(The Guardian) Police investigate letter containing white powder sent to Labour peer, Guardian told --Police are investigating at least one letter sent to a politician in Westminster containing white powder, the Guardian understands. The intended recipient is understood to be Labour peer, Peter Hain, but the letter was intercepted. A spokesman for the Met Police said: “Officers and specialist officers attended and the substance was assessed and found not to be noxious. There were no reports of any injuries or illnesses.” Police said they were still investigating the incident, which could be a malicious hoax. Hain confirmed he had been informed about the incident by the Metropolitan police, saying: “There is a severe threat level at parliament and has been for some years, so all of us are on alert.” He said he had been told that the sender of the letter had “purported to represent Isil”. An email sent to the peer said the counterterrorism unit in south Wales, where he is from, had also been informed. |
