: Shark Attacks Reported Off The NC, SC Coasts On Friday
Quote:

Two shark attacks were reported Friday morning off the coasts of North Carolina and South Carolina.

At about 11:41 a.m., a 47-year-old man was injured swimming one mile north of the Avon Fishing Pier in Avon, North Carolina, according to the National Park Service at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This is the fifth reported shark attack in North Carolina this month.

Paramedics from Hatteras Island Rescue Squad and NPS rangers were called to the scene to attend to the victim, who suffered "various injuries to his right leg and lower back," the NPS said. The victim, who was transported to Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, for further treatment, had been swimming with several others but no other swimmers were injured. The last shark attack at the Seashore was in 2011 at Ocracoke Island, the NPS said.

Roughly 40 minutes earlier, a man was bitten around 11 a.m., while swimming off of Hunting Island, South Carolina, the Charlotte Observer reported. Local officials told swimmers to stay out of the water, according to the Observer.

The attacks on Friday are just the latest in a startling string of incidents in the last two weeks. Earlier this week, an 8-year-old boy was bitten by a shark in knee-deep water in Surf City, North Carolina. On June 14, two separate shark incidents were reported one hour apart near Oak Island, North Carolina.

On June 11, a 13-year girl suffered minor injures after a shark bit her boogie board near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

Last year I think, there was a shark sighting by Cape May, NJ. Freaks me out a bit. When my friend and I were in Cape May, we were in a boat on a whale watch!

....another reported shark attack off the Carolina coast....
Quote:

(ABC News) A 68-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital after he was attacked by a six- to seven-foot shark today off the coast of Okracoke Island in North Carolina, Hyde County and National Park Service officials said.

The victim was bitten on his left side in his lower leg and hip and on both his hands around 12:13 p.m., Hyde County EMS Director Justin Gibbs told ABC News. He added that the victim was conscious when he got into the helicopter, where he gave a description of the attack that allowed officials to confirm he was bitten by a shark.

The man, whose name has not been released, was en route to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, Gibbs said.

"He had been swimming in about 25-30 feet offshore in about waist-deep water with his adult son," the National Park Service said in a statement. "There were no other swimmers injured."

The attack is the seventh shark attack off the North Carolina coast since June, including one in Avon Beach last Friday when a 47-year-old man punched the shark that bit his right leg and lower back.

The alarming number of attacks in North Carolina "is an extremely dangerous situation right now," said George Burgess, who directs the Florida Program for Shark Research at Florida International University.

"There is clearly a continuing threat situation here," he told ABC News.

Burgess, along with some law enforcement officials along the coast, are calling for many of the waterfront communities to consider closing the beaches. Burgess added that considering the trend the past couple of weeks, it's almost a given there will be more victims this Fourth of July weekend.

There are many inherent dangers while swimming in ocean or sound waters. Swimmers are advised to be aware of conditions and their surroundings.

....not even the Marines are safe from the grip of Jaws....
Quote:

(U.S. News & World Report) CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) — A Marine was bitten by a shark off the North Carolina coast last weekend, the eighth such attack in the past three weeks, medical personnel from Camp Lejeune said Monday.

Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital spokesman Raymond Applewhite told WITN-TV in Washington (http://bit.ly/1J1mxjo ) the 32-year-old Marine was bitten offshore at Surf City on July 4. Base spokesman Nat Fahy said Monday that the Marine suffered lacerations to his right hand and forearm.

Fahy said the patient was taken to the Camp Lejeune hospital by a friend late Saturday night. He was released early Sunday.

Prior to the latest attack, North Carolina had already set a record for the most shark bites off the state's coast in the 80 years in which records have been kept.

Most of this year's shark attacks along the North Carolina coast happened in shallow water. Injuries have ranged widely, from an 8-year-old boy who had only minor wounds to his heel and ankle to at least two others who had limbs amputated.

Gov. Pat McCrory has said safety officials are trying to find patterns in the attacks that might keep the coast safe for visitors.
