USA Today: Category 4 Hurricane Matthew Roars Through Caribbean

- Quote:
-
Matthew, a dangerous Category 4 hurricane, barreled through the Caribbean on Saturday toward Jamaica and Haiti. It could affect the U.S. East Coast next week, anywhere from Florida to Maine, the Weather Underground reported.
Even if the storm does not make a direct hit on Haiti, rains from Matthew are "expected to bring life-threatening rainfall to portions of Haiti," the National Hurricane Center said.
The hurricane also threatens Cuba and the Bahamas on Monday and Tuesday.
As of 8 p.m. ET Saturday, Matthew had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. The hurricane was stationary and was located 360 miles south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
"Some fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next couple of days, but Matthew is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through Monday," the NHC says.
Matthew is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 15 to 25 inches over southern Haiti, with possible isolated maximum amounts of 40 inches, the hurricane center said.
A hurricane warning has been posted for Jamaica and portions of Haiti. A hurricane watch has been issued for portions of eastern Cuba.
The U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay on Saturday evacuated families and other so-called “non-essential personnel” from the remote outpost in southeast Cuba ahead of Matthew, the Miami Herald reported.
Friday night, when Matthew roared to Category 5 status, it became the strongest Atlantic Ocean Basin hurricane since Felix in 2007, NBC reported.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bernie Rayno said if Matthew moves swiftly as it heads north, it has a greater chance of causing significant impact from rain, wind and flooding along much of the Atlantic coast.
"On the other hand, if Matthew's forward speed slows, it could still have significant impact on the Atlantic coast, but in a much smaller area, when compared to a fast-moving hurricane," he said.
The hurricane center's five-day forecast cone — which marks the range of the storm's possible path — includes a portion of southeastern Florida early Wednesday.
In Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said government services have been placed on high alert, according to the Jamaica Observer newspaper. Thursday, fishermen on Jamaica’s cays and banks were advised to evacuate immediately and return to the mainland.
Other small-craft operators in the island’s coastal waters were told to return to port, while those in port were advised not to venture out, the newspaper reported.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said the state emergency operations centers were active Friday. He said state officials would continue to monitor Matthew's path and urged residents and tourists to monitor the storm and have their emergency plan in place.
"As Hurricane Matthew moves through the Caribbean this weekend, it’s a very dangerous storm and life threatening," Scott said. "We haven’t seen a storm of this magnitude approach our state in a very long time. While the National Hurricane Center’s forecast continues to show the track of the storm east of our state, it’s too soon to rule out impacts to Florida," he said.
A hurricane is classified as "major" when its sustained winds reach 111 mph. A major hurricane is a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. It's the first major hurricane in September in the Caribbean since Felix in 2007.
Hurricane Matthew is the fifth hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season. It's now the only hurricane or typhoon on the planet.

NBC News: Hurricane Matthew Could Deliver Devastating Blow To Caribbean

- Quote:
-
Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful Atlantic tropical storm since 2007, was expected to turn north Sunday night and land a heavy punch on Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, forecasters said.
"This is shaping up to be a devastating blow, especially to places like Haiti and Cuba," said Domenica Davis, a meteorologist for The Weather Channel.
At 8 p.m. ET, Matthew was a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 145 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. It was 265 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, which was already being swamped with torrents of rain, and it was moving northwest at about 5 mph.
The National Hurricane Center called Matthew "extremely dangerous," and conditions look favorable for it to maintain its strength, said Michael Lowry, a hurricane specialist for The Weather Channel.
"It's kind of a resilient hurricane — it hasn't really wavered much in terms of its strength," Lowry said Sunday night. "It's a little bit unusual to go 48 hours with a category 4 or 5 hurricane and not to see some sort of fluctuation."
The center of the storm was expected to approach southwestern Haiti and Jamaica on Monday. With it expected to remain a powerful storm into at least Tuesday, hurricane warnings were in effect for all of Jamaica and Haiti and for the Cuban provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Granma and Las Tunas. -Read more: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/hurricane-matthew-could-deliver-devastating-blow-caribbean-n658311

