I'm a big fan of JRR Tolkien's stories of Middle Earth, but for readability, humour, brilliant characters, ingenious plots and sheer enjoyment it has to be Terry Pratchett's fantastic Discworld series for me. With forty one books in the series, plus a stack of spin off books, it's literally a whole shelf full of reading pleasure. I have the whole series, and I don't think there's a bad one among them. There are several threads that wind in and out of the series, such as the Wizards, the Witches, the Night Watch, Death (the bony fellow with the hourglass and scythe), the Nac Mac Feegle (don't ask), the Vampires, the Trolls, the Dwarfs, etc, and the characters of one thread will often appear as background characters, or even main characters in another thread, tying the whole series together, rather like a TV soap opera, but without all the tedious bickering of a soap opera. Don't be put off by the different species involved, they're just different types of humans, with some very human characteristics. One of the main characters is a six foot tall dwarf, with very strong views on 'doing the right thing', for example. If you're thinking of trying a Discworld book, but don't know where to start, try 'Equal Rites', 'Wyrd Sisters', or 'Guards! Guards!'. They give a fairly gentle introduction to Discworld and many of its great characters. I didn't like some of the threads the first time I read them, but I now like them all. They grow on you... |
