One News Now: Washington Suggests A Focus Shift To Education

With the 2017 NCAA women's basketball champions turning down an invitation to visit the White House, one black conservative sees an opportunity to shift focus from athletics to education.

South Carolina Gamecocks' head coach, Dawn Staley, claims the team declined the invitation because they are focused on preparation for the next season and cannot take the time. But whether or not politics affected the decision, Stacy Washington of Project 21, The National Leadership Network of Black Conservatives, would like to see President Trump recognize others instead of star athletes. "I think he should focus on bringing in kids who have won spelling bees," she suggests. Or winners of "national competitions for math, and science, and art."

Since politics has entered the realm of both professional and amateur athletics, Washington, host of Urban Family Talk's "Stacy on the Right" program, would like to see a shift toward education. "We certainly give honor to education in America, but we elevate the sports stars and the entertainment stars far above those individuals who are really on a trajectory to make a contribution to our nation in science and art and in the work world," she submits.

In September, after winning the NBA championship, the Golden State Warriors declined their invitation to the White House after President Trump disinvited team member Stephen Curry, who stated the team did not want to meet the president.