MSN News: Much Of Florida At Risk From Hurricane Matthew

- Quote:
-
Hurricane warnings were issued along the east coast of Florida late Tuesday as deadly and dangerous Hurricane Matthew left the Caribbean with a battered Haiti and Cuba in its wake.
At 11 p.m., the National Hurricane Center upgraded hurricane watches issued earlier in the day to warnings from Golden Beach to Sebastian Inlet, a change indicating that fierce winds from the Category 4 storm could hit the coast within 36 hours, even if the storm remains off shore. Much of the Florida Keys and Miami-Dade County were placed under tropical storm warnings.
The storm, blamed for nine deaths so far, weakened a bit after making landfall in Cuba, its maximum sustained winds dropping to 130 mph. But forecasters expected it to regain some strength as it churns through the Bahamas and tracks perilously close to a state that hasn’t taken a direct hit from a major storm in more than a decade — and could potentially make landfall somewhere along the coast.
“You need to take this very seriously [Tuesday] and [Wednesday],” National Hurricane Center Direct Rick Knabb said Tuesday morning. “The impacts are going to happen no matter what.”
On Tuesday evening, forecasters said Matthew is expected to begin turning toward the north-northwest over the next 12 hours then turn to the northwest as it crosses the Bahamas, skirting along the South Florida coast — possibly making landfall somewhere along the state’s Atlantic coast. In three days, Matthew should begin to turn back to the north.
At 11 p.m. Tuesday, three hours after making landfall at Juaco on the southeast coast of Cuba, Matthew was located about 20 miles northwest of the island and was moving north at about 8 mph. Sustained winds reached 130 mph, with hurricane force winds spread across 90 miles.
Matthew is expected to move through the Bahamas Thursday and near Florida Thursday night.
As Matthew pushes toward Florida, it is likely to remain a dangerous Category 3 or 4 storm. The last major storm to strike South Florida was Wilma, which landed just south of Marco Island in 2005.
“It will take it a day or so to re-energize, but I think it’s likely to be a four again by Thursday morning when it’s getting near Florida,” Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said.
No evacuation plans have yet been announced for Miami-Dade County, Mayor Carlos Gimenez said in a news briefing. But he urged residents to prepare for the storm now, stocking up on water, batteries and supplies and securing homes and businesses. School Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said Wednesday after-school activities would be suspended. A decision on whether to cancel classes was not made. Broward will close schools Thursday and Friday. -Read more: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/much-of-florida-under-hurricane-warnings-as-matthew-risk-rises/ar-BBwXMdR

MSN News: Bahamas Next In Matthew's Path After Destructive Course Through Haiti
- Quote:
-
PETIT-GOAVE, Haiti — Hurricane Matthew headed into the southern Bahamas with its dangerous winds early Wednesday, leaving behind widespread damage and human suffering in Haiti's poor, rural southwestern peninsula where the hardest-hit area was cut off by flooding.
At least 11 deaths had been blamed on the powerful storm during its weeklong march across the Caribbean, five of them in Haiti. But with a key bridge washed out, roads impassable and phone communications down, the western tip of Haiti was isolated and there was no word on dead and injured.
Hours after Matthew swept onto the remote area with 145 mph winds, government leaders said they weren't close to fully gauging the impact in the vulnerable, flood-prone country where less powerful storms have killed thousands.
"What we know is that many, many houses have been damaged. Some lost rooftops and they'll have to be replaced while others were totally destroyed," Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph said.
After making landfall Tuesday night near Cuba's sparsely populated eastern tip with no immediate reports of major damage, the center of the slightly weakened but still powerful Category 4 storm moved back over open waters.
At 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT), it had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph) and was heading north at 8 mph (13 kph), taking aim at the Bahamas.
Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie voiced concern about the potential impact on the sprawling archipelago off Florida's east coast.
"We're worried because we do not control nature," he said. -Read more: http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/bahamas-next-up-for-matthew-after-destructive-path-in-haiti/ar-BBx0uQL

Accuweather: Hurricane Matthew To Hit Florida Coast, Southeastern U.S. Coast On Friday

