Carl Edwards is seeking new challenges and politics might be in the recently retired driver's future.

Speculation surfaced this week from a Columbia (Mo.)College professor who said Edwards will oppose U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) next year.

Edwards, who surprised many in NASCAR with an abrupt retirement from racing, didn't dismiss the idea of a political future when contacted by The Associated Press.

"I believe firmly in the principles that the U.S. was founded upon," Edwards said via text message to The AP. "If I could help, I definitely would consider it."

Edwards added that he currently has no plans for a Senate run, although he kept the door open by quoting Gen. Douglas MacArthur: "No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation."
