One News Now: Hope For Jailed Christians - A Fair Investigation

A watchdog group says a blackmail scandal involving a prosecutor in Pakistan reveals a glimpse of the discrimination and injustice facing Christians in the predominately Muslim country.

Back in 2015, two suicide bombers attacked a couple of churches in Youhanabad, killing and injuring dozens of Christians. Not much was done to catch those responsible, and shortly after the attack two Muslim men were found lynched. As a result, police arrested more than 100 Christians. About 60 have since been released, but 42 remained jailed.

Amy Penn with International Christian Concern says while some of the imprisoned may be guilty, the investigation has been poorly conducted and innocent men are suffering in jail. Now it's been revealed that the prisoners were blackmailed.

"The prosecutor offered to actually acquit them of the charges if they would convert to Islam, which is a blatant violation of religious freedom and justice," she tells OneNewsNow.

"... The most recent update that we have received is that the prosecutor was relocated from the case and they're trying to find a new prosecutor to take the case – as a result, probably, of the international outcry [following] that initial offer."

ICC is hopeful the change in prosecutors will result in a fairer, open-minded hearing and investigation into the charges that were leveled against the Christians – but only time will tell if that comes to pass, says Penn.
