One News Now: Becket - CA Doesn't Need Nuns To Pass Out Contraceptives

The state of California is involving Catholic nuns in a legal fight with the Trump administration.

After getting an exemption from Obamacare mandates in October, Catholic charity Little Sisters of the Poor is headed back to court after California's attorney general filed a lawsuit to reverse that action. A similar lawsuit has been filed in Pennsylvania, too.

Little Sisters made national headlines when it joined other religious organizations to sue the Obama administration for requiring employers to provide birth control. The former administration offered a supposed compromise but the plaintiffs refused to cooperate since they would still be required to provide coverage.

Mark Rienzi, senior counsel at Becket law firm, represents Little Sisters of the Poor. "We have a lot of problems in this country that can be hard to solve," Rienzi tells OneNewsNow, "but figuring out how to distribute contraceptives without nuns is not one of them."

California's attorney general, ironically, has claimed the Trump administration is trampling on the rights of Americans by exempting Little Sisters and others. "What group of Americans will they target next?" Xavier Becerra asked in October, suggesting that employees could be denied cancer treatments under the Trump administration's exemption.

Arguments in the California case are set for December 12. A hearing in Pennsylvania is scheduled for December 14. "These states have never before tried to force the Little Sisters to cover contraceptives," Reienzi argues, "but are suddenly saying that the federal government must do it for them."
