(Reddit) Books You Find Both Challenging & Exciting

For many years, I've read mostly for school or light entertainment. I found the challenging literature boring and the entertaining stuff easy.

That changed recently with Embassytown by China Meiville. It has an engaging sci-fi universe, gripping plot, vocabulary that was far beyond mine to the point that I was looking words up in the dictionary every few pages, and used alien language as a way to bring up difficult philosophical and linguistic concepts.

Since then, I've started House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It blends multiple levels of narration each with their own style in a fascinating way to tell freaky story. It's also hardly an easy read.

What books have you found difficult, but interesting enough to challenge yourself with? (Reddit user DamiaSageOfStoners)