- Quote:
-
Hurricane Matthew will affect millions along the southeastern United States coast from Florida to Georgia and the Carolinas with flooding, power outages and damaging winds into this weekend. The curved path along the coast will create a fire hose effect of high winds, heavy rain and storm surge as the eye wall of the hurricane moves northward. "Matthew has re-strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane prior to reaching the east coast of Florida early Friday morning," according to AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. Preparations should be rushed to completion and people should heed evacuation orders as they are issued. The governors of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina declared states of emergency ahead of Matthew earlier this week. Evacuation orders have been given for more than 2 million people from the Florida barrier islands to coastal Georgia and South Carolina. A landfall along the barrier islands east of Melbourne, Florida, is possible late Thursday night. The track of Matthew will roughly parallel the U.S. southern Atlantic coast through Saturday night, but a track along the coast or just inland from near Cape Canaveral to near Jacksonville, Florida, is likely from Friday into into Friday night. Landfall by a hurricane along this stretch of coast is extremely rare. "Since the mid-1800s, when reliable records have been kept, no Category 4 storm or greater has ever made landfall along the upper Atlantic coast of Florida," Kottlowski said. Such a track will put millions in harm's way along the coast from impacts ranging storm surge flooding, flash and urban flooding, flying debris and structural damage to weakly-constructed dwellings. Along the immediate Atlantic coast from central Florida through Georgia, gusts can reach or exceed 100 mph. Winds this strong can cause significant property damage and widespread power outages. The surf will be too dangerous for bathers, boarders and boaters along the southern Atlantic coast. Small craft should remain secured in port and cruise, and freight interests should consider rerouting their trips to avoid the monstrous seas that will develop. Offshore, seas can top 25 feet at the height of the storm. Airline delays and flight cancellations will mount. Some smaller regional airports may close for a time. A general swath of 6-12 inches of rain will occur along the coast from central Florida northward to southern North Carolina. Locally higher amounts are possible. As Atlantic Ocean water is pushed inland, a storm surge (total inundation) of 6-10 feet will occur along low-lying areas of the coast from central Florida to South Carolina. ...continued in next post....

The combination of heavy rainfall and storm surge can cause major flooding in areas from Melbourne, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville, Florida, to Brunswick and Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina. Sustained tropical storm-force winds will extend westward to Interstate 95 from Florida to South Carolina and part of North Carolina. A few gusts to hurricane force can occur in this same zone from Florida to Georgia. Farther west, damaging and disruptive impacts will occur 50 miles or more inland, even though the eye will hug the Atlantic coast. Cities as far west as Orlando, Florida, and Waycross, Georgia, can experience locally damaging winds and sporadic power outages. As a result, travel along much of I-95 in the southern U.S. will be hazardous at the height of the storm. People who must travel north and south in the region are encouraged to take a more western route. From Tallahassee to about Naples, Florida, dry air will be pulled down the Florida Peninsula and will greatly limit impact from Matthew. "A few gusts to tropical storm force can even occur along the west coast of Florida," Kottlowski said. Overall, travel from central South Carolina to central Georgia and in western Florida will be safer. Exactly where a sharp curve to the north occurs in Matthew's track will determine the severity of conditions along the coast and 50-100 miles inland. Any jog to the west by Matthew's eye could bring hurricane conditions farther inland from Florida to North Carolina. "From late this weekend into early next week, Matthew is forecast to curve out to sea, then either stall or loop back toward Florida," Kottlowski said. As a result, people along the southeastern U.S. coast will need to continue to monitor the status of Matthew beyond this weekend. At the very least, such a path would translate to long-duration rough seas, dangerous surf and beach erosion along the southeastern U.S. coast.

(The Guardian) Death toll in excess of 280 in Haiti --Hurricane Matthew has already ripped through Haiti, with the number of people killed rising rapidly into the hundreds on Thursday, Reuters reports.
The total differs between different government agencies and committees, but a Reuters tally of deaths reported by civil protection officials at a local level showed the storm killed at least 339 people.
Earlier on Thursday, a meeting of emergency workers including representatives from the government, the United Nations and international aid agencies said 283 had been killed.
“We have nothing left to survive on, all the crops have gone, all fruit trees are down, I don’t have a clue how this is going to be fixed,” said Marc Soniel Noel, the deputy mayor of Chantal.
Four people were killed over the weekend in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
Many victims were killed by falling trees, flying debris and swollen rivers when Matthew hit on Tuesday with winds of 145 miles per hour.
Most of the fatalities were in towns and fishing villages around the western end of Tiburon peninsula in Haiti’s southwest.
The storm passed directly through the peninsula, driving the sea inland and flattening homes on Monday and Tuesday.
The devastation in the Grand’Anse capital of Jeremie is evident in these pictures.

(The Guardian) With Florida Power & Light Company reporting close to 100,000 customers without power, Brevard County Emergency Management has reminded people that text messages are the most efficient form of communication in the case of an outage.
“Plain text (SMS) messages require the smallest amount of cellphone power and only need limited bandwidth to send. That means plain texts with no photos, no video, no video and no emoticons, sent to one person at a time.”

(BBC News) Devastation in Haiti as death toll rises --Haiti, one of the world's poorest countries, continues to assess the impact of Hurricane Matthew.
Reuters is now reporting a death toll of 339 people.
"I've been on my feet for two days without sleep," Dominique Osny, a resident of Sous-Roche district in the coastal Les Cayes city, told the AFP news agency as he gathered corrugated iron sheets from a blown-off roof.
"Everyone is a victim here, houses have been washed away, we lost all the roofing. I lost everything, right up to my birth certificate."
