One News Now: Bizarre Anti-Christmas Efforts Continue, But Less Common

Liberty Counsel has launched its 15th annual "Friend of Foe Christmas Campaign" to fight against secular attempts to censor the true meaning of Christmas.

Liberty Counsel founder and chairman Mat Staver says they started the campaign in 2003 when they perceived a tidal wave threatening the Christmas sentiment with unconstitutional censorship, especially within America's public schools. He says they've made real progress since then, but they have to remain vigilant because "bizarre situations" still occur.

"... We've even had it where these students have been required to change the words of a standard Christmas song and remove the word 'God' and replace it with something completely secular," he describes.

Liberty Counsel describes other situations – dealing with such things as distribution of candy canes, inclusion of a Nativity scene in a public display, door decorations in a seniors' center, and students wearing red and green to class. "But the good news is most of these situations, by and large – if we get them early enough – have been and are able to be resolved," the attorney adds.

Staver's firm offers a wealth of information Christians can obtain for free by going to their website. "You can contact us - you can phone us, send us an email – or you can download our material and give it to the people," he describes. "I would encourage people to be proactive and give it to your elected officials, give it to your schools, give it to your teachers and your school board."

Other suggestions include writing letters to editors of local newspapers, spreading the word to others that it's indeed legal to celebrate Christmas, and – of course – praying that God will soften the hearts of those trying to censor Christmas.
