One News Now: Trump, et al. bring noticeable change to U.N.

There's clear evidence the Trump administration has caught the attention of the United Nations.

The United Nations Commission on Population and Development recently wrapped up its annual session on April 7 with a frustrated chairman withdrawing her draft resolution. C-FAM's Stefano Gennarini says the commission stalled on coming to an agreement on the resolution because of conflicting views on human sexuality. "Inevitably the commission has become over the years a gathering point for abortion advocates as well as sexual rights advocates more generally," he says. "Different groups promote sexual autonomy, even for small children, in international policy."

The new resolution that was presented called for teaching about intimate matters, including approval for the transgender agenda, to children ages 4 and under. But Gennarini says the climate of the U.S. delegates has changed since President Trump took office and appointed Nikki Haley as U.N. ambassador. For one, he notes, the U.S. has defunded the U.N. Population Fund.

"The timing of the announcement of the defunding of UNFPA was just so perfect," Gennarini tells OneNewsNow. "I mean, it just sent the entire commission into a frenzy, and people were sort of panicked. All of a sudden you've got a gaping seven-percent budget shortfall opening up in your ledger and you're starting to wonder, 'Oh my gosh, how are we going to pay all these people and these programs?'"

The U.S. withdrew funding because of the organization's connection with abortion. Several European countries and Canada have increased their contributions as a response.
