Mother's Day spending is expected to reach a record high this year.

According to the National Retail Federation's annual survey conducted by Proper Insights and Analytics, Mother's Day shoppers are expected to spend an average of $186.39 this year. "When we're looking at total spending, it's going to hit almost $23.6 billion," says NRF spokeswoman Ana Serafin Smith. "We've been doing this survey for 14 years and this is the highest we've ever seen for Mother's Day."

The survey, which asked 7,406 consumers about their Mother's Day plans, was conducted April 4-11.

The number one gift this year is expected to be jewelry, followed by special outings such as a dinner or brunch. Flowers will also remain a popular purchase item.

"Right now, as we're tracking all these separate seasonal spending periods for consumers, we're seeing Mother's Day come in at number three," says Smith. "Number one is Christmas followed by Back to School and, based on the information we just got back on Mother's Day, this is now the third most popular holiday."

When searching for that perfect gift, NRF says 35 percent of consumers will head to department stores and 31 percent will shop at specialty stores such as florists, jewelers or electronics stores, while 24 percent plan to shop at a local small business. Meanwhile, 30 percent will shop online, up from 27 percent last year.

Among smartphone owners, 34 percent will research gift ideas on their phones while 19 percent will use them to make a purchase.
