....monitoring reports of a shooting in Alexandria, Virginia involving at least one member of Congress and several aides....
Quote:

(BBC News) A US Republican politician and aides have been shot during baseball practice in Virginia, US reports say. Police in the upmarket Washington DC suburb of Alexandria said they were investigating a "multiple shooting" and a suspect was in custody.

Fox News said House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise and aides have been hit by gunfire.

Police tweeted they were "investigating multiple shooting 400 block E Monroe St. Suspect believed in custody."

An apparent eyewitness said on Twitter that gunfire rang out at the YMCA baseball fields, by the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. The witness, @ben_childers, said it happened at a congressional baseball team practice session.

Local media report there is a major police presence after the attack.

(Daily Telegraph) Rand Paul, Kentucky senator, was on the field at the time
--I was in the batting cage at the time.

The first shot was unusual. Then there was a rapid succession - five or ten.

I'm outside the perimeter. In the field I see Representative Scalise is shot, but moving. He's trying to drag himself away.

There are staffers; they are laying down, but they are having to make a difficult decision as the shots are landing around them.

I am on the outside of the fence, hiding by a tree.

You're not sure where the shots are coming from. It seemed like the third baseline but you don't know.

The people on the field unfortunately didn't have much of a chance.

Nobody could get to them and they couldn't get to us.

At one point, I think the gunman continued to reload.

I think I heard 50 to 60 shots.

The police did a great job and thank God they were there. By Scalise being there, that probably saved all our lives as if there wasn't a leader then there wouldn't have been all the security.

(Daily Telegraph) Rand Paul: Scalise was hit in the hip or leg
--Rand Paul was at the scene.

It looked like Scalise was hit in the hip or the leg. I hope he was OK.

I think the shooter was taken down by the Capitol Hill police.

(Daily Telegraph) Rand Paul explains why the politicians were there
--We start at about 6:15 in the morning and go til 8am.

There's usually people walking their dogs.

We don't know who the shooter was or why he was there. Whether he was mentally ill.

He said Kevin Brady, Republican congressman for Texas, and Jeff Flake, senator for Arizona, were there.

(The Guardian) Congressman Mo Brooks is giving a remarkable eyewitness interview on CNN.

Of the shooter he said: I don’t know if he was killed but I tell you I don’t have any kind thoughts about the shooter so let’s leave it at that. He appeared to be a white male. But bear in mind I saw him for just a second or two, a fraction of a second.

If I had to guess, middle aged … he wasn’t skinny, but he did not appear to be obese either.

Describing the situation, Brooks said: You’re pretty helpless. It’s not a good situation to be in. I don’t know what took our security detail as long as it took them to start exchanging fire … It seemed like a long time but it might have been seconds … They exhibited tremendous bravery.

I got a glimpse of the shooter which meant he also could see me if he looked in my direction. At that point I ran around home plate.

There were probably 10, 20, 30 shots fired while two or three of us were seeking cover.

At least five people were hit with bullets.

(The Guardian) Representative Mike Bishop of Michigan said Scalise was standing on second base when he was shot. “I was looking right at him,” Bishop told Detroit radio station WWJ. “He was a sitting duck.”

Representative Jeff Duncan said in a statement that he was at the practice and “saw the shooter”. “Please pray for my colleagues,” Duncan said.

(The Guardian) Republican senator Rand Paul of Kentucky told MSNBC that he heard as many as 50 shots.

Shots landed near aides taking cover on the ground, he said, and one staffer scrambled over a fence to escape.

NBC News and Reuters are both reporting that Congressman Steve Scalise as well as two capitol hill police officers struck by gunfire are in stable condition.
